Nine cask numbers on one label. Wilson & Morgan gathered a small handful of casks from the same vintage and gave them a shared finish in Pedro Ximénez — an Italian exercise in making single casks play together.

    The expert's description

Benrinnes 2011/2022 Wilson & Morgan 11 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in Pedro Ximénez casks and bottled at 46 %.

Cask no. 301607, 301611, 301614 and 301617 to 301623 were filled in 2011 and emptied in 2022 for the Barrel Selection range. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

Where the house's 14 year old spent 36 months alone in one PX cask, this one is built more broadly: several casks vatted together and a shorter, more restrained sherry finish. The result is easier to approach while still carrying Rossi's handwriting.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisin, toasted almond and a touch of orange marmalade. Fresh barley and a lightly sweet grain note sit under the sherry.

    Palate

Soft and round with dates, brown sugar and cinnamon. The 46 % keeps it light, and the sherry lies as a layer on top of the spirit rather than swallowing it.

    Finish

Medium long with dried fruit, a hint of cocoa and a dry spiced close.

Frequently asked questions about Benrinnes 2011/2022 Wilson & Morgan 11 years old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky 70 cl 46%

Why are there so many cask numbers?

Because the release is vatted from several casks of the same vintage and distillery. That gives a larger outturn and a more consistent whisky than a single cask, without losing traceability — every cask number is still printed on the label.

    What is a PX finish?

A final period in casks that previously held Pedro Ximénez sherry. It adds raisin, dates and sweetness on top of the whisky's original character, without the whisky having spent its whole life in sherry wood.

How does it differ from the 14 year old from the same house?

The 14 year old is cask strength and spent three years alone in one first fill PX cask — it is dark, heavy and intense. This one is 46 %, vatted from several casks and far more balanced. Same bottler, two very different expressions.

Is it a good introduction to Italian bottlers?

Yes. Wilson & Morgan are among the most distinctive of them, and this release shows the house style without requiring you to be comfortable with cask strength. To look more broadly, there are further options among Single Malt Whisky.

    Does it need water?

Not necessarily. At 46 % it is already open. A single drop can draw out a little more fruit, but it does not need it.

What does it suit in winter?

It is good after a heavy meal — dates and brown sugar in the whisky suit roasted nuts, caramelised apples or a dark chocolate dessert.
