There's a particular shade of yellow light old spirits bottles catch on a shelf — the same light that falls through a kitchen window on Christmas Eve in an old Danish farmhouse. This bottle of Aalborg Anniversary Akvavit has that light. The label has gone gold with age, the logo is the old one, and the number on the front is higher than anything you'll find in a supermarket today.
The Expert's Description
Aalborg Anniversary Akvavit is a Danish Akvavit distilled from dill and coriander seed and bottled at 45%. The bottling in front of you is an older release — today's Aalborg Anniversary Akvavit is sold at 40%, so those extra five percent point to an earlier chapter in the brand's history.
The label carries the name "Aktieselskabet De Danske Spritfabrikker, Aalborg · København" and a royal warrant mark — both belonging to an earlier phase of the company, before Aalborg Akvavit became part of the Arcus group. The Anniversary name dates back to 1946, when the akvavit was launched to mark the 100th anniversary of Aalborg Taffel Akvavit. Unlike most other akvavits, Anniversary contains no caraway at all — instead it leans on dill and coriander, rounded off with an extract of American white oak.
Behind the brand stands Isidor Henius, a Polish immigrant who arrived in Denmark at 17 in 1838, already trained in the German distilling trade. He opened his own distillery in Aalborg at 25, and in 1881 brought together hundreds of small local distilleries under the name De Danske Spritfabrikker — the foundation of what is Aalborg Akvavit today.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Fresh dill and crushed coriander seed arrive first, with a light hint of citrus peel behind them.
Palate
Dill and coriander carry the palate, while a round sweetness from the American white oak extract softens the edges — a touch of star anise appears along the way, with caraway never showing up at all.
Finish
Soft and clean, with a faint caramel note that fades without bitterness.

Investment Potential
Medium. Older bottlings of Aalborg Anniversary Akvavit carrying the old distillery name and the royal warrant mark trade among collectors of vintage Danish spirits at prices well above what today's 40% version costs on the shelf — particularly when the label and seal are intact.
Should It Be Drunk?
At 45%, akvavit keeps for years, so the bottle is technically still drinkable. But colour and flavour may have shifted slightly with age, and an older cap or cork should always be checked for a tight seal before deciding. Most collectors choose to keep a bottle like this as a display piece rather than everyday akvavit.
Did You Know?
When Isidor Henius took over the spirits trade in Aalborg in the 1800s, a bottle of akvavit cost just 30 øre — a long way from the collector status the same brand carries today.
