Boann Distillery - Blog post from Whiskymagasinet

Boann is a family-owned distillery that, over a period of 40 years, built Ireland's largest distribution company. Read the story behind Boann Distillery, the Cooney family and 2 delicious bottles from The Whistler.

Boann is a family-owned distillery located north of Dublin in Drogheda in the heart of the Boyne Valley. It was founded by Pat Cooney and his wife Maria, but the couple's four children are all involved in the business. Pat Cooney has made his money in the beer and water industry. Over a period of 40 years, he built up Ireland's largest distribution company (Gleeson Group) and through the sale of the business in 2012, he freed up a lot of funds, which he has now invested in whiskey production. The distillery is brand new and one of the finest distilleries in Ireland. In addition to the distillery, the Cooney family has also built a beautiful microbrewery where some fantastic specialty beers are produced. The distillery also houses a visitor center and a small restaurant.

Themyth of the goddess Boann
The distillery is named after the goddess Brann, who was married to Nechtan (the king of the Bronze Age people). The goddess is said to have been responsible for causing a magical well in the area to well up so violently that it created the River Boyne. She herself is said to have died in the process, having lost an arm, a leg and then an eye. Boann has become a symbol of knowledge creativity and her name lives on in the River Boyne, which still holds historical, mythical and spiritual significance in Irish culture today.
Boann's Whistler
As the Cooney family does not yet have whiskey from their own distillery to sell, they purchased a very large batch from the Cooney distillery before selling it to Beam/Suntory. much of this whiskey was freshly distilled, and the family then aged the whiskey in different types of barrels before bottling a series of good quality products. "The Whistler" refers to Pat Cooney's love of whistling, which he practices often. Overall, the family is very musical, and there are many references to music on the bottles' equipment.
The Whistler - Irish Blended Whiskey - 43% (Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish)
This whiskey is one of the best blends produced in Ireland. It is triple distilled and aged in top quality casks, first in American Bourbon Barrels and then in Oloroso Sherry casks. It is one of those blends that deserves to be drunk as it is, with just a drop of water. The nose has notes of citrus, walnuts and nougat as well as tropical fruits. The taste is incredibly smooth and well-balanced with notes of orange, nuts, nougat and a hint of coconut, banana and pear. Really "value for money". A really delicious glass of whiskey! As is the case with all Whiseys from Brann, it is bottled without cold filtration and completely without caramel coloring.
The Whistler - 7 Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey - 59% Cask Strength (Sherry Cask Finish)
This excellent and powerful single malt spent the first five years in Bourbon Barrels and then spent another two years in 1st fill Sherry Hogsheads. The whiskey is then bottled at full cask strength. It's a powerful case with a well-developed aroma that pops out of the glass as soon as the nose approaches the glass. The taste is creamy with aromas of salted caramel, apples and orange peel. The whisky deserves a drop or two of water and then opens up further. It has a robust flavor with citrus fruits and a slight note of white pepper and the salty caramel flavor comes through well. The finish is warming and persistent with a slight spicy note. As with all Boann whiskeys, it is bottled without cold filtration and without any caramel coloring.
