The GlenAllachie 1990, 35‑Year‑Old Cask Strength
A rare, deeply complex and uncompromisingly crafted Speyside malt
The GlenAllachie 35‑Year‑Old Cask Strength is one of the most ambitious and luxurious releases in the distillery’s history. Master Distiller Billy Walker has selected four exceptional cask types from the distillery’s impressive inventory to create a whisky that both honours tradition and explores new depths. As the document states, it is “crafted with meticulous precision” and based on Mizunara virgin oak, American virgin oak, Oloroso Sherry and Pedro Ximénez Sherry.
It is especially the use of Mizunara virgin oak – an extremely rare and challenging wood sourced from 200‑year‑old Japanese oak trees – that makes this release truly unique. The document highlights that Mizunara is “a prized Japanese wood sourced from 200-year-old trees” and that the whisky creates “a symphony of flavours, balancing warm spice, luscious dried fruit, creamy vanilla, and rich molasses.”
The aroma is intense and layered, opening with mocha, crystallised cinnamon and treacle tart, followed by cocoa, toasted hazelnuts and pineapple, rounded off with soft notes of ginger and heather honey.
The palate is deep, rich and silky. As described in the document: “cocoa, baking spices and chocolate-coated raisins, followed by coconut, brandied orchard fruits and sandalwood, with vanilla, dried red fruits and honeycomb.”
This is a whisky where the dark fruit of sherry, the spice of virgin oak and the exotic elegance of Mizunara merge into a remarkable whole.
A naturally rich mahogany colour – the result of three decades in powerful casks.
50.2% – natural cask strength, with no added colour and non‑chill filtered.
The GlenAllachie has created entirely bespoke packaging for this release. The document explains that the design is “entirely bespoke” and crafted to reflect the whisky’s luxury and complexity.
The handcrafted wooden outer box is inspired by Mizunara oak and the Japanese Kumiko woodworking tradition, where precision and patience are essential. Four geometric patterns represent the four cask types, while the distillery’s gable end ties the design back to Speyside.
The inner box pays tribute to the name GlenAllachie – “Valley of the Rocks” – evoking slate, stone and the rugged Scottish landscape, with Billy Walker’s signature as a mark of quality.
A broad‑shouldered, label‑free decanter places the deep mahogany spirit at the centre, sealed with Billy Walker’s signature as a mark of authenticity.
