A distiller meets a brewer. Smoked rye whisky finished in porter casks – dark, malty and surprisingly complex.

    Expert description

Stauning Smoked Rye Porter Beer Cask is a Danish Rye Whisky finished in porter casks and bottled at 51.4% without chill filtration. The base is Stauning's smoked rye whisky – made from peated, floor-malted rye – which has then rested in porter casks, absorbing the dark, malty tones from the beer. The result is a complex expression bridging two Danish craft traditions.

The porter casks add chocolate, coffee and maltiness to the rye's naturally spiced and smoky base.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Smoke and malted rye meet dark chocolate and coffee from the porter cask. Warm spices and a hint of liquorice in the background.

    Palate

Full and complex. Smoked rye, malted barley, espresso and dark berries. The 51.4% gives excellent structure.

    Finish

Long with chocolate, mild smoke and a gentle coffee bitterness.

Frequently asked questions about Stauning Smoked Rye Porter Beer Cask

What is a beer cask finish?

A beer cask finish means the whisky is finished in casks that previously held beer. Here, porter casks add dark, malty chocolate and coffee notes to the smoked rye whisky base.

What does Stauning Smoked Rye Porter Beer Cask taste like?

A dark, complex expression with smoked rye at the core and the porter casks adding chocolate, coffee and maltiness. The 51.4% ABV provides good body.

    What is Stauning's rye whisky?

Stauning uses 100% rye – floor-malted at the distillery itself – for their rye expressions. Rye gives a spicy, dry character with pepper and herbs that is markedly different from barley-based whiskies.

    Is it heavily smoked?

The smoke is present but not aggressive – Stauning's smoked style is fresher and milder than the heavily peated Islay style. The porter casks soften the smoke and add a malty chocolate dimension.

What does it pair well with?

The dark, malty character pairs well with aged cheese, dark chocolate or as an after-dinner dram. The coffee notes also make it interesting in whisky cocktails inspired by porter beer.
