  • Ardnamurchan Cask Strength AD 2023 bottle, peated Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky at cask strength
    Item no.: 2222785588-

The month code has gone from the name. From 2023 the series is called simply by the year, and it is the same kind of decision as when the batch number disappeared from AD/: the distillery has stopped numbering its way out of things.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan Cask Strength AD 2023 is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 58.1% full cask strength by Adelphi. It was composed from forty peated bourbon barrels and ten unpeated casks, bottled on 2 October 2023 in an outturn of 13,683.

Ardnamurchan makes both peated and unpeated malt, and both styles go into this series. Cask strength means the whisky has not been diluted with water before bottling, giving more concentration and a clearer cask character than the house standard at 46.8%.

The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured, and every bottle carries a QR code giving access to blockchain-registered production data. The distillery sits at Glenbeg on the westernmost mainland peninsula in Scotland.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Peat smoke and maritime salinity first, then vanilla and coconut from the bourbon wood. A clear cereal sweetness runs beneath it all, and at this strength the alcohol is up front, so let the glass rest a couple of minutes.

    Palate

Powerful and oily. Vanilla, honey and baked fruit open, then the smoke arrives with weight along with black pepper and a dry oak note. The cask strength gives concentration, yet the whisky is not harsh.

    Finish

Long and dry. Smoke, salt and spice, with a final malt sweetness lingering beneath it all.

The bottling date is 2 October 2023, and it appears on the bottle. Ardnamurchan consistently states this sort of thing, the date, the cask split and the outturn, where most distilleries settle for a year. It makes it possible to compare two releases on something other than taste.

  • Ardnamurchan Champagne Cask Paul Launois bottle, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky at cask strength
    Item no.: 222278558887-9987 - 2022

Champagne casks barely exist. The houses in Champagne use their own casks again and again and rarely sell them on. Getting hold of 195 litre casks from Paul Launois in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is therefore an unusual thing to be able to write on a whisky label.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan Champagne Cask Paul Launois AD 06:22 is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in 195 litre champagne casks from Paul Launois and bottled at 57.5% cask strength. The outturn was 2,661 bottles.

Paul Launois is based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs, one of the villages in Champagne classified as grand cru. The area is known for chardonnay, and casks from there carry a far lighter and more mineral character than the sherry and port casks whisky is usually finished in.

A cask of 195 litres is small enough to work quickly, and at 57.5% the concentration is high. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Green apple and lemon peel first, with a light bready note as from champagne’s time on the lees. Beneath sit Ardnamurchan’s own peat smoke and a maritime salinity, plus vanilla from the bourbon maturation before the finish.

    Palate

Fresh and taut to begin, which is unusual at this strength. Apple, citrus and a chalky minerality open, then the smoke arrives and brings weight. A fine acidity runs the whole way and keeps the whisky light on its feet despite the 57.5%.

    Finish

Long and dry. Citrus, mineral and smoke, with a final malt sweetness lingering.

    Investment Potential

Medium. Champagne casks are rare in a whisky context, and an outturn of 2,661 bottles from a named grand cru house is not something that comes round again. Experimental cask releases from young distilleries often become sought after once the series has ended.

    Did You Know?

Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is one of only seventeen villages in Champagne with grand cru status, the highest classification the region has. The soil is chalk, and it is the chalk that gives the wines their mineral character. Some of that carries into the wood, and on into the whisky.

  • Ardnamurchan Madeira Cask Release bottle, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Ardnamurchan
    Item no.: 2222785333-7774100

Madeira is the only wine in the world that improves by being heated. The wine matures at around fifty degrees for months on end, and the casks carry that treatment with them: a cooked, nutty sweetness you will not find in other wine casks.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan Madeira Cask Release AD is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in madeira casks and bottled at 52%. It combines the distillery’s craft approach and sustainable production with the distinctive influence of the madeira wood.

Madeira differs from other fortified wines in undergoing a heat treatment during maturation, where the wine is held warm for a long period. That gives a caramelised, nutty character not found in sherry or port, and the casks carry it on to the whisky.

At 52% there is body enough to carry both the madeira sweetness and Ardnamurchan’s own maritime character. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe stone fruit, candied orange peel and honey open the nose, joined by a light touch of sea breeze and spice. A nutty, almost caramelised note sits beneath it all, the fingerprint of the madeira cask.

