In 2018, Macallan launched a series that would challenge everything the distillery had done before. Concept Number 1 is the first bottle — inspired by surrealist art and designed to break with received notions of what Macallan whisky can and should taste like.

Expert description

Macallan Concept Number 1 is a discontinued Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky from 2018, matured equally in sherry seasoned oak casks and ex-bourbon casks, bottled at 40%. The Concept series was Macallan's response to contemporary art's urge to challenge and provoke — the whisky is made to deviate, not to confirm. The maturation time is split equally between the two cask types, and the result is an expression that is lighter and more citrus-oriented than the classic Macallan expressions dominated by sherry casks.

As the first in the series and as a discontinued expression, Concept Number 1 attracts attention from collectors. It was not produced in unlimited quantities, and access to bottles continues to decrease.

Macallan Harmony Collection Jing is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43.9%, created in collaboration with Jing Tea. The whisky is inspired by Phoenix Honey Orchid Tea — an oolong tea from the mountain range of the same name in China's Guangdong province. Harmony Collection Jing is the fifth release in the series and combines Macallan's cask maturation with the world of tea sensory.

The result is a whisky with an unexpected floral-fruit complexity — something between the classic depth of sherry and the light, floral character of tea. A whisky that is fun to taste and even more fun to discuss.

Miltonduff 2007/2020 Imperial Milk Stout Finish is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky from The Coopers Choice, matured in a bourbon cask and finished in an Imperial Milk Stout cask at 51.1%.

The beer cask came from Spey Valley Brewery and had previously held an Imperial Milk Stout, itself matured in a used Bruichladdich cask, giving this Miltonduff an extra layer of dark malt and chocolate on top of the distillery's usually light style. Only 304 bottles were filled from cask #9087.

Miltonduff 2011/2021 Coopers Choice 10 Year Old is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky from The Vintage Malt Whisky Co., matured in a fresh bourbon barrel and bottled at cask strength 56.5%.

The Coopers Choice series was founded in 1992 by Brian Crook under The Vintage Malt Whisky Co. and is known for consistently high quality in its single cask releases. This Miltonduff was filled from a single fresh bourbon barrel yielding only 228 bottles.

Nose

The glass first greets you with honey, quickly followed by shortbread and a hint of vanilla.

The expert's description

Adventures In The Meadow is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky from a single bourbon hogshead, bottled at cask strength 54.7%.

The cask carried number 48 and gave 308 bottles after sixteen years. The whisky is non-chill filtered and of natural colour, so what is in the glass comes from the cask and nothing else.

The bottling comes from Whiskyheroes, a range by the Glasgow-based company Brave New Spirits. The series consists of single casks and small batches matured in classic bourbon and sherry casks, and the labels are drawn from vintage action comics. Tamdhu-Glenlivet 2013/2025 Cadenhead's Original Collection 12 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in refill oloroso hogsheads and bottled at 46%.

This release belongs to Cadenhead's Original Collection, the series in which Scotland's oldest independent bottler presents single distillery spirit with nothing added and nothing filtered out. The liquid comes from Tamdhu in Knockando, a distillery founded in 1897 and now owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, who have shaped it into one of Speyside's most sherry-driven malts. The "Glenlivet" suffix is an old regional naming tradition from a time when the name signalled quality across Speyside rather than pointing to another distillery.

The whisky spent twelve years in refill oloroso hogsheads, casks that had already given up much of their first sherry punch. That means a more restrained, savoury sherry note, letting Tamdhu's own spiced, fruit-forward character lead rather than being buried under dark sherry. This particular batch was bottled in May 2026 as part of the Original Collection.

Little Brown Dog Spirits is an independent bottler founded in Aberdeenshire in 2018 by Andrew Smith and Chris Reid, recognisable by the little brown dog that features on every label. This release was distilled at Tamnavulin in 2010 and matured on bourbon casks until 2024, when the whisky was moved into a highly active port pipe. Tamnavulin Red Wine Cask Edition No. 2 is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in American oak casks and finished in Spanish Grenache red wine casks, bottled at 40%.

Edition No. 2 is part of Tamnavulin's ongoing series of wine cask releases, where the distillery's soft, sweet base style is set against different European wine styles. Here the choice falls on Grenache, a red wine grape widely grown in Spain, known for lending casks bold fruit and a lightly spiced warmth.

After maturing in American oak, the whisky moves into the used Grenache casks, where it picks up colour and flavour from the red wine. The result is a mahogany-gold whisky with a distinct layer of red fruit on top of Tamnavulin's characteristic sweetness.

Caramelised orange and marzipan with nuances of vanilla and a light creamy sweetness.

Palate

Charming notes of red berries meet subtle tones of toffee apple, peach and a hint of coffee.
