  • GlenAllachie 2012/2023 Cuvée Cask Finish 10 Year
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0401

The word cuvée comes straight from the French wine cellar, where it describes a very specific blend of grapes from a given harvest - the winemaker's own signature mix. When GlenAllachie borrows the same term for a cask, it is because this whisky rested in casks that previously held exactly that kind of French cuvée wine. It leaves a finishing touch that is more wine-driven and berry-fruited than most other finishes in the range.

    Expert's Description

GlenAllachie's 2012/2023 Cuvée Cask Finish is a 10 Year Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in French cuvée casks and bottled at 48% ABV.

The whisky was distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2023, spending its final years in casks that once held a French cuvée - a wine blended from several grape varieties, usually built for structure and fruit rather than one single defining character. That leaves the whisky with a rounded, gently tart fruitiness that sits beautifully on top of the honeyed sweetness built up during GlenAllachie's long core maturation.

As one of the distillery's more limited vintage releases, this bottling stands as one of the more experimental cask choices, where Billy Walker's team let the wine world leave its mark on a classic Speyside profile.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark forest berries and a trace of red wine acidity meet soft honey and a light creamy vanilla.

    Palate

Juicy blackcurrant and cherry unfold alongside brown sugar and a fine, wine-driven tartness that keeps everything fresh.

    Finish

Medium in length, closing with a last note of dried fruit and a light tannic grip from the wine cask.

    Did You Know?

The term cuvée is used in the French wine world to describe a specific blend of grape varieties or pressings from a given vintage - the winemaker's own composition rather than the name of a particular region or grape. When such a cask is later filled with whisky, the wood passes on not just colour but also part of the structure and acidity the winemaker originally built into that blend.

  • Glenglassaugh 12 year bottle in pale glass with a coastal motif on the label
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0346

The distillery sits so close to the North Sea that the warehouses take salt air in through the walls. You can taste it, and that is the whole point of this bottling.

    The expert's description

Glenglassaugh 12 Year is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon, sherry and red wine casks and bottled at 45%.

The cask recipe is what sets it apart from the rest of the range. The bourbon casks give vanilla and light fruit, the sherry adds nuts and dried fruit, and the red wine casks lay in a berry note you rarely meet in a permanent twelve year old.

The whisky became the flagship when Glenglassaugh rebuilt its entire core range in the summer of 2023. It was put together by master blender Rachel Barrie and matured in the distillery coastal warehouses looking out over Sandend Bay.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe apricot and fig with toasted vanilla. A soft, warm fruitiness with a hint of salt air behind it.

    Palate

Candied nuts, dates and sweet fig with cherry and cream. The 45% gives it some weight without making it heavy.

    Finish

Medium length with nuts, cocoa and a lightly salted caramel at the close.

  • Bottle of The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Batch 2 from Douglas Laing in Campbeltown
    Item no.: 2222783333-9996321

Three distilleries, one region, and a shared handshake from Douglas Laing - The Gauldrons gathers the best of Campbeltown into a single bottle, named after the rugged terrain surrounding the town.

    Expert Description

The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Batch 2 is a Campbeltown Blended Malt Scotch Whisky composed of single malt from the region's distilleries, matured in sherry casks and bottled at 50%.

The range is part of Douglas Laing's newer output, gathering malt from Campbeltown's three remaining distilleries into a shared blend. Batch 2 stands out from the first release with a higher strength, lifting both the smoke and the sherry spice a notch further. The sherry casks bring a spiced, rounded character, kept in check by the region's typical salty, lightly smoky backbone.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Raisin-sweet sherry meets toasted nuts and a whisper of smoke, with a hint of salted caramel behind it.

    Palate

Spiced and round with dark chocolate, dried fruit and a clear but balanced smoke note.

    Finish

Warm and lightly salty, the sherry sweetness fading into a dry, smoky close.

  • Benrinnes 2011 Wilson Morgan 11 year old Speyside Single Malt Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0201

Nine cask numbers on one label. Wilson & Morgan gathered a small handful of casks from the same vintage and gave them a shared finish in Pedro Ximénez — an Italian exercise in making single casks play together.

    The expert's description

Benrinnes 2011/2022 Wilson & Morgan 11 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in Pedro Ximénez casks and bottled at 46 %.