    Palate

Roasted nuts, dark caramel and dried fruit melting together with a light mineral character and a hint of smoke in the background. At 52% the texture is full, and the sweetness is dry rather than syrupy.

    Finish

Long, warm and silky with an elegant sweetness from the madeira casks and a final dry nutty note.

    Did You Know?

Madeira is matured by heat because the wine was historically carried as ballast in ships crossing the tropics. It was discovered that the wine improved on the journey, from the heat and the movement. Today the effect is reproduced artificially, but the cooked, nutty character still comes from something that began as an accident at sea.

  • Ardnamurchan Mezcal Cask Release bottle, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a mezcal cask finish
    Item no.: 222338-4451

Mezcal and peated whisky have more in common than you might think. Both get their smoke from something that has lain in the ground and burned: agave hearts in a stone-lined pit in Oaxaca, peat under a malting floor in Scotland. Here they meet in the same cask.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan Mezcal Cask Release AD is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky first matured in traditional bourbon and sherry casks and then finished in used mezcal casks from Mexico, bottled at 55%.

Mezcal is known for its smoky, earthy character, which comes from agave hearts roasted in earth pits over embers. The casks add a depth and complexity distinct from classic Scottish malt whiskies, a mineral structure not found in wine casks.

The release is part of the distillery’s continuing work with unconventional cask types. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sweet malt and a lightly medicinal peat smoke open, quickly followed by characteristic mezcal notes: green agave, citrus, white pepper and toasted oak. It is all rounded off by a subtle spiced undertone.

    Palate

Green apples and fresh lime meet a finely balanced peat smoke and a lightly saline character. Warm notes of vanilla, honey and a touch of cinnamon and clove sit in the middle. The texture is full, and the minerality from the mezcal casks gives structure without drowning the fruity base.

    Finish

Long and mineral. Smoke, citrus and a dry, almost stony close where the agave lingers longest.

    Did You Know?

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts in a pit in the ground, covered with stones and glowing wood, for several days. That is where the smoke comes from, not from the cask or the distillation. The method resembles Scottish peat firing more than anything else in the spirits world, which is probably why the two work together.

  • Ardnamurchan AD Miniature gift set with four bottles of Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 222333-99963

Four bottles, four cask stories, the same spirit. It is the easiest way to understand what a cask actually does to whisky, because everything else is held constant and only the wood changes.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan AD Miniature 2024 is a gift set of four Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in 5 cl format, bottled between 46.8% and 50%. The set gathers the distillery’s core expression and three cask variants, and all four are neither chill filtered nor coloured.

The first bottle is AD/, the house standard with 65% bourbon casks and 35% sherry casks. The second is the sherry cask expression, the third the rum cask, and the fourth a single cask Sauternes. Between them they cover the whole span from dry bourbon wood to sweet wine cask.

Ardnamurchan sits at Glenbeg on the westernmost mainland peninsula in Scotland and has been distilling since July 2014. The distillery makes both peated and unpeated malt, and both styles go into the releases.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

AD/ opens with orchard fruit, beach pebbles and eucalyptus. The sherry cask gives Murray mint and smoked bacon. The rum cask brings salted cashews and vanilla extract, and the Sauternes offers nectarines and sweet pastry.

    Palate

A common thread runs across all four: tobacco leaves, salt water and a touch of marzipan from the spirit itself. On top sit the contributions of the wood, sticky spare ribs from the sherry, coastal breeze from the rum and rich wax from the Sauternes cask.

    Finish

Different from bottle to bottle, but over the same saline maritime floor. That shared denominator is exactly what the set makes it possible to hear.

    Item no.: 059763-615-452

The cask has crossed the Atlantic twice. First as a bourbon barrel from Kentucky down to the Caribbean, where it held rum for a few years, and then on to a west-facing peninsula in Scotland. Three continents in one piece of wood.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan Rum Cask Release AD is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky first matured in bourbon casks and then finished in Caribbean rum casks, bottled at 55% in 2023.

Rum casks are not an obvious partner for peated whisky, but they work better than you might expect. Rum lays in a dry, almost green sugar cane sweetness quite different from sherry’s raisins or port’s red fruit. Together with Ardnamurchan’s saline maritime character the result reads tropical rather than sweet.

