American Whiskey

Bourbon, Rye, Tennessee

Here you can see an overview of our American whiskeys. Here at Whisky.dk we are wild about American whiskeys, and we have only the best selection for you.

American whiskey is produced with a minimum of 51% corn, as it is a plentiful crop in the US. American whiskey production began in the northern states and was introduced to the US by Scottish and Irish immigrants. Later, production moved south to Kentucky and Tennessee, two states well-known today for their whiskey production. Bourbon is especially recognized as a product of Kentucky, while a brand like Jack Daniels is the most famous Tennessee whiskey. There are several types of American whiskey, of which these three types are the most common - all of which you can find here at Whisky.dk: By clicking on the categories below, you can discover our wide assortment of whiskeys. If you're more interested in smokey/peaty whiskeys, you can find them here.

  • Jack Daniels Gentleman Jack Rare Tennessee Whiskey Sour Mash 40% ABV
    Item no.: 22227865486-2

It's called Double Mellowed for a reason — this expression goes through the charcoal filtering twice instead of once.

    Expert description

Gentleman Jack is a Tennessee Whiskey filtered through sugar maple charcoal both before and after it rests in the barrel — an extra round compared to Old No. 7, giving it the name 'Double Mellowed'. Jack Daniel's Distillery was founded in 1866 by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and is officially registered as America's first distillery. All production still happens on the same site, where the whiskey is filtered drop by drop through nearly 3 metres of sugar maple charcoal before going into new, charred oak barrels — the Lincoln County Process that defines Tennessee Whiskey.

The extra filtering gives a noticeably softer, rounder profile than the core range, with fewer sharp edges from the grain and the barrel.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is soft and round, with vanilla, caramel and a hint of fresh fruit.

    Palate

The palate is unusually smooth for a Tennessee Whiskey, with sweetness, vanilla and a touch of spice without bitterness.

    Finish

The finish is short and soft, without the sharpness sometimes found in younger American whiskeys.

The name Lincoln County Process comes from the original county line: the distillery sat in Lincoln County until 1871, when it became part of the newly formed Moore County — but the name for the filtering method stuck.

    Expert description

Jack Daniel's Tennessee Apple starts from Jack Daniel's classic Tennessee Whiskey and adds natural apple flavour on top.

The result is a sweeter, more approachable take on the brand's style, meant to be enjoyed on the rocks or in cocktails rather than neat like the core range.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is led by apple, vanilla and caramel from the underlying whiskey.

    Palate

Straight Rye isn't just a variant — it's a different grain recipe, filtered through the same Lincoln County Process.

    Expert description

Tennessee Straight Rye is made from a mash of at least 51% rye, which classifies it as a 'straight rye' under US law, while going through the same charcoal filtering as the rest of the range. All production still happens on the same site, where the whiskey is filtered drop by drop through nearly 3 metres of sugar maple charcoal before going into new, charred oak barrels — the Lincoln County Process that defines Tennessee Whiskey.

A ready-made Manhattan, developed with Esquire and barrel-finished a second time after blending.

    Expert description

Jefferson's The Manhattan Barrel Finished Cocktail is a pre-mixed cocktail, bottled at 34%, developed by Jefferson's in collaboration with Esquire magazine and then editor-in-chief David Granger. The cocktail is built on Jefferson's 6-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon, originally distilled to 125 proof and reduced to 82 proof, before being blended with sweet and dry vermouth in a 'Perfect Manhattan' style, along with barrel-aged spiced cherry bitters. After blending, the cocktail is aged a further roughly 4 months in used bourbon casks before bottling at 68 proof — a process that gives it a deeper, more integrated character than a freshly mixed Manhattan.

    Tasting notes

    Item no.: 059763-615-740

An older label version of the classic — Old Version 3 shows how Jim Beam's design has evolved over the years.

    Expert description

This 175 cl bottle is an older label edition of Jim Beam White Label Sour Mash Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, bottled at 40%. The Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky, dates back to 1795, when Jacob Beam sold his first barrel of bourbon under the name "Old Jake Beam". The family has made bourbon in Kentucky for over 200 years and seven generations, and the brand took its current name in 1943 in honour of James Beauregard "Jim" Beam, who rebuilt the distillery in 120 days after Prohibition ended. The recipe is built on the Beam family's traditional mash of corn, rye and malted barley, a blend the family says has stayed largely unchanged across all seven generations.

The bottle is of interest to collectors of older Jim Beam packaging, since the recipe follows the classic White Label style.

    Tasting notes

Blacker label, longer ageing — the Black expression is Jim Beam's answer for anyone wanting a bit more depth than White Label.

    Expert description

Jim Beam Black Extra Aged is a Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey aged longer than the core White Label, giving it more colour and depth. Bottled at 43%. Expert description

Pre-Prohibition Rye is a rye whiskey referencing the style from before American Prohibition (1920-1933), when rye-based whiskeys were far more common than today. Bottled at 40%.