Cask no. 301607, 301611, 301614 and 301617 to 301623 were filled in 2011 and emptied in 2022 for the Barrel Selection range. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

Where the house's 14 year old spent 36 months alone in one PX cask, this one is built more broadly: several casks vatted together and a shorter, more restrained sherry finish. The result is easier to approach while still carrying Rossi's handwriting.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisin, toasted almond and a touch of orange marmalade. Fresh barley and a lightly sweet grain note sit under the sherry.

    Palate

Soft and round with dates, brown sugar and cinnamon. The 46 % keeps it light, and the sherry lies as a layer on top of the spirit rather than swallowing it.

    Finish

Medium long with dried fruit, a hint of cocoa and a dry spiced close.

  • The Observatory 20 Years Signature Series Single Grain
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0184

A lighthouse cuts through fog and darkness, night after night, year after year. The Observatory is named for Scotland's many coastal lighthouses and celebrates that same patient endurance in its own long maturation.

    Expert description

The Observatory 20 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky bottled at 40% ABV from the Signature Series, distilled at the Macduff distillery, also known for producing the Single Malt whisky Glen Deveron.

The lighthouse on the box is the series' recurring symbol, referencing the many lighthouses that line Scotland's coastline and have guided sailors safely to harbour for centuries. The series was created by master blender Stephanie Macleod, one of the industry's few female master blenders.

The whisky has matured for 20 years in a combination of used sherry casks and Virgin Oak, a pairing that gives this grain whisky an unusual depth and complexity more often associated with single malt than single grain.

The result is an unusually soft mouthfeel with pronounced sherry sweetness, vanilla and dark chocolate, setting it apart from the lighter, more neutral style many associate with grain whisky.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet sherry and toasted vanilla meet fresh summer berries and a touch of citrus.

    Palate

Mouth-filling and soft, with ripe grapes, vanilla and cane sugar sweetness.

    Finish

Warm and dry, with a lightly spiced close.

    Investment potential

A 20-year-old Single Grain from a named source distillery is relatively rare on the market, since most grain whiskies are bottled far younger, giving The Observatory an interesting position for collectors with an interest in the grain category.

    Did you know?

Single Grain whisky differs from Single Malt in that it is distilled from grains other than exclusively malted barley, often wheat or corn, typically on a continuous column still rather than traditional pot stills, giving a lighter, more neutral base character that here has been transformed by 20 years of cask maturation.

  • GlenAllachie 8 Year Scottish Virgin Oak Finish
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0175

While sherry and bourbon casks dominate most of the whisky world, GlenAllachie looked to the forest right outside its own door. This 8 year old expression is finished in virgin Scottish oak - a wood almost never used for whisky, simply because it rarely grows tall and straight enough for cask making. The result is a local, almost homegrown woodland character you will not find elsewhere in the range.

    Expert's Description

GlenAllachie's 8 Year Scottish Virgin Oak is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in virgin Scottish oak casks and bottled at 48% ABV.

Scottish oak grows more slowly and often more gnarled than its American or European relatives, and the best trunks are traditionally claimed by furniture makers, shipbuilders and timber framing rather than coopers. Finding enough quality wood for full casks is therefore rare, making this one of the few whiskies matured in homegrown Scottish virgin timber.

The flavour reflects the denser, more tannic wood - a touch tighter and earthier than the other virgin oak variants in the series, while still carrying the signature GlenAllachie sweetness built up over long ageing.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh forest floor, lightly smoked oak and a trace of hay meet a gentle honeyed sweetness underneath.

    Palate

Spiced pepper and dried herbs mix with brown sugar and a faintly nutty undertone from the dense, local wood.

    Finish

Medium in length, dry and slightly firm, closing with a last note of oak tannin and a touch of sweetness.

    Did You Know?

Scottish oak was historically rarely used for cask making, because the best trunks were claimed for centuries by shipbuilders and later by railway sleepers and furniture joiners. The whisky industry has therefore traditionally imported its oak from America and Spain, which makes GlenAllachie's use of homegrown Scottish virgin oak one of the most unusual cask choices in all of Speyside.

  • GlenAllachie 7 Year Hungarian Virgin Oak Finish
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0173

Hungarian oak is rarely seen in Scotch whisky, which is exactly why it is interesting that GlenAllachie dares to experiment with it. The result is a 7 year old sitting somewhere between spice and sweetness — a balance Hungarian oak is known for delivering.

    Expert's Description

GlenAllachie 7 Year Hungarian Virgin Oak Finish is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky at 48%, where the finishing period has taken place in Hungarian Virgin Oak casks — virgin Hungarian oak casks that have not previously held spirit.

