GlenAllachie review of Denmark-only editions - by Whisky blogger Jan Autzen Laursen

Meet our new Whisky Blogger Jan Autzen Laursen. In this post he elaborates on his opinion of 4 different bottles of GlenAllachie whisky, bottled exclusively for the Danish market.

GlenAllachie

Post by Jan Autzen Laursen

Normally, I'm one of those whisky lovers who should be able to smell a campfire every time a bottle of whisky is opened, yet my interest in whisky has developed over the years and whisky aged in sherry casks in particular is starting to catch my nose's interest.
So when I was offered the opportunity to write about 4 delicious Single Casks bottled exclusively for the Danish market, "well, you couldn't say no".

At the foot of Ben Rinnes lies a small but not insignificant distillery. The good connoisseur will quickly spot that Ben Rinnes has nothing to do with Islay, no - we are drawn to Speyside more specifically GlenAllachie and their Danish batch 4 casks, which are bottled for the Danish whisky drinking people.

When you pour a GlenAllachie, there is no doubt that these are bottlings with an incredible amount of nuances. You will quickly get a whiff of an incredibly delicious and fine cask aging, where you quickly sense that the percentages do not hold back.

GlenAllachie was established in October 2017 to take over the distillery from Pernod-Ricard. The company is led by Master Distiller Billy Walker, who has more than 50 years of experience in the whisky industry. He is joined by partners Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson

The first one to enjoy is!
GlenAllachie 2008 13yo Cask no 2583.
A single cask bottling that has been aged in Ruby Port casks and bottled at 55.2% Cask Strength.
Normally I'm not a big fan of Ruby Port casks, but let's see what they've come up with here.

Nose: A delicious and fruity aroma of banana, burnt almonds and fine chocolate "not the cheap stuff from Aldi"
Taste: Dried fruit, the chocolate flavor is intense and not caramel, deliciously balanced and not at all dry.
Aftertaste: Good and long aftertaste, senses the Port cask which begins to dull this chocolate flavor, of the 55.2% which is not at all noticeable.
Rating: It starts off well with a nice and delicious sweetness and a very pleasant aftertaste. Normally, I find that whisky in port casks tends to have a dull and musty taste when you've waited long enough. This is a real value for money and definitely a bottling worth checking out.
GlenAllachie 2009 13yr Cask no. 804973.
Now we move on to a single cask that has been aged in the classic Sherry Olorosso casks and has been bottled at 57.9% Cask Strength.

Nose: Sweet dried fruits, nuts and a floral undertone I can't quite put into words, but it's not bad.

Taste: "What a spoonful" here you get a kick in the ass from the Olorosso cask at 57.9%. This is one of those whiskies with some GO´DAW in it. Dry Olorosso taste as you know it with flavors of almonds and leather.
Aftertaste: The taste is incredibly long and dry and the longer it stays on the tongue, the more nuances open up. You're left with the feeling that "I don't really need any more whisky today because it covers the need for nuances." Incredibly delicious and very soft in taste that you can just enjoy "yum."
Rating: If you need to send your mother-in-law home early from her coffee date, then serve this Cask no 804973. It will definitely intimidate a beginner, but those of us with a wider palate will absolutely love it. If you like Sherry aged at Cask Strength, you should have this bottle on your shelf.
GlenAllachie 2009 12 years Cask no 1040 59.1%.
Then it's time to taste a whisky in wine casks, more like Premier Cru Classé casks. As with Port Cask, I'm not a big fan of whisky that has been finished at vinfade, but you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, so why not see if they have made something delicious here.

Nose: Now we move into a classic scent of what Speyside usually offers.

Floral notes, honey, vanilla, all the classic scents you'd find in a whisky from that region.
Taste: Full-bodied flavors of sweet mashed fruits and orange. It's dry but still full-bodied.
Aftertaste: I don't think the 59.1% comes into its own. In a blind tasting, I had shot it to about 40-45%, it lingers for a long time, but nothing to write home about.
Rating: Definitely the least memorable bottling of the 4. I would much rather take one of the other bottlings under my arm than this one. You really have to be a connoisseur of Speyside whisky to find anything positive to write here.
GlenAllachie 2009 13yr Cask no 804956 56.1%.
For the final tasting, we find a bottling that has been aged in PX Sherry casks and bottled at 56.1%.

Nose: Here we come to the dried and mashed fruit that is most prominent. Especially a scent of banana comes out all the time.
Taste: "Wauv" nothing less than "wauv", a very rich, not dry taste of exotic fruits just washes over the palate. A hint of caramel offers itself, but it is not allowed to overpower the exotic fruit flavors.

Aftertaste: A delicious taste of the southern sun and fruits that, with a fine 56.1%, plays along all the way. But just as the sun tends to set, this one dies pretty quickly, but that's not a minus.
Rating: Watch out for this bottling. It is delicious and gives you some incredibly fine nuances. However, you have to tread carefully because if the flavor disappears quickly, I can guarantee that you can wake up with a headache that will take days to go away.

GlenAllachie Single Cask Batch 4 is definitely an approved acquaintance. In these times where the normal standard bottlings are gaining more and more ground, it's great that you can still get close to whisky with so much delicious flavor.

"Single Cask is highly recommended from here."