The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured. Ardnamurchan sits at Glenbeg on the westernmost mainland peninsula in Scotland and has been distilling since July 2014.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Salted cashews and vanilla extract first, with a coastal breeze behind. Beneath sit dry sugar cane sweetness and a light peat smoke, along with a note of toasted coconut from the bourbon maturation.

    Palate

Dry sweetness to begin, sugar cane rather than syrup. Vanilla and baked banana follow, then the smoke arrives along with a saline minerality. At 55% the texture is oily and full, and the rum cask gives direction rather than weight.

    Finish

Long and dry. Salt, smoke and a final sugar cane sweetness that lets go slowly.

The great majority of rum casks in the whisky world were originally bourbon barrels. Kentucky may only use its casks once, so they are sold on, first to the Caribbean for rum, then to Scotland for whisky. A single oak cask can therefore hold three different spirits across three continents before ending up as garden furniture.

  • Ardnamurchan Sauternes Cask bottle, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a Sauternes finish
    Item no.: 05333-8875

Sauternes casks are expensive and rare because the wine itself is. The châteaux in Bordeaux need their barriques and do not readily sell them on. When one nonetheless ends up on a west Scottish peninsula, it is worth noticing.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan Sauternes Cask is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky first matured in bourbon casks and then finished in selected Sauternes wine casks, bottled at 50% in 2024.

Sauternes is the sweetest of the white wines of Bordeaux, made from grapes affected by noble rot. The casks add a subtle sweetness and a complexity that settles over the classic Highland malt profile without drowning it: honey, dried fruit and a lightly spiced close.

The natural colour and unfiltered character preserve the whisky’s authentic flavour, and at 50% there is body enough to carry both the wine cask sweetness and Ardnamurchan’s own maritime edge.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Nectarines and sweet pastry first, with honey and candied citrus peel behind. A rich waxiness sits beneath it all, and a light peat smoke and saline maritime note push through.

    Palate

Rich notes of honey and dried fruit open, then a lightly spiced warmth and a dry oak note arrive. The sweetness is balanced rather than dominant, and at 50% the texture is full and nuanced the whole way.

    Finish

Medium to long. Honey, spice and a dry close where the maritime salinity lingers beneath the sweetness.

In Sauternes the harvest is among the most labour-intensive in the wine world. The grapes are picked berry by berry over several passes as the noble rot spreads unevenly through the vineyard. Some estates reckon on a single glass of wine per vine. That is why the casks rarely leave Bordeaux.

  • Ardnamurchan The Midgie bottle, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured with port casks
    Item no.: 222338-48878

The Scottish midge is a national affliction. It weighs nothing, it arrives in millions, and it ruins any summer evening in the Highlands. Naming a whisky after it is either self-deprecation or defiance, and probably both.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan The Midgie is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky composed of 50% ex-American bourbon casks, 48% port barriques and 2% sherry casks, bottled at 48%. The whisky is made from 75% unpeated and 25% peated malt.

The cask make-up is unusual in that the port barriques account for almost half. Most distilleries use port as a short finish, while The Midgie carries the casks as a full half of the blend. That gives red fruit and a vinous sweetness that does not normally take up so much room.

The ratio of peated to unpeated malt is also set differently from the house standard: only a quarter is peated here, where AD/ is an even split. The smoke is therefore a suggestion rather than a floor. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Complex from the first moment. Layers of cooked ham meet charred pineapple, prunes dipped in salt and strawberry jam on a salted cracker. The aromas round off with almond oil, coconut macaroon and a fresh touch of green mint.

    Palate

Salt-baked pear, meadowsweet and wild flowers joined by lemon thyme. Deeper notes of raisin, cherry and cocoa powder add warmth, while pink peppercorns bring a subtle spiced bite.

    Finish

Elegant and persistent with a gentle breath of liquid smoke, Himalayan salt and redcurrant juice. The balance between sweet and salty elements gives a dry, long-lasting close.

    Item no.: 22227865446-10163

The oak trees at Erholm Estate in Funen have been standing for a long time. Two hundred years ago the plan was for them to become warships. Instead they became whisky casks – which is a better idea.

