Beneath the shadow of Ben Nevis in Fort William, where Scotland's highest mountain looms over the distillery, lies a quietly understated character. No smoke, no fuss – just malt, clay and time, captured in a couple of old sherry casks and released by a man who knows exactly what he's doing.

Expert description of Ben Nevis 2014 Signatory Vintage Un-Chillfiltered Collection 8 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Butts

This bottle comes from Signatory Vintage, one of Scotland's most respected independent bottlers, and forms part of their Un-Chillfiltered Collection – a series always released unfiltered and uncoloured, letting the full character of the cask shine through. Ben Nevis was distilled on 8 December 2014 and matured in two 2nd fill Oloroso sherry butts, cask numbers 277 and 278, before being bottled in January 2023 after 8 years in wood.

Ben Nevis distillery is known for a rustic, powerful spirit style built for long maturation – particularly in sherry casks, where the malt's weight meets the cask's sweetness and spice without either one taking over. The two refill butts here give a more restrained sherry influence than a first-fill cask would, but enough to draw out dried fruits, nuts and a gentle spiced warmth in the whisky.

The distillery sits at the foot of Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest mountain, and is today owned by the Japanese Nikka group, meaning much of the malt ends up in Japanese blends rather than being sold as single malt. That makes independent bottlings like this one a rare chance to taste Ben Nevis in its purest form.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Stewed fruits and roasted mixed nuts meet a touch of orange zest, while a faint smoky note lingers in the background – typical of the distillery without ever taking over.

    Palate

Red apples and caramel unfold alongside sandalwood, with a light oily texture binding fruit and spice together in a way that feels entirely natural.

    Finish

The finish is dry and spiced, with a lingering hint of dark raisins and a faint smokiness that stays long after the last sip.
