Oloroso. The dry, nutty sherry classic. Thy Whisky Oloroso Shared Cask No 442 is a Danish single malt finished in an Oloroso sherry cask and bottled directly from the cask without dilution.

    Expert description

Thy Whisky Oloroso Shared Cask No 442 is a Danish Single Malt Whisky bottled at cask strength 60.1% in a 50 cl bottle. Distilled and matured at Thy Whisky Distillery in Thy. Oloroso is one of the classic dry sherry types with characteristic nutty aromas, oak and dark fruit. Cask No. 442 is a Shared Cask – bottled for a group of private co-cask owners.

The Oloroso cask and the north Jutland distillate meet in an interesting contrast: the distillate's fresh, malt-based character confronted with the sherry cask's dry, nutty depth. The result is a more complex and structured whisky than the distillery's un-cask-influenced expressions.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dry and nutty with walnut, light chocolate, a little oak and a soft fruitiness in the background. The Oloroso character is clear.

    Palate

Complex and structured with dry nuts, malt base, light pepper and the sherry cask depth. Drier than the PX variant. Very satisfying.

    Finish

Long and nutty with light dryness and oak. Striking and persistent.

    Did you know?

Oloroso is one of the oldest and most well-known sherry types. The name means "fragrant" in Spanish, and Oloroso sherry oxidises during maturation – unlike Fino and Manzanilla, which mature under a protective layer of yeast. This gives the dry, nutty and complex character that whisky enthusiasts love in Oloroso casks.

Frequently asked questions about Thy Whisky Oloroso Shared Cask No 442

What is an Oloroso sherry cask?

Oloroso is a dry, oxidatively matured sherry with typical nutty aromas, light fruit and oak. The casks that have matured Oloroso sherry impart a complex and dry sherry character to the whisky. Oloroso casks typically give a more structured and drier finish than the sweet PX casks.

What is the difference between Thy Whisky PX Cask No 445 and Oloroso Cask No 442?

Both are Shared Cask expressions from Thy Whisky at approximately 60%, but with very different flavour profiles. PX is sweet, fruity and raisin-influenced. Oloroso is dry, nutty and more complex. If you have both, you have two extremes in the sherry-whisky world.

Is Oloroso Shared Cask No 442 chill filtered?

No. Bottled at cask strength 60.1% without chill filtration and with natural colour. This preserves the full cask character and texture from the Oloroso sherry cask.

What pairs well with Thy Whisky Oloroso Shared Cask No 442?

The dry, nutty profile pairs excellently with nuts and almonds, hard cheeses like manchego and gouda, and dark dishes with mushrooms. It is a whisky for contemplation – not as an aperitif.

Is Oloroso Shared Cask No 442 limited?

Yes. Single cask, limited stock. Discontinued Shared Cask numbers from Thy Whisky cannot be replenished.

Is Oloroso finishing common in whisky?

Oloroso casks are widely used in Scotland – Macallan uses them as the foundation for many expressions. In Danish whisky, Oloroso finishing is rare, and Thy Whisky's edition is one of the very few opportunities to try the combination of Danish single malt and Oloroso sherry.
