Mahogany gold in the glass and Spanish red wine in the casks. Red Wine Cask Edition No. 2 is Tamnavulin's take on a whisky that tastes of caramelised orange and red berries in the same breath.

    Expert description

Tamnavulin Red Wine Cask Edition No. 2 is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in American oak casks and finished in Spanish Grenache red wine casks, bottled at 40%.

Edition No. 2 is part of Tamnavulin's ongoing series of wine cask releases, where the distillery's soft, sweet base style is set against different European wine styles. Here the choice falls on Grenache, a red wine grape widely grown in Spain, known for lending casks bold fruit and a lightly spiced warmth.

After maturing in American oak, the whisky moves into the used Grenache casks, where it picks up colour and flavour from the red wine. The result is a mahogany-gold whisky with a distinct layer of red fruit on top of Tamnavulin's characteristic sweetness.

Frequently asked questions about Tamnavulin Red Wine Cask Edition No. 2

What is the difference between Red Wine Cask Edition No. 2 and Spanish Grenache Edition?

Both releases use American oak for primary maturation and Grenache red wine casks for finishing, sharing the same basic production process. The naming reflects different points in Tamnavulin's series of wine cask releases rather than a fundamentally different recipe. In terms of flavour, they sit close to one another.

What is a Grenache red wine grape?

Grenache is one of the world's most widely planted red wine grapes, grown especially in Spain and southern France. The grape produces wines with bold fruit, moderate acidity and often a spiced warmth. These characteristics partly transfer to the cask and then to the whisky during finishing.

Why does the name include "No. 2"?

The label marks this as the second release in an ongoing series of red wine cask editions from Tamnavulin. The series lets the distillery experiment with different casks and batches over time, while keeping the base recipe of American oak plus red wine finish consistent.

How does the red wine cask affect the whisky's colour?

Red wine casks impart a mahogany-gold to lightly reddish hue, clearly different from the paler gold seen in whisky matured solely in oak casks. The colour comes directly from contact with wood stained by the previous red wine. It is also one of the most visible signs of a wine cask finish.

How should this whisky be served?

At room temperature in a standard whisky glass, the red wine fruit and creamy sweetness come through best. A single ice cube can be used for a cooler, more restrained serve. Avoid diluting too much, as this can wash out the subtle toffee and coffee notes.

Is this whisky a good fit for red wine drinkers?

Yes, the red fruit character and soft sweetness from the Grenache casks make this whisky a familiar-feeling starting point for red wine drinkers curious about whisky. At the same time, it retains the underlying Speyside lightness, keeping it approachable without becoming overly complex.
