Distilled on 7 June 1989 and left to rest in a sherry butt for nearly three decades before being bottled in October 2018. Only 485 bottles of this 29 year old GlenAllachie exist, and each one carries an entire distillery lifetime within it.

    Expert's description

GlenAllachie 1989 Cask 100049 Batch 1 is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky distilled on 7 June 1989 and bottled in October 2018 from a single sherry butt, cask #100049, at 29 years of age and 58.1% ABV.

The cask has been allowed to work undisturbed through almost three generations of whisky drinkers, and the result is a dram with the depth and complexity that only comes with time. The 1989 vintage predates most of GlenAllachie's better-known modern releases, making this bottling a rare glimpse into the distillery's older stock.

With only 485 bottles from a single cask, there is no going back once the bottles are gone – this is spirit that cannot be recreated.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Deep and complex, with mature sherry notes, dried fruit and a hint of old oak that speaks to decades of cask rest.

    Palate

Rich and full-bodied, with layers of dark chocolate, walnuts and a warm spiciness that unfolds slowly.

    Finish

Long and dry, with a lingering aftertaste of oak and spice that stays with you.

    Investment Potential

High. A 29 year old single cask from a 1989 vintage with only 485 bottles ranks among the distillery's rarest releases, and that combination of age and low bottle count is exactly what serious collectors chase.

    Did You Know?

When this whisky was laid down in 1989, the GlenAllachie distillery had not yet experienced the change of ownership that later led to Billy Walker's takeover and revival of the site – meaning the cask sat waiting through the entire modern era of GlenAllachie's history.

Frequently Asked Questions about GlenAllachie 1989 Cask 100049 Batch 1 Single Speyside Malt Whisky

How many bottles exist of this release?

Only 485 bottles exist from this single cask, making it one of the rarer releases from the distillery.

    How old is this whisky?

The whisky is 29 years old, distilled on 7 June 1989 and bottled in October 2018.

How should I serve this whisky?

Serve it neat in a nosing glass at room temperature to let the complex notes unfold. Avoid ice, which would shut down the fine detail built up over 29 years.

What is a sherry butt, and why does it matter?

A sherry butt is a large cask type that originally held sherry. Its larger size means slower maturation, which over 29 years has given the whisky depth without being dominated by the wood.

Why is the 1989 vintage significant?

The vintage dates far back in GlenAllachie's history, before the distillery's modern revival, offering a rare glimpse into how the spirit tasted in an earlier era.

Will this whisky be released again?

No. With only 485 bottles from a single cask, this is a one-off release that cannot be repeated once the bottles are gone.

Is this whisky worth the money?

A 29 year old single cask with such a limited bottle count is rare on several levels at once – age, vintage and bottle count rarely align in such a sought-after combination.
