On the small Scottish island of Jura, home to far more red deer than people, whisky has been distilled since 1810. This bottle is an older, discontinued bottling of Jura 10 Year Old - from a time when the label still carried the name The Isle of Jura Distillery Co. Ltd., and the bottle held a full litre rather than today's 70cl.

    Expert Description

Jura 10 Year Old is an Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.

The label states that the whisky is made with water from the Bhaille Mharghaidh spring on the island, and that the distillery in Craighouse has been distilling since 1810. Isle of Jura Distillery remains the only distillery on the island, and ownership has changed hands several times over the decades - from Invergordon Distillers in 1985 to Whyte & Mackay, who took over in 1993.

The colour has been adjusted with caramel, as stated directly on the label - a common practice at the time to keep the colour consistent from bottle to bottle.

As this is an older, discontinued bottling, no guarantee can be given regarding drinkability or fill level. Condition of label, capsule, and contents will vary from bottle to bottle, and this should be regarded primarily as a collector's item rather than an everyday dram.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Honey and ripe pears open the nose, with a trace of hay and a whisper of sea air in the background - typical of the lighter, less peated style found in older Isle of Jura bottlings.

    Palate

Light and malty, with vanilla and sweetness, cut by a faint salty edge and a touch of smoke that never takes over.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and lightly salted, with a last note of honey.

Frequently Asked Questions About Jura 10 Year Old

Is this edition of Jura 10 Year Old still in production?

No, this bottling was discontinued long ago. The label still shows the old distillery name, The Isle of Jura Distillery Co. Ltd., and the bottle held 1 litre rather than today's 70cl. Today's Jura 10 Year Old is a different recipe finished in Oloroso sherry casks.

Can I be sure the whisky is still drinkable?

No guarantee can be given. As an older, discontinued bottling, the capsule, fill level, and contents may have changed over the years, and the bottle is sold primarily as a collector's item.

What makes this bottle a collector's item?

The combination of the old distillery name on the label, the discontinued 1-litre size, and the older label design makes it interesting to collectors of historic Isle of Jura bottlings.

Why has the colour been adjusted with caramel?

This was common practice for Scotch whisky at the time this bottle was filled, used to keep the colour consistent from bottle to bottle regardless of variation between casks.

How should an older bottle of whisky be stored?

Standing upright, cool and dark, ideally with the original capsule intact. High-proof whisky doesn't age the way wine does, but light and temperature swings can affect both the label and the cork seal.

How does this differ from today's Jura 10 Year Old?

Today's Jura 10 Year Old is a different whisky - 70cl, 40%, and finished in Oloroso sherry casks. This older bottling is 43%, 1 litre, and has no sherry finish.
