  • Discontinued Bunnahabhain Westering Home bottle at lower strength
    Item no.: 505956-807534-933

Another batch of the same discontinued label, this time bottled at 40% – the strength many whiskies carried before 40% became a minimum requirement rather than a standard.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old Old Version 1 is a Single Islay Malt Scotch Whisky from the 1980s, bottled at 40%.

Like the rest of the Westering Home series, this bottle dates from before Bunnahabhain settled its range around the 46.3% known today. At 40%, this is the mildest of the discontinued old version bottlings in this delivery.

It's a bottle for the collector who wants to line up several batches of the same historic label and taste the difference between them.

    Tasting Notes

Gentle sea air and a hint of peat, backed by oily malt.

A bottle with no box, but decades behind it – this 12 Years Old dates back to when Bunnahabhain still wore the Westering Home label.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old Old Version is a Single Islay Malt Scotch Whisky from the 1980s, bottled at 43%.

The whisky belongs to the same discontinued Westering Home series as the distillery's other old version bottlings, from a time when the standard strength sat at 43% rather than today's 46.3%. The bottle arrives without a box, which is typical for cellar finds of this age.

It's a rare chance to taste how Bunnahabhain sounded long before the distillery became a familiar name among independent bottlers worldwide.

    Item no.: 505956-098460-8

Before many of today's whisky lovers had even heard of Bunnahabhain, this was the label that graced the distillery's bottles around the world.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old Westering Home Old Version is a Single Islay Malt Scotch Whisky in a 100cl format, bottled at 43%.

From the mid-1980s onward, the Westering Home label – named after the lines from Islay's national song – was for a long time the only official Bunnahabhain release available outside the distillery itself. Back then the house style hadn't yet settled on the 46.3% known today, and this 12 Years Old is bottled at 43%, the standard of that period.

The bottle represents a bygone era of Bunnahabhain's history, when the distillery was far less known, and even a 12 Years Old core release was hard to come by outside Scotland.

A chessboard holds 32 pieces, and The Chess Malt Collection has given every single one of them a bottle of whisky – this 17 Years Old Bunnahabhain is one of them.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 17 Years Old The Chess Malt Collection is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a sherry hogshead and bottled at 53.4%.

The Danish bottler The Chess Malt Collection has, since 1989, selected single casks from across Scotland and let each bottle stand for a piece on the chessboard – two kings, two queens, four bishops, four knights, four rooks and sixteen pawns, split between the classic black and white. This Bunnahabhain is bottled as rook A8-F7, number 22 in the line-up.

The whisky was distilled in November 2008 and rested for 17 years in a sherry hogshead before being bottled in November 2025 without chill filtration and without added colour.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark sherry and dried fruit settle around a whisper of peat ash and toasted almond.

It took decades before Bunnahabhain added an 18 Years Old to the core range, and the wait shows in every glass.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 18 Years Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-sherry casks and bottled at 46.3%.

Eighteen years on sherry wood has given the whisky a golden depth and a maturity that builds on the distillery's lighter core style. It's a dram that takes its time unfolding in the glass and rewards whoever gives it the space to do so.

The small batch assembly keeps every bottling at the same high standard, without sacrificing the variation single casks would otherwise bring.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sugared nuts and a greeting from the sea, backed by generous caramel and leathery oak.

    Item no.: 222233-8853

Andrew Symington has tasted his way through thousands of casks over the years, and when he puts his own name on a series, it's worth paying attention.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 2001/2025 Symington's Choice 23 Years Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in an oloroso sherry butt and bottled at cask strength, 59.5%.

Symington's Choice is Signatory Vintage's newer series, named in honour of the founder himself, gathering some of the most richly matured casks from the house's vast stock. This Bunnahabhain was distilled in October 2001 and rested for 23 years on cask #1438, before being bottled straight from the wood in April 2025.

The long maturation on oloroso sherry has given the whisky a deep, almost mahogany hue, and at 59.5% cask strength, every drop of water you add opens fresh layers in the glass.

    Tasting Notes

Dark chocolate, dried plums and a warm spiciness of nutmeg and cinnamon.

