Picture a street in Mexico, where horchata is sold ice-cold from big glass jars - rice, cinnamon and sugar stirred together into something creamy and cool. Carry that feeling all the way to Wisconsin, where dairy cattle stand shoulder to shoulder and cream is the state's pride. Mix the two with rum from the Caribbean, and you're roughly where RumChata was born.

    Expert description

RumChata Liqueur is an American Cream liqueur based on rum, made with Caribbean rum and fresh Wisconsin cream, bottled at 15%.

The idea came from Tom Maas, who had spent many years in the spirits industry, including at Jim Beam. He came across horchata, the creamy, cinnamon-driven drink found across much of Latin America, and built a liqueur around it. The result began rolling out of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, in 2009. The rum base is distilled five times and chosen to be light and smooth rather than heavy and molasses-like. It's homogenised together with real dairy cream so it won't separate, and spiced with vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and the house's own blend. The label states 38% rum and 22% cream in the finished liqueur. The bottling is imported into Europe by Mack & Schühle AG in Germany.

    Taste

The nose offers warm cinnamon, almost bakery-like, with vanilla, condensed milk and a hint of ripe banana behind it, while the rum stays discreetly in the background. On the palate, RumChata Liqueur is soft and full without becoming heavy - cinnamon spreads immediately, followed by cream caramel, vanilla and a light sweetness, while the finish is creamy with a warm, spiced close where the rum finally steps forward.

Frequently asked questions about RumChata Liqueur

What does RumChata Liqueur taste like?

Creamy, sweet and clearly marked by cinnamon and vanilla. The texture resembles cream liqueur, but the spices pull it towards rice pudding and cinnamon roll. The rum sits underneath it all, giving a light warmth in the finish.

Is RumChata a rum or a liqueur?

It's a liqueur. Rum is the base, but the product is blended with cream, sugar and spices and bottled at 15%, far below what a rum must hold. You'll therefore find it alongside the rest of our Liqueur range.

Should RumChata Liqueur be kept chilled?

No, it's not necessary. The cream is homogenised, so the bottle can sit in the cupboard at room temperature. Many still prefer it cold, and a couple of hours in the fridge before serving is a good idea.

How long does an opened bottle of RumChata last?

Around six months after opening according to the producer. Reseal the cap well and avoid direct sunlight and heat.

What can RumChata Liqueur be used for?

It's made to be mixed. The classics are a splash in coffee or hot chocolate, but it also works as a cream substitute in a White Russian, an Espresso Martini or a Piña Colada.

Does RumChata contain milk or gluten?

It contains milk and soy. Traces of gluten and egg may also occur, so it's not suitable if you need to avoid dairy products.

Is RumChata Liqueur a good gift?

Yes, especially for someone who doesn't usually drink much spirits. The 15% strength and creamy sweetness make it easy to enjoy, and the white bottle with gold lettering looks great without extra wrapping.

    What exactly is horchata?

A traditional Latin American drink, typically made from rice or almonds, cinnamon and sugar - the inspiration behind the entire RumChata concept.
