Some casks only add colour. Others add character. Penderyn Portwood belongs firmly to the second group — a whisky that has spent its time resting in old port casks until it tastes of something deeper than where it started.

    Expert description

Penderyn Portwood is a Single Malt Welsh Whisky matured in port casks and bottled at 46%. It belongs to Penderyn's Gold range, which received a new bottle and label design in 2021, and it's long been a favourite among French drinkers, where the port-cask style sits naturally alongside the country's own wine culture.

The casks give the whisky its weight: dried fruit, dark chocolate and toasted oak on the nose, and a creamy, honeyed palate that builds on Penderyn's clean, light spirit from the single Faraday still. Portwood has picked up gold at the World Whisky Masters on several occasions and gold at the IWSC, which says something about how well the spirit and the wood work together here.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers dried fruit, dark chocolate and cranberry, tied together by a toasted, almost crisp oak note.

    Palate

The palate is creamy and round, with honey and spice, and the port casks come through clearly without ever overpowering the spirit.

    Finish

The finish lands softly on oak and honey and lingers, warmer than sweet.

Frequently asked questions about Penderyn Portwood New Version Single Malt Welsh Whisky 70 CL 46%

    What makes Penderyn Portwood special?

The port casks carry the whisky: they bring a weight of dried fruit, dark chocolate and honey that sets it apart from lighter Penderyn expressions like Myth or Legend.

Is Penderyn Portwood sweet or dry?

It leans sweet, with honey and creamy spice, but finishes drier on oak, so it never feels cloying.

What food pairs well with Penderyn Portwood?

Dark chocolate, blue cheese or a classic crème brûlée all echo the whisky's own honey and toasted oak notes.

Should Penderyn Portwood be served with ice?

That's a matter of taste, but serving it neat keeps the full richness of the port casks intact. A drop of water is a gentler way to open it up than ice.

    Is Penderyn Portwood worth it?

Yes — the bottle has picked up repeated international gold medals, including at the World Whisky Masters and the IWSC, which reflects a high standard in both the spirit and the cask choice.

What's the difference between Penderyn Portwood and Penderyn Myth?

Myth is light and citrus-driven from ex-bourbon and oak casks, while Portwood is fuller and sweeter thanks to its port-cask maturation and a higher strength of 46%.