Hungarian oak is often considered a middle ground between American and French oak: known for a strong spice and vanilla character while retaining a certain finesse. That makes it an interesting choice for a distillery already known for experimenting broadly with cask types in its Virgin Oak series.

The whisky is part of an ongoing series in which GlenAllachie tests how different national oak traditions affect the same young, robust spirit.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Spiced vanilla and a light sweetness, supported by a distinct oak note from the Hungarian wood.

    Palate

Vanilla and warm spices fill the mouth, while the spirit's fruity character shines through beneath the surface.

    Finish

Spiced and dry, with a lingering oak note.

    Specifications

Name: GlenAllachie 7 Year Hungarian Virgin Oak Finish
    Distillery: GlenAllachie
    Region/Country: Speyside, Scotland

Cask type: Hungarian Virgin Oak Finish
    Non-chill filtered: Yes
    Natural colour: Yes

    Flavour Profile

Vanilla · Spiced · Oak · Light Sweetness

    Investment Potential

As part of the Virgin Oak series' more unconventional cask choices, this 7 year old appeals to collectors interested in experiments with rare oak types. Investment potential is rated medium, driven by the limited use of Hungarian oak in Scotch whisky production.

    Did You Know?

Hungarian oak is traditionally used more in wine production than in whisky maturation, and its dense wood structure means it releases aroma more slowly than American oak, which can give a more balanced spice profile over time.

    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0157

Four casks, the same day at the distillery, the same treatment. Signatory shaved off the old layer of wood and toasted the casks again — and the whisky has had eleven years to get used to it.

Please note: There is wear and rust on the cap.

    Expert description

Blair Athol 2011/2023 Signatory Vintage 11 Years is a Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky from four Dechar/Rechar Hogsheads, bottled at 46% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The whisky was distilled on 30 September 2011 and bottled in January 2023. Casks #306899, #306905, #306911 and #306913 all went through the same treatment, where the innermost layer of wood is planed away and the cask charred anew. The method recharges a used cask and returns vanilla, caramel and pale spice.

Blair Athol's spirit is heavy and malty, and the re-charred casks add sweetness without laying sherry or wine over it. The result is a clean reading of the distillery's own style.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and baked apple with malted grain, cinnamon and a lightly toasted note.

    Palate

Malt and caramel with pale oak, honey and a stroke of white pepper. The texture is full for 46%.

    Expert description

The whiskey is named after Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a rye farmer and whiskey pioneer who in 1796 changed his recipe to include a higher proportion of rye than typical for the time, creating the 'high-rye bourbon' category. Hayden also helped found Bardstown, Kentucky, in 1785, and his grandson later named his own brand Old Grand-Dad in his honour.

  • Girvan Murray McDavid Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky bottle from a PX cask
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0094

Grain whisky is rarely treated as something that deserves a fine cask. Murray McDavid did the opposite and put an eleven year old Girvan into a Ximenez-Spinola PX cask, and suddenly the cereal is no longer the dull part of the equation.

    The expert description

Girvan 2011/2022 Murray McDavid 11 Years Old is a Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky finished in a Ximenez-Spinola PX cask and bottled at 46%.

Girvan was built in 1963 by William Grant & Sons on the Ayrshire coast and is today one of the largest grain distilleries in Scotland. This release was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2022 by Murray McDavid, who rank among the bottlers working most deliberately with wood.

The PX cask is the decisive part. Pedro Ximenez is the sweetest of the sherry styles, almost syrupy, and on a soft grain whisky it lays down a layer of dark fruit that a malt would have had to supply itself. The release yielded 1228 bottles, bottled without chill filtration and without colouring.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisin and dark syrup first, then vanilla and coconut from the grain character, and a note of fig behind.

    Palate

Soft and oily with dates, muscovado and dark chocolate. The cereal sweetness sits underneath and keeps it from turning heavy.

    Finish

Medium and sweet with dried fruit, a touch of oak and a light spiced warmth.

  • 1770 Glasgow The Original bottle, Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Glasgow Distillery
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0023

For more than a century nobody distilled malt whisky inside Glasgow. The city had shipyards, cranes and a proud industrial past, but no copper stills. This bottle is the one that broke the silence, and it comes from an industrial estate rather than a glen.

    The Expert's Description

1770 Glasgow The Original is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill ex-bourbon and Virgin Oak casks and bottled at 46%. It is the distillery flagship and carries the subtitle Fresh & Fruity, the bottle everything else in the range is measured against.

