Spirits have been made on the Danish island of Bornholm since 1855, with one long break when the island spent almost 70 years without a distillery of its own. Today the craft lives on in Nexø, where Bornholmer Bitter is made in the old tradition.
Expert Description
Bornholmer Dansk Bitter is a Danish Bitter from Den Bornholmske Spritfabrik, bottled at 38%.
The bitter builds on the island’s long tradition of schnapps and bitters. The old steam distillery in Hasle was built in 1855 but closed shortly after the First World War, and for decades the Bornholmer name was kept alive elsewhere. It was not until 1994 that Bornholm got its own distillery back, when Den Bornholmske Spritfabrik was re-established in Nexø. Bornholmer Bitter is now one of the distillery’s core products alongside its aquavits, crafted as a rounded, easy-drinking bitter meant for a broad audience rather than a sharp, niche style, a lunch-table classic.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Rowan berries and a faint hint of cinnamon sit over a soft, herbal aroma.
Palate
Rounded and characterful with a mild bitterness, where rowan berries and spice balance against a light sweetness.
Finish
Short and mild, closing with a last touch of sweetness that rounds the taste off nicely.
