In Cromdale, where the Spey cuts through Speyside's green glens, stands a distillery most drinkers have never heard the name of, even though plenty of them have tasted it without knowing. Balmenach has spent two centuries handing its heavy, meaty spirit over to other people's blends – but every so often a bottle escapes on its own.
Expert's Description
Balmenach-Glenlivet 15 Year is a Speyside Single Malt Whisky matured in a Palo Cortado Hogshead and bottled at 46%. The release sits in Cadenhead's Original Collection, the independent bottler's more accessible range, where well-known and obscure distilleries alike are allowed to show their character without embellishment. The whisky was distilled in 2011 and has spent time in fresh Palo Cortado hogsheads since 2020, where the Spanish sherry style has folded sweetness and spice into an already heavy, oily spirit. Balmenach is one of the last distilleries in Scotland still running triple distillation, and the spirit condenses through old-fashioned worm tubs rather than modern shell-and-tube condensers – a combination that produces a slow-maturing, robust character unusually well suited to sherry wood. The malt is unpeated. The whisky is non-chill filtered and carries no added colouring, so what reaches the glass is whatever the spirit and the cask actually made.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Grassy and faintly crisp, like a freshly opened bag of pretzels, quickly joined by caramel, dulce de leche and a touch of tiramisu.
Palate
Cappuccino and chocolate truffle meet ripe banana in a full, creamy sip that sits heavy on the tongue.
Finish
Cocoa powder and walnut fade into blood orange and a hint of black pepper that lingers.

Did You Know?
Balmenach has six copper stills, all connected to worm tubs rather than the shell-and-tube condensers seen almost everywhere else – each worm stretches 94 metres and sits submerged in cold water, a technique that has all but vanished from the rest of Scotland.
