Glen Scotia Campbeltown Festival 2026 is a Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill ex-bourbon casks with a six-month finishing period in 1st fill Ruby Port casks, bottled at cask strength 53.9%.

The whisky is seven years old and built on the distillery medium-peated spirit, which master blender Ashley Smith only distils a few weeks a year. The first seven years were spent in 1st fill ex-bourbon casks, where the coastal style was allowed to unfold, and then came the six months in Ruby Port. That finish is what draws thick, preserved red fruit in and lays it as a sweet contrast over the smoke. The whisky is non-chill filtered and carries natural colour.

Ruby Port is a deliberate counterpoint to tawny. Where tawny is oxidative and nutty, ruby is young, fresh and berry-sweet, and it is exactly that fresh sweetness that can hold its ground against peat smoke. On a seven year old spirit eighteen months of port would have been too much — six months hits the point where the two sides can still be told apart.

Tasting notes

Nose

Sweet peat and sea salt, quickly giving way to ripe red cherry and soft vanilla fudge. A touch of cream and red berries settles on top, like raspberries stirred into cream.

Palate

Juicy mandarin meets thick jam of blackcurrant and red berries. Underneath it all lie layers of smoky embers, earthy and warm, and a light coastal saltiness that keeps the sweetness in check.

Finish

Long and warming with cinnamon and clove, a soft salted note and peat smoke that hangs on well after the last sip.

Did you know?

In 1930 one of the distillery former owners, Duncan MacCallum, threw himself into Campbeltown Loch after years of financial trouble. Locals still say his spirit walks the buildings at Glen Scotia.

Who is Ashley Smith?

Master blender at Glen Scotia. She handles cask selection and decides when the distillery peated spirit is run, which only happens a few weeks a year. The festival bottlings are among the releases where her choices are most visible.

Why Ruby Port rather than tawny?

Because ruby is young and berry-sweet, where tawny is oxidative and nutty. On a seven year old peated spirit you need fresh fruit sweetness to meet the smoke — a tawny would have pulled the whisky towards the dry and nutty and made it more closed.

Is seven years young for a festival bottling?

Yes, but deliberately. Young peated spirit carries more direct smoke and more edge, and that is exactly the energy festival bottles tend to go for. The cask strength of 53.9% means the whisky still has enough weight to carry the port cask.

How heavy is the smoke?

Should I add water?

Only a little, if at all. At 53.9% the balance between smoke and port fruit is already good, and too much water separates the two. A single drop can open the cherry, but do not go further than that.

What sets it apart from the 2025 festival edition?

The cask and the age. The 2025 release was nine years old and had five months in Spanish Ribera del Duero red wine casks, which gave dark berries and dry tannins. The 2026 is seven years old and port-finished, and is therefore sweeter and more direct in the fruit.

How should it be served?

Neat, in a tulip-shaped glass, at room temperature. Give it ten minutes — the smoke and port fruit only settle after a little air. It works well late in the evening or alongside dark chocolate.
