A Speyside distillery hides behind a single word: Enigma. No name on the label, no clue to which glen or burn shaped the spirit inside. Just a promise that after seventeen years in the dark, what is in the bottle can speak for itself.

    The Expert's Description

Cadenhead's Enigma SPY.3.B is a 17 year old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, fully matured in Oloroso Sherry hogsheads and bottled at 46%. The Enigma series is where Cadenhead's tucks the distillery's name away and lets the flavour carry the whole story on its own. This bottling is the second time the firm has drawn from this same secret parcel — the first release, SPY.3.A, arrived in October 2025 at a cask strength of 64.5%, while this one has been brought down to a gentler 46%.

The whisky was distilled in 2008 and has rested in sherry wood ever since, until it was bottled in August 2026 in a run of 762 bottles. No chill filtration, no added colouring — just as the rest of Cadenhead's range has insisted on since 1842, showing the whisky exactly as it is.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Hay and ripe strawberries lead the way, with sultanas and a hint of blueberry close behind.

    Palate

Orange marmalade and dark chocolate meet brazil nuts and a streak of acacia honey.

    Finish

Salty, with chocolate honeycomb sweetness and a last whisper of cinnamon.

    Did You Know?

SPY.3.B is not the first pour from this secret parcel. Back in October 2025, Cadenhead's released its sibling cask, SPY.3.A, at a fiery 64.5% cask strength — this 46% edition is the same mystery, just dialled down to a gentler sip.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cadenhead's Enigma SPY.3.B

Why doesn't the label say which distillery this is from?

Because that's the whole point of Cadenhead's Enigma series. The bottler deliberately keeps the distillery's name secret and lets only the code SPY.3.B and the flavour do the talking — usually whiskies Cadenhead's thinks are too good to overlook, but can't sell under their own name for contractual reasons.

What makes this particular bottle rare?

Only 762 bottles were filled. It's also the second time Cadenhead's has drawn from this exact secret parcel — the first round, SPY.3.A, came at cask strength back in 2025.

Can you guess which distillery is behind it?

Whisky enthusiasts love debating exactly that. The region, the age and the flavour profile offer a few clues, but Cadenhead's never officially reveals the identity — it's part of the charm of the Enigma series.

How should Cadenhead's Enigma SPY.3.B be served?

Best at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass, so the aromas can open up. A few drops of water can bring out more of the sherry cask's sweetness, if you fancy it.

What do the Oloroso casks bring to the flavour?

The Oloroso sherry lends the dark fruit sweetness and the nutty, slightly salty notes that run through both the palate and the finish — a classic combination for characterful Speyside whisky.

Is Cadenhead's Enigma SPY.3.B a good gift for a whisky collector?

Yes — both the story of the hidden distillery and the limited bottle count make it a conversation piece that stands out in any collection.
