The new millennium had just begun when these grapes were harvested in the Douro Valley and laid down in cask at Dalva's cellars. Since then the wine has been given exactly the time it needed to slowly turn amber and spiced.
Expert's Description
Dalva 2001 Colheita Tawny is a Portuguese Colheita Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.
The word Colheita means harvest in Portuguese, and the name is the whole point: the wine comes from a single vintage, unlike most age-indicated Tawny Ports (10, 20, 30 years), which are blended from several vintages to hit an average age. A Colheita must spend at least seven years in cask before it can be bottled.
Behind the bottle stands Dalva, the brand of the Port house C. da Silva in Vila Nova de Gaia, founded in 1862 under the name Corrêa Ribeiro e Filhos. The house took on its current identity in 1933, when Clemente da Silva took over the firm, and has since built a strong reputation around this exact style.
Tasting Notes
Nose
The nose is deep and amber in character, with spice, toasted caramel and a trace of waxy balsamic notes with a slight touch of menthol.
Palate
The palate is creamy and rich, with good freshness and a fine balance between sweetness and acidity despite the many years in cask.
Finish
The finish is long and warm, closing on caramel and dried spice.

Investment Potential
As a single-vintage Colheita, the 2001 bottle represents a harvest that will never be repeated, making it a natural collectible among aged Port. Interest is strongest for the oldest vintages, but a well-established year like 2001 also attracts Port collectors looking for a specific birth-year bottle.
Did You Know?
Colheita is the Portuguese word for harvest, and that is exactly what sets the style apart from standard age-indicated Tawny: while a 20-year-old Tawny is a blend of many vintages, every drop in this bottle comes from the same 2001 harvest.