    Expert description

Ardor Danish Oak Batch 167 is an organic Danish Single Malt Whisky bottled at 46% at 5 years of age. Distilled by Isle of Fionia / Nyborg Distillery in Nyborg, Funen, and matured in casks made from oak trees at Erholm Estate in Funen – part of the historic Danish "fleet oak" planting. The casks were used as a "boost": the whisky spent a short period on these Danish oak barriques from March 2018 to October 2018 to absorb the powerful tannins and characteristic bitterness of young Danish oak. 954 bottles produced.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Beautifully fruity with pears and apricots as the main elements. Hazelnuts and Virginia tobacco lay a nutty, aromatic base, and the fresh oak tannin gives a sharp, bright note.

    Palate

Gentle and sweet at 46% with the fruitiness carried from the nose. The oak tannins from the Danish barriques are present as a fresh, lightly astringent frame around the sweet fruit core. A surprisingly elegant balance.

    Finish

  • Bottle of Armorik 10 Ans Edition from the Breton distillery Warenghem
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197124 - 2021

Ten years is a short time in the whisky world, but for a still-young French distillery, it's a milestone that deserves its own bottle.

    Expert's description

Armorik 10 Ans Edition 2022 is a Single Breton Malt Whisky from the Warenghem distillery, bottled at 46 percent.

The whisky is made from Breton barley and French wheat and has matured for 10 years in oak casks. 2,000 bottles were filled of this release, which is non-chill filtered, and the extended cask time gives the whisky a complexity that clearly sets it apart from the house's younger bottlings.

Warenghem has been distilling in Brittany since the early 1900s and helped pave the way for French whisky to be taken seriously far beyond France's borders. Armorik 10 Ans is clear proof that years in cask give direction to a style still young in the wider whisky world.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is big and complex with strong, creamy and fruity notes, a hint of caramel, apricot, camphor and a final twist of wood.

    Palate

The palate offers citrus followed by a round and rich character, with hints of camphor, mango, maple syrup and apricot.

    Finish

    Expert's description

Armorik Classic is a Single Breton Malt Whisky from the Warenghem distillery, bottled at 46 percent.

Armorik is named after Brittany's old Celtic name and is made from Breton barley and French wheat - a combination that gives the whisky a different character to most Scotch malts. Warenghem was the first French distillery to commit seriously to whisky, and Armorik Classic remains the house's most accessible bottling.

Warenghem is Brittany's first whisky distillery and has been distilling since the early 1900s, long before French whisky was a category most people had heard of. Armorik - the region's old Celtic name - is the distillery's flagship and a reminder that whisky isn't only a Scottish and Irish craft.

  • Bottle of Arran Whisky finished in Pinot Noir wine casks from the Isle of Arran
    Item no.: 222596-1996633

An island full of wild ripe berries, sea air and a trace of Burgundy. It's not an obvious combination — but Arran isn't an obvious distillery either.

A vintage bottling from 1999, finished in Pinot Noir wine casks and bottled exclusively for the Danish trade market.

    Expert Description

Arran 12 Year Old 1999 Vintage Pinot Noir Wine Cask is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in Pinot Noir wine casks, bottled at 46%.

The Isle of Arran sits in the Firth of Clyde west of Glasgow and is often described as Scotland in miniature. The Lochranza distillery opened in 1995 and is the island's only one, after British excise authorities shut down the last legal distillation in the 1800s. This 1999 Vintage was distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2011 after 12 years in cask, made exclusively for the professional Danish whisky trade. The whisky began its life in ex-bourbon casks, Arran's primary maturation wood, before receiving a finish in Pinot Noir wine casks — a grape with light tannins, red berry notes and a lightly earthy edge that leaves a clear mark without taking over from the whisky.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe red berries, macerated cherry and a touch of grape juice, followed by spices such as star anise, cinnamon and white pepper, with a clear and pleasant malted sweetness and a trace of salted island character.

    Palate

Silky and lightly oily with clear fruitiness — grape, red berries, fermented apple and a peppery edge, tied together by caramel sweetness and vanilla.

    Finish

Medium to long, spiced, with dryness from the wine cask and a warm island character that slowly fades.

Because the cask had already given up most of its initial power to an earlier fill, it draws more gently on the whisky this time — the result is a subtler, but still clear, sherry character layered over Arran's own fruit sweetness. Distilled in April 2006 and bottled in July 2024 after 18 years in wood, the whisky is bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered and with natural colour. Only 244 bottles exist, all reserved for Denmark.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sultana raisin, spiced cake and dark chocolate, tied together by a gentle sweetness from the cask.