    Item no.: 059763-615-920

For three generations, Douglas Laing has had a soft spot for the quiet and the rare, and this 18 Years Old Bunnahabhain from the Old Particular range shows exactly why.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 2004/2023 Old Particular 18 Years Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single ex-bourbon cask, bottled at 52%.

The whisky was distilled in December 2004 and left to rest on its bourbon cask right up until July 2023, when Douglas Laing bottled it as part of their well-regarded Old Particular series – a range that has stood for unadorned single cask bottlings since 1948.

Eighteen years on a refill bourbon cask gives the whisky room to breathe without being overwhelmed by the oak, and the result is a clear, age-stated Bunnahabhain that still lets the distillery's core character speak for itself.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and light honey surround a fresh hint of sea salt and ripe pears.

    Palate

Soft and round with sweet bourbon cask, apple and a gentle spiciness that grows warmer as it lingers.

    Item no.: 059763-615-909

Some casks get left a little longer because whoever is tasting them along the way can't quite let go – or so the story goes with this 12 Years Old from Signatory.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 2007/2019 Signatory Vintage 12 Years Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a 1st fill sherry butt and bottled at cask strength, 58.1%.

Signatory Vintage filled this cask, #589, in February 2007 and left it undisturbed for twelve years, before drawing it straight from the wood in October 2019 without reducing the strength. That leaves a whisky with all the power the sherry cask has to offer, and nothing added to soften it.

587 bottles came from this single cask, and no two are quite alike from first pour to last – that's the nature of a single cask.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark sherry, raisins and a rich hint of leather, carried on a warm, spiced note of cloves.

At 63.8%, this bottle sits close to the upper end of what a sherry cask typically yields at bottling without adjustment – the longer the maturation, the more alcohol normally evaporates, so a high strength after ten years is unusual.

    Item no.: 2227865479-1106-197280322-130

From Italy comes Valinch & Mallet, with a soft spot for single casks and a clear sense of when a cask still has more to give.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 2013/2022 Valinch & Mallet 9 Years Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a sherry cask, bottled at cask strength, 52.8%.

The whisky is part of Valinch & Mallet's The Young Masters Edition, a series showing what relatively young casks can do when chosen with care. The cask, #900070, was filled in 2013 and bottled again in 2022, yielding 378 bottles in total.

The sherry cask has given the whisky a deep colour and a full spiciness that balances nicely against Bunnahabhain's lighter core character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sherry sweetness meets dried fruit and a light spiced warmth.

    Palate

Full-bodied with raisins, caramel and a peppery edge from the cask strength.

    Item no.: 059763-615-513

Twenty-five years on wood is a long time to wait for a bottle, but Bunnahabhain's own flagship proves patience and a quiet corner of Islay make a fine pair.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 25 Years Old Small Batch Distilled is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled without chill filtration and without added colour at 46.3%.

The whisky is assembled in small batches from selected casks, letting the distillery show off Bunnahabhain's mature side rather than just its younger, fresher character. Sherry, caramel and toasted nuts sit on top of the distillery's core maritime, unpeated style, cultivated since 1881.

The result is a whisky that can stand alone for quiet reflection, yet still impress a collector already familiar with the distillery's younger releases.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Spiced oak, dry sherry and a hint of dark marmalade, lifted by a light salty breeze.

    Palate

Smooth and sweet with caramel, toasted almonds and ripe berries, tied together by a soft, spicy warmth.

    Finish

Thirty-three years is a long time to sit still in a cask, and when Hunter Laing finally bottles it, they do so with the reverence the age deserves.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 33 Years Old The Kinship 2023 is a Single Islay Malt Whisky from a refill bourbon hogshead, bottled at natural cask strength, 48.8%.

The Kinship is Hunter Laing's prestigious series, honouring the Scotch whisky community and the regions that have made the country famous for its whisky. This 33 Years Old Bunnahabhain is bottled from a single cask in 2023, yielding just 292 bottles worldwide.

The long maturation shows Bunnahabhain's ability to craft rich, refined whisky without smoke, where the distillery's clean house style and coastal setting come through beautifully. The nose offers tropical fruits like pineapple and lime, joined by red cherries and a faint floral note.

