Arran Signature Series Edition 1: Remnant Renegade - Blogpost by Luka Gottschalk

Arran Signature Series Edition 1: Remnant Renegade

Arran has launched a new series named "Signature Series". Our whisky blogger Luka Gottschalk has been fortunate enough to taste the first edition named "Remnant Renegade", which translates to something like "the last rebel" or "the abandoned rebel", depending on the choice of words.

Blogpost by Luka Gottschalk

The name of the whisky is a hint at what it consists of; namely remnants of various casks of Arran whisky from the years 1997 to 2017. It is a blend of many different types of casks, including sherry casks of various sizes/types and bourbon casks. Therefore, the whisky does not have a specific age statement, and the final product is bottled at 46% alcohol.

The idea behind the new signature series from Arran is that the bottles should be opened and enjoyed among good company rather than collecting dust on collectors' shelves. Whether that actually happens remains to be seen...

As is customary from the Lochranza distillery, most Arran whiskies are non-chill-filtered and without added color. This bottling is no exception.

The color has a natural amber-golden hue and looks quite inviting. The aroma, in my opinion, is classic Arran, with notes of cinnamon, freshly ground black pepper, vanilla bean, tangy green apples, and orange zest.

The taste is absolutely silky smooth! I can distinctly sense some of the older cask remnants in the whisky. The nuances are fruity and spicy as the aroma suggested and build further with notes of cardamom and chocolate.

The finish is long and offers notes of coffee and roasted almonds after a bit of contemplation. Besides these notes, the fruity and spicy elements are still very much present.

Arran’s core range has a permanent place in my collection because I really enjoy both the house style and the presentation of the bottles. Of course, the content is always the top priority, but I also enjoy whisky with my eyes. This bottling of Arran reminds me of a fusion of their Quarter Cask bottling and their Sherry Cask bottling, which many whisky enthusiasts are likely familiar with. I truly appreciate the quality of this bottling, but it’s also worth noting that the price is significantly higher than the two aforementioned bottlings, which are bottled at high cask strength. However, it must be said that this bottling appears significantly more balanced according to my taste.

I would recommend this whisky to any fan of Arran who has a bit of extra cash to enjoy!