    Palate

Deep and beguiling with ripe plum, caramelised sugar and a fine spiced warmth.

    Finish

Medium in length, soft and lightly dry, closing on a final trace of oak.

    Did You Know?

A "refill" cask has already given up most of its colour and spice to an earlier whisky – which is why the distillery's maturation team typically lets refill casks rest longer, as with this 18-year-old, to reach the same depth as a younger first-fill cask.

  • Bottle of Arran Single Cask Whisky matured in sherry cask from Lochranza Distillery
    Item no.: 0597557-7446

Twelve years is a long time for an Arran — most bottles from Lochranza reach the shelf much younger. This one was left to sit, and you can taste it in every drop.

A single sherry hogshead, selected for the Danish market and bottled without a single addition.

    Expert Description

Arran 2012/2025 Single Cask Denmark 12 Year Old is a Single Islands Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a 1st fill sherry hogshead and bottled at 57.9%.

Distilled in September 2012, the whisky spent twelve years in a single 1st fill sherry cask before being drawn straight from the wood, non-chill filtered and with natural colour. Only 288 bottles exist, all reserved for Denmark. Unlike several of the distillery's other single cask releases, this one carries no peat at all, leaving the sherry cask's nuance and Arran's own fruit character all the room they need.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dried fig, date and raisin meet a fresh note of orange peel and a touch of nutmeg.

    Palate

Dry yet full-bodied — dark chocolate and toasted nuts dance alongside ripe fruit, while the sherry's spiced warmth gives structure without weighing it down.

    Finish

Long and lingering with coffee, cocoa and a mild spiced warmth that fades slowly.

    Expert Description

Arran 2015/2024 Single Cask Denmark 9 Year Old is a Single Islands Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a 1st fill Oloroso hogshead and bottled at 60.2%.

The cask is a 1st fill Oloroso hogshead, meaning the sherry wood had never held whisky before this fill, so the full force of the Spanish oak goes straight into the spirit. Distilled in April 2015 and bottled in July 2024 after nine years of maturation, the whisky is bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered and with natural colour. Only 326 bottles came from this single cask, and the entire batch is reserved for Denmark.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh citrus peel and spiced ginger meet a gentle sweetness of vanilla and ripe apricot, while the sherry cask lays a deep, dark base underneath it all.

    Palate

Rich and layered with dried fig and raisin, a soft caramel sweetness from the Oloroso wood, and a warm, spiced edge that carries through from first sip to last.

    Finish

Long and warming, closing on a final trace of dark chocolate and oak that softens slowly.

The Lochranza distillery went without a single legal distillation on Arran for more than 150 years – the first licensed still since 1837 only fired up in 1995, which makes even the oldest Arran bottlings fairly young in Scotch whisky history.

  • Bottle of peated Arran Single Cask Whisky with smoky character from Lochranza Distillery
    Item no.: 0597557-7445

Not every Arran bottling is light and sweet. This one runs the other way — dark, peaty, and richer than most people expect from this distillery.

A single bourbon cask, hand-selected for Denmark, with 50 ppm of peat smoke taking the lead role.

    Expert Description

Arran 2015/2025 Single Cask Denmark 9 Year Old 50 ppm is a Single Islands Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a 1st fill bourbon barrel and bottled at 59.6%.

Arran usually distills a lightly peated or unpeated malt, but this single cask is made from barley peated to a full 50 ppm — double the level of the distillery's standard Machrie Moor. Distilled in October 2015, the whisky spent nine years in a single 1st fill bourbon barrel before being bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered and with natural colour. Only 246 bottles exist from this cask, all reserved for the Danish market.

Ulrik Bertelsen from Whisky.dk has tasted it and calls it one of the finest peated releases he has met from Arran — a dram where raw power and aromatic depth meet in fine balance.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Rich peat smoke with hints of bonfire and a touch of iodine, but also an underlying sweetness of vanilla and ripe pear that keeps the nose inviting rather than harsh.

    Palate

Softer than expected — baked apple and tropical fruit reach the palate first, before the peat smoke rolls in like a warm wave, carried by the bourbon cask's creamy texture.

    Finish

Long and warming with grilled citrus, white pepper and a dry trace of oak that lingers well after the last sip.