On the palate the whisky unfolds with a fine balance between freshness and depth – the fruity notes continue with juicy citrus and ripe berries, while Bunnahabhain's signature maritime tones show through with a touch of sea salt.

Twenty-one years in the dark, three different cask types and enough patience to see it all through. Bushmills 21 Year Old is the distillery's most ambitious permanent release.

    Expert Review

Bushmills 21 Year Old is an Irish Single Malt Whiskey matured in Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry and Madeira casks, bottled at 40%.

The whiskey begins its journey in Bourbon casks, moves to Oloroso Sherry casks, and finishes with a final period in Madeira casks, a three-stage process that is unusual even for a single malt of this age. The extra two years on Madeira add a light wine-driven sweetness that sits on top of the classic Bushmills style.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dried fruit, honey and a touch of nuts, with a light wine-driven undertone.

    Palate

Rich and full, with caramel, dark chocolate and ripe raisins.

  • Caledonian Signatory Vintage bottle from a closed grain distillery
    Item no.: 22227865363-8818

Caledonian sat in the middle of Edinburgh and was in its day the largest grain distillery in Europe. Today there are flats on the site, and the only thing left stands in bottles.

    Expert description

Caledonian 1987/2018 Signatory Vintage 31 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky bottled at 50.2% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The whisky was distilled in 1987 and bottled in 2018 in a run of 249 bottles. Caledonian was founded in 1855 in Edinburgh's Dalry district and closed in 1988, which places this spirit among the final production years.

Grain whisky is rarely matured for three decades, because it is traditionally used young in blends. That is precisely why old grain bottlings have become a category of their own: the light, creamy character develops over time into vanilla, fudge and coconut with a velvet texture.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and cream caramel with coconut, ripe pear and a stroke of freshly cut oak.

    Palate

Silky and creamy with toffee, honey and citrus oil. There is a fine grainy elegance that only long maturation delivers.

    Finish

Long and warm with fudge, light spice and a pleasant dryness.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197279855

Cambus was for decades the quiet supplier nobody wrote about. The distillery closed in 1993, and only afterwards did people realise how good that old grain spirit had become with time.

    Expert description

Cambus 1988 The Clan Denny 25 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky from a Refill Hogshead, bottled at cask strength, 58.1%.

Clan Denny is Douglas Laing's series of single cask grain whiskies, and grain is a category the house has worked with extensively. The whisky was distilled in 1988, five years before Cambus closed, and spent 25 years in a quiet refill cask.

A refill cask does not dominate the spirit but lets the natural sweetness of the grain and its developed depth come through. At cask strength all the concentrated aromas from both grain and wood are preserved.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and cream caramel with light coconut, ripe pear and a soft, creamy sweetness. A trace of fresh oak and light spice sits underneath.

    Palate

    Item no.: 2222666321-5542

Amarone is made from grapes left to dry before pressing. Casks that held that wine are concentrated, dark and slightly uncompromising — exactly the sort of contrast a thirty year old grain whisky can use.

    Expert description

Cambus 1991 Coopers Choice 29 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in a bourbon cask and finished in Amarone wine cask #9067, bottled at 46.2% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The Coopers Choice is the series from The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, founded in 1992 by Brian Crook. The house is known for experimenting with unusual finishes, and Amarone is among the more assertive it has worked with. The cask gave 336 bottles.

Cambus closed in 1993, so spirit from the early 1990s comes from its final operating years. After 29 years in bourbon wood the grain whisky has turned soft and creamy, and the wine cask lays a coat of dark fruit over the top without covering the sweetness.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisin and dark cherry with vanilla, fudge and a stroke of dried fig.

    Palate

Soft and round with toffee, plum and a light vinous acidity. The creamy grain character carries the fruit without struggling against it.

Filled in July 1991, emptied in January 2015. Cambus managed to close in between, and the cask simply minded its own business while the distillery's chimneys disappeared from the Clackmannanshire skyline.

    Expert description

Cambus 1991/2015 Signatory Vintage 23 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky from Refill Butt #55890, bottled at cask strength, 53.9%, with natural colour.

