Stauning Traditional Oloroso Cask 2010/2013 – Danish Single Malt Whisky

Stauning Traditional Oloroso Cask 2010 is a truly special whisky in a Danish context. It was distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2013, making it a young whisky of just 3 years. Nevertheless, it surprises with a complexity and richness normally associated with much older releases. With an alcohol strength of 52.8% and a limited edition of only 554 numbered bottles, this is an exclusive and collectible release.

The whisky is produced by Stauning Distillery, pioneers of Danish whisky. This edition marks the first Stauning Single Malt matured in Oloroso sherry casks, and it was officially released on November 27, 2013. Stauning is known for working with small batch sizes, craftsmanship, and an uncompromising approach to quality, which is clearly reflected in this bottling.

The whisky has undergone an Oloroso Cask Finish, meaning its final maturation took place in sherry casks. This has a pronounced influence on both aroma and flavor, with sherry notes standing out clearly. Despite its young age, the whisky appears rich, full-bodied, and with a maturity that feels far older than three years in cask.

The nose opens with sweetness and spice. Vanilla and pepper are immediately noticeable, bringing freshness and warmth. Notes of chocolate and dried fruit follow, adding depth and richness to the bouquet. The sherry influence is evident, lending a vinous character that balances the youthful freshness.

On the palate, the whisky is sweet, spicy, and full-bodied. It has a rich texture that suits the complex layers of flavor. Vanilla and pepper reappear, while chocolate and dried fruit provide an intense and harmonious taste experience. The combination of sweetness and spice makes the whisky lively and engaging, with the sherry cask adding elegant depth.

The finish is long and persistent, balancing sweetness and spice. The youthful freshness is complemented by sherry notes, creating a rounded and pleasant conclusion.

Stauning Traditional Oloroso Cask 2010/2013 is a milestone in Danish whisky history. As the first Stauning release with an Oloroso Cask Finish, it demonstrates how even a young whisky can deliver great complexity and character. With only 554 bottles released, it is both a rare collector’s item and a rewarding experience for the passionate whisky enthusiast eager to explore Danish craftsmanship at the highest level.