The malt is unpeated and the spirit is distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills after a fermentation of more than 72 hours. That long fermentation is no accident: it develops fruity esters, and those are what you meet as pear and apple in the glass. First fill bourbon casks add vanilla and coconut, while a smaller proportion of Virgin Oak lays in spice and structure.

The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured. The water comes from Loch Katrine, and there is no age statement, as the distillery bottles when the casks say so.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh pear, green apple and a touch of melon. Vanilla follows along with toasted coconut and a soft cereal sweetness, close to white bread straight from the oven. Clean and inviting, with no hard edges.

    Palate

Soft and lightly creamy, with baked apple and custard first. Mid-palate the new oak tightens things with cinnamon, nutmeg and a drier wood note. The 46% gives enough body that the whisky handles a few drops of water without turning watery.

    Finish

Medium length. Vanilla and malt linger, and a dry, lightly spiced oak note arrives at the end.

    Did You Know?

The distillery sits in Hillington, an industrial area in the west of Glasgow, between warehouses and businesses. There are no whitewashed walls, no pagoda roof and no burn running past. That was a deliberate decision: the whisky was to be made in the city, not in a postcard version of Scotland.

A third of the production year goes to this style. It is not a side project or a trial, it is a deliberate decision to use a technique almost every other Scottish malt distillery has put down.

    The Expert's Description

1770 Glasgow Triple Distilled is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill and refill ex-bourbon casks plus Virgin Oak and bottled at 46%. The distillery calls it Smooth & Vibrant and runs triple distillation for a third of the year.

The malt is Concerto, a barley variety widely used in Scottish distilling, and the water comes from Loch Katrine. The third distillation removes the heavier oily compounds so that only the lightest and purest part of the spirit is collected. Most of the maturation happens in bourbon casks, while a smaller share, around five to eight per cent, comes from new American white oak barrels supplied by Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky.

The result is a whisky with less fat and more clarity. Neither chill filtration nor colouring is involved, and there is no age statement.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Shortbread and light honey first, then double cream and a hint of lemon peel. There is a fine bakery quality to it, close to freshly baked biscuits, and a warm drier wood note sits at the back.

    Palate

Round and lightly creamy, with honey, vanilla and juicy apple. The body is lighter than in a double distilled malt but it is not thin, and a warm spicy wood edge arrives mid-palate. Clean and well balanced the whole way.

    Finish

Medium and soft. Honey and malt linger, and a warm oak spice note closes things quietly.

    Did You Know?

The new oak barrels for this whisky come from Kelvin Cooperage in Louisville, Kentucky, a cooperage originally founded in Glasgow in 1963 that later moved to the United States. The casks therefore travel from Kentucky back to the city where the business began. It is a coincidence, but it makes a good story.

Smoke from the Lowlands is a rarity. For decades the region stood for the light and floral while peat was left to the islands. Glasgow Distillery decided to do it anyway, and laid the smoke down in Pedro Ximénez casks where it found sweetness to lean against.

    The Expert's Description

1770 Glasgow Peated is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in Virgin Oak and PX Sherry casks and bottled at 46%. The distillery calls it Rich & Smoky, and it is their peated core expression, made from peated malt during part of the production year.

The cask choice is what makes it. Virgin Oak gives spice, cinnamon and a drier wood edge, while the PX Sherry casks lay in a thick, almost syrupy sweetness: raisins, dates and dark sugar. The smoke sits between the two and comes out rounder for the company than it would have on neutral wood.

The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured, and bottling at 46% was chosen to keep the body intact. The water comes from Loch Katrine and fermentation runs beyond 72 hours.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sweet smoke first, closer to singed raisins than a bonfire. Behind it come dates, dark sugar and a note of burnt orange. There is a layer of cinnamon and dried ginger from the new oak as well.

    Palate

Full and sweet. Raisins and molasses open, then the smoke steps in as a dry earthy floor. The spices arrive last: cinnamon, clove, a touch of chilli. The texture is thick and slightly clinging, which is the PX cask signature.

    Finish

Long. Smoke and dark sweetness go hand in hand, and a drier, almost coffee-like bitterness lingers at the end.

    Did You Know?

Glasgow Distillery launched Makar Gin long before the first whisky was ready. It is a common strategy at new distilleries: the gin can be sold immediately and pays the bills while the whisky sits maturing for years. Without the gin, 1770 would probably have had a harder time reaching 2018.