The whisky was distilled on 24 July 1991 and bottled on 19 January 2015. The cask gave 541 bottles, which fits a butt of around 500 litres. Cambus closed in 1993, so the spirit comes from its final production years.

A refill cask is the right type for grain whisky meant to sit for a long time. It gives up its influence slowly and lets the light spirit develop vanilla, coconut and fudge without being smothered in oak.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and coconut with pale grain, met by a fine, sweetish note of freshly baked cake.

    Palate

Creamy and soft with fudge, honey and pale spice. The strength brings concentration rather than sharpness.

Thirty years in the same bourbon cask, no finish, no detours. It is the most honest way to show what time alone does to grain whisky — and why old Cambus casks have become hunted.

    Expert description

Cambus 1991/2021 Coopers Choice 30 Years is a Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky from Bourbon Cask #29218, bottled at 49.5% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The whisky was distilled in May 1991 and bottled in 2021 after thirty years in the same cask. The cask gave 300 bottles. The Coopers Choice is the series from The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, which buys and selects single casks from across Scotland.

Cambus stood in Clackmannanshire and was one of the classic Lowland grain distilleries. It closed in 1993, and the buildings today serve only for cask repair. With no wine or sherry finish, this bottling is a clean reading of what time and American oak can do.

Sherry casks and grain whisky are not an obvious pairing — sherry can easily flatten the light spirit. Here a used oloroso butt has had thirty-one years to go about it quietly.

    Expert description

Cambus 1991/2023 Signatory Vintage 31 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky from Refill Oloroso Butt #104229, bottled at cask strength, 50.5%, without chill filtration and without added colour.

Cambus closed in 1993, and spirit from 1991 is among the last it made. A refill oloroso butt releases sherry character slowly, and after three decades the nuts and dried fruit are woven into the sweetness of the grain rather than sitting on top of it.

264 bottles. That is everything that came out of thirty-two years in a single bourbon cask. Evaporation took the rest, and what remains is concentrated in a way young whiskies cannot imitate.

    Expert description

Cambus 1991/2024 Coopers Choice 32 Years is a Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky from Bourbon Cask #79880, bottled at 47.5% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The whisky was distilled in September 1991 at the now closed Cambus distillery and bottled in January 2024 as part of the Cooper's Choice series from The Vintage Malt Whisky Company. The cask gave 264 bottles.

After thirty-two years the strength sits at 47.5%, which tells you the cask lost some power along the way. That is typical of very long maturation in a quiet warehouse and gives a softer whisky than bottlings still above 50%.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla custard and coconut macaroon with ripe banana and a trace of pale oak.

    Palate

Very soft and creamy with fudge, honey and white chocolate. The age reads as texture rather than as wood.

  • Cambus Woodrows Curators Cut bottle with 34 year old grain whisky
    Item no.: 0597639-9632

There are not many left who remember the sound of Cambus running. The distillery closed in 1993, and all that remains are the casks and the stories they hold.

    Expert description

Cambus 1991/2025 Woodrow's of Edinburgh 34 Years is a Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky from 2nd Fill Puncheon #103260A, bottled at 52% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The bottle belongs to the Curators Cut Edition from Woodrow's of Edinburgh, an independent bottler based in Leith. The spirit was distilled on 29 November 1991 at Cambus, one of the large Lowland grain distilleries that closed for good in 1993. Today the old distillery site is reduced to a cooperage for Diageo, where nothing is distilled and only casks are repaired.

Thirty-four years is a long time for a grain whisky, but that is also what makes the bottle interesting: the cask has had plenty of time to work without drowning out the light, elegant character grain whisky is known for. The cask gave 275 bottles.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla fudge and white chocolate first, then caramelised sugar and ripe pear. Behind them sit toasted almonds and a trace of oak that never becomes too much.

    Palate

Creamy, almost silky in the mouth. Toffee and vanilla custard glide across the palate with pale oak and a fine, dry grain note underneath.

    Finish

Long and warm with fudge, almond and a pleasant dryness from the puncheon.

