54-80 € Rum

  • Bottle of A. Michler Ron Espero Dos Continentes rum
    Item no.: 059763-615-99

Three cultures, three cask types, one glass - Dos Continentes travels from the Caribbean through Spain to France before landing in the bottle.

    Expert description

    A. Michler Ron Espero Dos Continentes is a Premium Caribbean Spirit from the Dominican Republic, bottled at 40%.

Dos Continentes ("Two Continents") undergoes a triple maturation process. The rum first rests for 6 years at its place of origin in an ex-bourbon cask, before being moved to a former sherry cask and then to a former banyuls cask from southern France for a further 4 years of solera ageing. This journey through three cask types and three cultures - Caribbean, Spanish and French - creates a fusion that, according to A. Michler, brings harmony between flavour and aroma.

The rum is blended and matured from carefully hand-selected Barbados rum. Behind the A. Michler brand is a rum house with roots stretching back to the historic Albert Michler distillery, today part of the wider Caribbean rum scene.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sherry sweetness and dark berries from the banyuls cask, over a base of Caribbean caramel.

    Palate

Full and complex, with layers of dried fruit, nuts and wine-like sweetness.

  • Slim bottle with dark label and gold lettering, Alta Gama Demi-sec
    Item no.: 22227865395-8178

Demi-Sec is the sweetest and final stop in the Alta Gama series, which otherwise consists of the exact same rum from bottle to bottle.

    Expert description

Alta Gama Demi-Sec is a Guyana Spirit Drink matured in oak casks and bottled at 41%.

The rum is a blend from three historic distilleries in Guyana: Port Mourant with its double wooden pot still, Enmore with its wooden coffey still, and Uitvlugt with its four-column French Savalle still, matured between 5 and 15 years in ex-bourbon casks of American oak. The Demi-Sec expression carries 35 grams of added sugar per litre, the highest sweetness in the series and well above the EU's 20 gram per litre limit for products labelled as rum, meaning the product must legally be described as Spirit Drink rather than Rum. The rum is distributed in Denmark by CRT Spirits.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Burnt Demerara sugar and liquorice in a noticeably sweeter, more syrupy expression than the rest of the series, with orange peel and a touch of oak.

    Palate

Full-bodied and markedly sweet with burnt sugar, caramel and a soft, round body.

    Finish

Long, sweet and gentle, where the burnt sugar and discreet spice linger longest of the whole series.

    Item no.: 22227865449-311

Half new, half charred Limousin oak. Clément XO is the expression where the house goes furthest with its cask selection, and where the result moves far from the green, young agricole style.

    Expert Description

Clément Rhum Vieux Agricole XO is a Martinique Rhum Agricole aged at least six years in French Limousin oak casks and bottled at 42%.

The rum is distilled from fresh cane juice at Habitation Clément in Le François and then aged in a combination of casks, half of which are brand new and the other half heavily charred on the inside. This two-part cask strategy is at the heart of XO's character, where the new casks add spice and vanilla sweetness while the charred casks provide a deeper, smoky wood structure.

The combination of the two cask types over at least six years produces a rum markedly more complex than the house's younger VSOP, with a richness that approaches cognac in its elegance.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe apples and true cinnamon, accompanied by a discreet smoky note of charred wood, complemented by honeysuckle, candied orange peel and vanilla with hints of clove, black tea, nuts and dark chocolate.

    Palate

Cannonball is the name of this series from the French bottling house, and with a 12-month finish in peated Islay Whisky casks, edition number 8 fully lives up to the name's power.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes Boulet de Canon No. 8 Spiced Panama Rom is a Panama & Nicaragua Rum, a blend mostly 3-5 years old with a touch of 8-year-old rum, bottled at 46%.

The Boulet de Canon series from French bottler Compagnie des Indes is characterised by whisky-cask finishing, and number 8 in the line spends 12 months in casks that previously held peated Islay Whisky. This gives this South American rum an unusual smoky, vegetal character, more reminiscent of an autumn walk through the forest than a classic Caribbean rum.

The result is a full-bodied, complex rum where smoke and vegetal notes meet classic rum sweetness in an unusual combination.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Some rums are made to resemble something familiar. Oktoberum is made to surprise, a Jamaican rum sent through three completely unexpected cask types.

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Oktoberum is a Blended Rum from Jamaica, at least 5 years old and bottled at 46%.

The rum is assembled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes from several Jamaican rums, all at least 5 years old. What sets Oktoberum apart is the extra maturation the blend undergoes: first five years in casks that previously held Macvin and Vin Jaune, then further maturation in whisky casks, and finally a period in beer casks. The three shifting cask types give the rum a golden, slightly hazy appearance and a character that is harder to pin down than most standard expressions from the island.

    Tasting notes

Not a single rum, but a collection of the most characterful reserves from an entire family's history - chosen by the people who know the casks best.

    Expert Description

Diplomático Seleccion de Familia is a Rum from Venezuela, composed of selected family reserves and bottled at 43%.

The rum is a blend of some of the most characterful rum reserves from Diplomático's history, carefully selected together with the distillery's Maestros Roneros - the masters with final responsibility for balancing the distillery's style. The composition expresses the passion and craftsmanship behind Diplomático's tradition of rum production, resulting in a complex, full-bodied rum with notes of vanilla, caramel and red fruit.

Diplomático is built on the grounds of an old sugar refinery in the town of La Miel and is today one of Venezuela's most internationally acclaimed rum brands.

  • Black bottle with golden label and Filipino pattern from Don Papa
    Item no.: 22227865378-9003

Toasted coconut, mango and a touch of chili from Negros – Don Papa's tribute to the island the whole brand is rooted in.

    Expert description

Don Papa Alon Single Island is a Philippine Spirit Drink made exclusively from sugarcane and molasses grown on Negros and bottled at 40%.

Alon is a limited edition release, flavoured with toasted coconut, jackfruit and warm spices, all inspired by Negros' nickname "Sugarlandia" – the island that has historically produced a large share of the Philippines' sugar. Because Alon uses ingredients from this one island only, it stands apart from Don Papa's broader, wider-sourced blends.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Tropical and aromatic with toasted coconut, tangy citrus, roasted pineapple, mango, lychee, papaya, jasmine and vanilla.

    Palate

Rich, unctuous and creamy with ripe fruit and an underlying spiciness.

    Finish

Dry and spicy, with a hint of chili and exotic spices lingering.

    Did you know?

Negros is nicknamed "Sugarlandia" because the island alone has historically accounted for around half of the entire Philippines' sugar production – and it is precisely here that both Don Papa and the Alon edition source all their raw material.
