There's something wonderfully unhinged about a German metal band picking out sherry casks with a team of Danish rum blenders. Somehow it works. This release sends Rammstein's tropical rum blend through Spanish sherry wood one more time, and the result lands darker and heavier than most of its siblings in the range.

    The Expert's Description

Rammstein Limited Edition Oloroso Cask Finish is a Blended Rum made from rum sourced in Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, finished in Ex-Oloroso casks and bottled at 46%. The base blend has spent up to 12 years in ex-bourbon casks before receiving an additional 32 months in casks that previously held Spanish Oloroso sherry - the same approach the band has used for the sibling releases finished in cognac, Sauternes, Limoux and port casks, just with a different cask and therefore a different direction in the glass.

The rum belongs to Rammstein's Limited Edition series, where the band works together with the Danish spirits house 1423 to select and mature rum released under the Rammstein name. The Jamaican, Guyanese and Trinidadian base blend runs through the whole series, but it's the final stretch in cask that gives each release its own character - here, it's the dried fruit and nutty edge of Oloroso sherry that leaves its mark.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers full aromas of dried fruit, roasted nuts and orange peel, spiced with warm notes leaning towards cinnamon and clove from the sherry casks.

    Palate

On the palate the rum is full-bodied and intense, with notes of raisins, dark chocolate, caramel and roasted nuts - a rich, sweet profile that never tips into cloying.

    Finish

The finish is long and warm, with a dry, faintly bitter edge of dark chocolate and oak that lingers well after the sweet raisin note has faded.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rammstein Limited Edition Oloroso Cask Finish

What makes Rammstein Limited Edition Oloroso Cask Finish different from the other releases in the series?

The base blend of rum from Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago is the same as in, for example, the Sauternes and Cognac editions, but here the rum has spent its final 32 months in Ex-Oloroso sherry casks instead. That brings more dried fruit and dark chocolate, and a heavier, sweeter profile than the lighter Sauternes edition.

How old is the rum in the bottle?

The rum in the blend has aged up to 12 years before receiving a further 32 months in the Oloroso sherry casks. Added together, the oldest part of the blend is edging close to 13 years in cask.

What does Rammstein Limited Edition Oloroso Cask Finish taste like?

It tastes rich and dark - of raisins, dark chocolate, caramel and roasted nuts, with a nose of dried fruit and orange peel. The sherry casks make it sweeter and heavier than most of the other Rammstein editions.

Should it be drunk neat, or does it work in cocktails?

It's built to be enjoyed neat or over ice - the 46% strength and the full sweetness from the Oloroso casks mean it easily stands on its own in the glass. If you do want it in a cocktail, it works best in simple builds where dark chocolate and dried fruit can carry the drink, rather than light highballs.

What glass and temperature suit it best?

Serve it at room temperature in a tulip-shaped rum glass or a whisky glass, so the dried fruit and spice aromas can gather. The bottle comes with two Rammstein tumblers, if you'd rather enjoy it the classic way with a single ice cube.

    Who is behind Rammstein Rum?

Rammstein Rum is a collaboration between the German rock band and the Danish spirits house 1423, with the band's own members involved in selecting the rum and casks for the series. That makes Rammstein one of the few bands to take real ownership of their own spirits brand, rather than simply putting their name and logo on a finished bottle.

Is Rammstein Limited Edition Oloroso Cask Finish a good gift?

Yes, especially for Rammstein fans or anyone who likes a full-bodied, sherry-driven rum. The two included tumblers make it easy to wrap as a complete gift, and the limited release gives it a bit of extra value as a collectible on top of the flavour itself.