High. Thirty-four years, a closed distillery and a run of 275 bottles. Old Cambus casks are among the most sought after in grain whisky.

    Did you know?

A puncheon typically holds around 500 litres like a butt, but is shorter and wider. The shape gives a different wood to liquid ratio, and the cask type is used more often for rum than for whisky.

  • Cameronbridge Cadenheads bottle with plain white label
    Item no.: 22225390-7550

Europe's largest grain distillery holds bottles most people never spot. Cameronbridge runs spirit at industrial scale for Diageo's blends, but once in a while a single cask slips free and is left to stand for more than three decades.

    Expert description

Cameronbridge 1992/2025 Cadenheads Original Collection 33 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in Bourbon Hogsheads and bottled at 42.7%.

Cameronbridge sits in Fife in the Lowlands and was founded in 1824 by John Haig. It is Europe's largest grain distillery and supplies most of Diageo's grain spirit for blends such as Johnnie Walker and Bell's. Single grain bottlings from the distillery are rare in themselves, and one with 33 years behind it is a curiosity that mainly surfaces through independent bottlers.

The release belongs to Cadenhead's Original Collection, the series from Scotland's oldest independent bottler. The whisky matured fully in bourbon hogsheads — the cask type that lets the soft, creamy character of grain speak with vanilla, coconut and pale spice instead of being covered by heavy sherry.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and coconut with yellow fruit, pale caramel and a light pastry note.

    Palate

Soft and rounded with fudge, honey and ripe pear. The lower strength makes it easy to drink without turning thin.

    Finish

Medium and creamy with vanilla, grain and a stroke of oak.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972492

Harmony is the name on the bottle, and it is not far off. Twenty-eight years have made this grain whisky calm and balanced without costing it the natural sweetness it started with.

    Expert description

Cameronbridge Spiritualist Harmony 1991/2020 Old Particular 28 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky bottled at 52.6% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The whisky was distilled in October 1991 and bottled in August 2020 from a single cask that gave 297 bottles for the entire world. Old Particular is Douglas Laing's series for single casks, and The Spiritualist is a sub-range where each bottle receives its own name.

Cameronbridge in Fife is Europe's largest grain distillery and has been producing since 1824. The spirit is light and smooth, and after nearly three decades in cask it has developed the creamy depth old grain whisky is known for.

    Tasting notes

Vanilla and pale caramel with ripe pear, coconut and a stroke of light grain.

    Palate

Natural sweetness balanced by a spiced edge. Fudge, honey and citrus peel with a soft, oily texture.

  • Bottle of Campbeltown Loch 21 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky from J&A Mitchell
    Item no.: 22227865434-6

Most people know Campbeltown Loch as the easy introduction to the region. The 21 year old is something else entirely - a mature, age-stated blend where time has been allowed to shape both malt and grain into something deeper.

    Expert Description

Campbeltown Loch 21 Year Old is a Campbeltown Blended Scotch Whisky composed of up to 60% single malt whisky and the remainder grain whisky, all a minimum of 21 years old, and bottled at 46%.

Where the younger Campbeltown Loch is a blended malt with no grain content, the 21 year old is a classic blended whisky carrying a substantial share of Springbank in its malt component. The long age guarantee across every component gives it a maturity and roundness that clearly sets it apart from the range's younger expressions.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Beeswax and graphite meet crisp apples, with ripe peaches sitting deep beneath the surface.

    Palate

Complex and spiced, with ginger biscuits, cinnamon and orange peel unfolding across the palate.

    Finish

Soft and spiced, with a lingering sweetness of orange and cinnamon that slowly fades.

  • Caol Ila 15 Years Unpeated Style 2018 official bottle without peat smoke
    Item no.: 22227865462-1000

Once a year, Caol Ila does something unexpected: they stop the peat and malt barley with untouched grain. The result is Caol Ila Unpeated Style – a window into what the distillery tastes like once smoke is taken out of the equation.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 15 Years Unpeated Style 2018 is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled in 2018 at cask strength 59.1% – one of the distillery's rarest official releases. Here the barley has been malted without peat.

