In the dense forests of Gascony grows the dark oak that has shaped armagnac's character for centuries. From here, from the farms Francis Darroze walked one by one from the late 1960s onward, comes the blend that today carries the name Grands Assemblages.

    Expert's Description

Darroze 12 Year Old Grands Assemblages is a French Bas-Armagnac blended from multiple vintages and bottled at 43%.

While Darroze is best known for single-estate armagnacs from named farms and vintages, Grands Assemblages is the house's blended range — a collection of eaux-de-vie aged from 8 to 60 years, assembled to create a more accessible yet still hand-picked armagnac. This 12-year-old edition has spent at least 12 years in oak.

The tradition behind the bottle traces back to the family restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, where generations of the Darroze family served Gascon food alongside their own eaux-de-vie. From the late 1960s, Francis Darroze began seeking out small, independent farms across Bas-Armagnac to select the finest casks — a practice his son Marc Darroze has carried forward.

The casks are made from French oak sourced from Gascony's own forests. After around ten years of ageing, armagnac begins to shift character: the fresh fruit gains company from softer spices such as liquorice and cinnamon, growing more complex the longer it breathes in the glass.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe fruit meets liquorice and a light spiced note from the oak.

    Palate

Full-bodied and warm, with cinnamon and a touch of dried plum, tied together by a light nutty undertone.

    Finish

Long and spiced, where the liquorice and the oak's tannins keep the flavour going long after the sip.

    Did You Know?

Grands Assemblages is the exception in Darroze's portfolio: while the house is otherwise known for single-estate armagnacs from named farms and vintages, this is the only range where multiple farms and vintages are blended together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Darroze 12 Year Old Grands Assemblages

What is Grands Assemblages at Darroze?

It's the house's blended range, combining eaux-de-vie aged from 8 to 60 years across several farms. That sets it apart from Darroze's other bottlings, which typically come from a single named farm and vintage.

What does the 12-year age statement mean?

It reflects the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend — the armagnac has spent at least 12 years in French oak before bottling.

    What does a 12-year-old Bas-Armagnac taste like?

After around ten years in oak, armagnac starts shifting from pure fruit toward a more spiced profile of liquorice and cinnamon. At 12 years, that shift is clear, but the fruit is still present.

How should Darroze Grands Assemblages be served?

As a digestif in a tulip glass at room temperature. Give it a few minutes in the glass so the spiced notes can fully open up.

Who is the family behind Darroze?

Darroze was founded by Francis Darroze, who from the late 1960s travelled to small farms across Bas-Armagnac to select the finest casks. Today the house is run by his son, Marc Darroze.

Is Darroze Bas-Armagnac a good gift?

Yes, particularly for anyone already familiar with cognac or whisky who wants to explore armagnac's more rustic, spiced style.
