The Antiquary 15 Year Old Claret Cask is a blended Scotch whisky matured for at least 15 years and finished in Claret Casks, casks that previously held Bordeaux red wine, before bottling at 40% ABV.

The blend follows The Antiquary's classic style of Highland and Speyside malt whisky married with Lowland grain whisky, and it is exactly this balance between malt and grain that lets the Claret casks leave such a clear mark.

The Antiquary brand traces back to Victorian Edinburgh, where the Hardie brothers registered the name in 1888 after Sir Walter Scott's novel of the same title, and the brand now belongs to Tomatin Distillery Co.

Rossville Union is named after the Rossville Distillery, founded in 1847 by George Ross in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, during rye's golden age. A blended malt consists purely of malt whisky from several distilleries, meaning no grain whisky at all. Glencoe is built on malt from the Ben Nevis distillery at the foot of the highest mountain in Scotland and is bottled with ten years as the guaranteed minimum age.

The 46 % and the absence of chill filtration are chosen to keep the oils in the whisky. That gives a thicker texture and a more complex nose than an equivalent blended malt at 40 % would carry, and it is one reason the bottling has stayed in the range.

Dumbarton 23 Years Old Dram Mor is a Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in a refill bourbon barrel and bottled at cask strength 57.1%.

Dumbarton on the river Clyde closed in 2002 and was later demolished. The distillery supplied grain whisky to some of the largest blends in Scotland, and only rarely did any of it appear in its own right. With every year that passes, the remaining casks grow fewer.

Dram Mor selected cask number 211885, a refill bourbon barrel that still stood at 57.1% after twenty-three years. The whisky is bottled without chill filtration and without added colour, and the cask gave 182 bottles. The name Dram Mor means big dram in Gaelic.

Dràm Mòr is a Scottish independent bottler that specializes in tracking down single casks with character rather than chasing a uniform house style. Eight years might not sound like much in whisky terms, but in a first-fill cask the wood works fast. The result is a dram that tastes older than its age – dark, spicy and with a richness usually associated with far more mature releases.

Millstone 7 Year Old Dram Mor Dutch Single Malt Whisky is an independent bottling of Zuidam's whisky, matured for at least 7 years, bottled at 53.1%. Millstone is the Dutch whisky series from Zuidam Distillers, founded in 1975 by Fred van Zuidam in the border town of Baarle-Nassau. After decades producing genever and liqueurs, the distillery made its first experimental whisky barrels in 1996, and in 2007 Millstone launched as the Netherlands' first single malt whisky. The distillery follows a 'farm to glass' principle, growing most of its own grain, and the name Millstone honours the Dutch tradition of grinding grain in windmills.

Highland Park 18 Year Old Dràm Mòr Single Malt Scotch Whisky 57.1% is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky drawn from one hogshead and bottled without chill filtration at cask strength of 57.1%.

Dràm Mòr is a small Scottish bottling house in Dumbarton, started in 2019 by husband and wife Kenny and Viktorija Macdonald. They began as an export agency for Scotch before buying casks of their own, and the company now ships its bottlings to 14 countries. Every cask is tasted and picked individually, and everything goes out at full strength with natural colour.

The spirit went into wood in 2006 and was bottled in 2024 after 18 years in hogshead no. 3535. A hogshead holds roughly 250 litres and is built from the staves of American bourbon barrels, rebuilt with an extra stave and fresh ends. It is larger than the barrel it came from, so the ratio of liquid to wood is lower. Maturation runs slower, and the distillery character stays in place instead of being overrun by oak. The cask gave 292 bottles.

Cask strength here means no water was added after maturation. The 57.1% carries the oils and heavy aroma compounds that dilution would otherwise push into the background, and without chill filtration the texture stays thick and faintly waxy. In return the whisky wants a few minutes in the glass before it opens up.

Tasting notes

Nose

Salt seaweed and dry straw meet honey and dried heather. Behind them sits a thin veil of smoke, closer to cool ash than open fire, and a twist of lemon peel.

Palate

Powerful and oily. Citrus and lemon sorbet cut through first, then roasted pears and a clear note of white pepper. The smoke settles lightly on top and keeps the sweetness in check.

Finish

Long and warm. The pepper hangs on, and at the end Highland Park's peat unfolds and rounds everything off with a dry, earthy tone.

Madeira is the only wine in the world that improves by being heated. The wine matures at around fifty degrees for months on end, and the casks carry that treatment with them: a cooked, nutty sweetness you will not find in other wine casks.

Ardnamurchan Madeira Cask Release AD is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in madeira casks and bottled at 52%. It combines the distillery’s craft approach and sustainable production with the distinctive influence of the madeira wood.

Madeira differs from other fortified wines in undergoing a heat treatment during maturation, where the wine is held warm for a long period. That gives a caramelised, nutty character not found in sherry or port, and the casks carry it on to the whisky.

At 52% there is body enough to carry both the madeira sweetness and Ardnamurchan’s own maritime character. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

Nose

Ripe stone fruit, candied orange peel and honey open the nose, joined by a light touch of sea breeze and spice. A nutty, almost caramelised note sits beneath it all, the fingerprint of the madeira cask.

The Bholsa caves sit in the cliffs not far from the distillery. You can walk into them, and most people remember the trip. Ardnahoe named a whisky after them, and it is as dark and as insistent as the name suggests.

The Expert's Description

Ardnahoe Bholsa is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured mainly in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 50%. It is neither chill filtered nor coloured, which preserves its natural depth.

Ardnahoe opened in October 2018 as Islay’s ninth distillery, built by the independent bottler Hunter Laing. It stands out technically: it is the only distillery on Islay using worm tubs to cool the spirit, and its lyne arms are the longest in Scotland at 7.5 metres. Both choices give a fuller, oilier spirit.

The Oloroso casks lay dark fruit and nuts beneath the Islay peat smoke, and at 50% there is body enough to carry both without either taking over.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Intense red fruit first, then roasted walnuts and fresh orange peel. Beneath sits an elegant peat smoke, clear without being sharp.

Driftless Glen Distillery was founded in 2012 in Baraboo, Wisconsin, by Brian and Reneé Bemis, who scoured the country for a place with the right grain and water for bourbon and rye — and found it in the Driftless Area, a part of Wisconsin the glaciers of the last ice age bypassed. The distillery is housed in a restored 1800s building on the Baraboo River, near Circus World, and produces its whiskey grain-to-glass from local grain and water.

Nose

The nose is intense with rye, caramel and spiced oak.

Palate

The palate is powerful and concentrated with rye, sweetness and pronounced oak spice.

Finish

The finish is long, warm and spicy.