Unpeated Style is a limited annual release Diageo has produced since the early 2000s, primarily for the Feis Ile festival on Islay. The 2018 edition shows what 15 years in oak casks gives to a distillate not defined by smoke.

Without peat smoke, Caol Ila's true distillate character emerges – flowers, vanilla, fresh fruit and richness from maturation. It is a different Caol Ila from the one people know, and for those accustomed to the island's smoke, it can feel almost foreign. That is precisely what makes it fascinating.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Floral and fruity – apple, pear and white flowers. Vanilla and honey from the oak, with a creamy sweetness that has no parallel in the peated bottlings.

    Palate

Rich and full without smoke's structure. Ripe fruit – peach, apricot – with soft oak and an almost diaphanous sweetness. Cask strength gives warmth and depth.

    Finish

Long and slightly exotic. Vanilla, ripe fruits and a note of floral honey – completely unlike the familiar biting close of smoke.

Low to Medium. Caol Ila Unpeated Style is a limited and discontinued official release from Diageo. The 2018 edition is sought by collectors following Caol Ila's rarer bottlings and has largely left the market.

    Did you know?

Caol Ila typically produces 3.3 million litres of pure alcohol per year. The unpeated edition accounts for only a tiny fraction – malted in the same mill as the peated versions but with grain that has never touched peat.

  • Caol Ila 1991 2009 Chieftains 18 Years German Oak Finish single cask bottle
    Item no.: 222556-635

1991 was an unusual year to distil Caol Ila. The distillery had just gone through a modernisation and found its current style. Ian MacLeod's Chieftains series took a cask from that year and gave it a finish in German oak – before it was bottled in 2009.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 1991/2009 Chieftains 18 Years is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in a German oak cask (cask no. 91821), bottled at 48% without chill filtration and with natural colour. 288 bottles.

Chieftains is Ian MacLeod's series for independent single-cask bottlings from Scottish distilleries. Ian MacLeod Distillers – owners of Glengoyne and Tamdhu – have had their finger on the pulse of Scotch whisky since 1933.

German oak (Quercus Robur) is denser and gives more tannin and spice than American oak casks. It gives a spicy finish to a Caol Ila that is otherwise elegant and balanced – light tobacco smoke, sea salt, citrus and green apples with well-integrated smoke.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light tobacco smoke, sea salt and seaweed combined with citrus and green apples. A subtle sweet malt profile and a hint of spice from the German oak.

    Palate

Soft and complex. Dry mineral smoke and pleasant sweetness in balance. Citrus, pear and lemon complemented by honey, vanilla and a touch of salty liquorice. The smoke is elegant and well-integrated.

    Finish

Long, clean and persistent – fresh smoke, light salt and a rounded fruity sweetness blending with malt and spice from the German oak.

  • Caol Ila 2010 2023 Old Malt Cask 13 Years Hunter Laing Oloroso Sherry Butt bottle
    Item no.: 059763-615-677

Caol Ila's peat smoke and the dried-fruit sweetness of a sherry butt pull in different directions – but they find each other. Hunter Laing selected this Oloroso sherry butt for the Old Malt Cask series, and after 13 years the result shows exactly what a well-matched cask marriage can produce.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 2010/2023 Old Malt Cask 13 Years is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single Oloroso sherry butt, bottled at 50% without chill filtration and with natural colour.

Hunter Laing & Co. is one of Scotland's most respected independent whisky families, with roots in Glasgow since 1949. Old Malt Cask is the company's classic series – single casks, natural colour, always at 50%. This cask yielded 769 bottles, distilled in August 2010 and bottled in October 2023.

Caol Ila on an Oloroso sherry butt is not the obvious choice – the distillery uses primarily bourbon casks for its official range. The sherry cask adds a layer of dried fruit and chocolate that softens the smoke and brings winey depth.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sherry-dried fruit – raisins and plums – meets Caol Ila's typical salty smoke. A hint of dark chocolate in the background.

    Palate

Soft and full. Smoke is present but tamed by the sherry cask. Dried figs, cloves and salted-caramel sweetness make it complex without heaviness.

    Finish

Moderately long. Smoke fades gently with dried fruit and a light touch of bitter dark chocolate at the end.
