Drambuie Whisky Liqueur with Isle of Skye Malt Whisky 70cl / 40% Distillery Bottling A combination of aged Scotch whiskies, heather honey and a recipe of secret ingredients, Drambuie is one of the best-known whisky liqueurs worldwide.

Drambuie - The liqueur from Skye The story of Drambuie begins over 267 years ago in July 1746. British Prince Charles Edward Stuart was on the run after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden. A battle where he had hoped to become King of Great Britain. The prince was pursued by the king's men in the Highlands of western Scotland, supported by a number of Highland clans. Among them was Clan MacKinnon, whose chief, John MacKinnon, helped the prince to the Isle of Skye. As a thank you for his bravery, the Prince gave John MacKinnon the secret opskrift to his personal likør. A likør which later became known as Drambuie.

In 1873, the liqueur was available at The the Broadford Hotel on Skye and customers who tasted it called it 'a dram buidheach' in Gaelic. 20 years later, the hotel's James Ross family registered it as a trademark. In 1909 Drambuie was produced for the first time in mainland Scotland, paying a royalty to the widow of James Ross and in 1914 the The Drambuie Likør Company was established. In 1916, rumors began to spread south in England about the Drambuie elixir, and it became the first likør introduced to the House of Lords in 1916 and the following year to Buckingham Palace. World War II and especially Prohibition in the United States hit Drambuie hard, and it was almost forgotten. But a very special drink called the Rusty Nail, first introduced at a club in New York in the early 1960s, changed all that. The Rusty Nail has had many names over the years and first officially appears in cocktail history as a 'B.I.F.' cocktail in 1937, named after the British Industries Fair and invented by one F. Benniman. Benniman's version had a 3-1 ratio of Scotch whisky to Drambuie and included bitters. Later versions dropped the bitters, cut down on the whiskey and had names like D&S, Mig-21, Little Club No. 1 and Knucklehead before finally being dubbed Rusty Nail. And when Drambuie itself officially approved the name in 1963, the matter was settled. The actual recipe for Drambuie has always been a secret, but you'll often find it in bars around the world, where it's used for a number of whisky cocktails. The recipe is so secret that only a few people know the recipe and when it is produced, the factory receives a spice blend that is mixed with carefully measured whisky and honey before it is bottled. Drambuie is also available in a more expensive 15-year version, where the whisky, as the name suggests, is somewhat older than in the traditional Drambuie.
