Where the Lour Burn meets the River Spey, at the heart of Speyside's most classic whisky landscape, Aberlour has been distilling malt since 1879.

    Expert description

Aberlour 18 Year Old Double Cask Matured Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Aberlour is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks and oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bottled at 43%. The distillery was founded in 1879 by James Fleming at the confluence of the Lour Burn and the River Spey, a location that gave the distillery both its name — 'mouth of the chattering burn' — and the soft, iron-free spring water still used in production today. Aberlour has been owned for decades by Chivas Brothers, part of the French drinks group Pernod Ricard, and is at the same time France's best-selling single malt whisky, a result of the distillery's long-standing ties to the French market. The 18 Year Old undergoes double maturation: the whisky first matures in ex-bourbon casks before a significant portion is transferred to oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, giving it its characteristic combination of soft sweetness and deep fruitiness.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose opens with raisins, orange peel and a soft sherry sweetness, backed by dark chocolate and a hint of oak spice.

    Palate

The palate offers dried fruit, walnuts and a smooth sweetness, with layers of cinnamon and an undertone of apple pie.

    Finish

The finish is long and warming, with sherry, brown sugar and a closing hint of smoke.
