Distilled in 2011 and 2013 and bottled in December 2020 in 65 bottles. The cask journey is three-stage: first maturation on bourbon casks, then a boost on virgin casks of Danish fleet oak from Erholm Estate in Funen, and finally a finish on a 50-litre STR cask. The intense cask character of virgin Danish oak – with powerful tannins and intense oak notes – is central to this whisky.

The virgin Danish oak casks in The Admiral's Revenge were made from trees at Erholm Estate – planted under a royal decree following the Napoleonic Wars of 1807-09, when Denmark lost its fleet. Pedro Ximenez (PX) is a grape grown in the Jerez region of southern Spain. The grapes are sun-dried to raisins, concentrating the sugar content to the extreme. The resulting sherry is so sweet it is almost syrupy. A PX cask that has held this sherry transfers its dense sweetness directly to the matured distillate.

Peat and bourbon are two things that don't always go hand in hand. But Mosgaard has done it – and batch number one is here. Peated malt meets the bourbon cask's vanilla and sweetness in an organic Danish expression at 48.4%.

Mosgaard Peated Bourbon Batch #1 is an organic Peated Danish Single Malt Whisky bottled at 48.4% from Mosgaard Distillery in Odense. The whisky is the first batch in Mosgaard's Peated Bourbon series – peated malt matured in ex-bourbon casks. It is a combination that creates an interesting contrast: the smoke from the peat meets the sweet vanilla and caramel of the bourbon cask, and the result is a smoky expression with a softer, fruitier edge than typical peated whiskies matured in ex-sherry casks. Bottled in 50 cl format.

Nose

Smoky peat with the bourbon cask's sweet vanilla and caramel underneath. An interesting intersection of smoke and sweetness.

Palate

Fresh smoke with bourbon vanilla, light citrus sweetness and grain in the background. The bourbon cask softens the peat and gives a more fruity and approachable smoke style.

Finish

Medium long with lingering smoke and a soft, lightly vanilla-sweet close from the bourbon cask.

Most peated single malts use ex-sherry casks to amplify the smoke. Mosgaard's Peated Bourbon Batch #1 does the opposite and gives the peat a light, fresh bourbon foundation instead of a dark, fruity sherry base.
