Bowmore 12 Year Screen Printed Old Version is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured on ex-bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 43%. This is the old 100 cl format with a screen-printed label applied directly to the glass — a presentation that has since been discontinued. Screen printing directly onto bottles was standard on several of Bowmore's export markets and is today a hallmark collectors look for in older expressions.
The whisky inside is the classic Bowmore 12 Year from the distillery on the banks of Loch Indaal, founded in 1779. Matured on ex-bourbon and sherry casks at 43%, and developed in the distillery's iconic No. 1 Vaults — a warehouse that sits partly below sea level. That maritime environment leaves its mark on both nose and palate: salt breeze, a trace of smoke and honey from one of Islay's most storied distilleries.

In 1963 William Grant & Sons found themselves without access to grain whisky and built their own distillery in nine months. Girvan is the result, and these twenty-five years are what happens when you leave that plant to get on with it for long enough.

Girvan Patent Still 25 Years Old is a Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon casks with some sherry wood and virgin oak, bottled at 42%.
The distillery was raised in 1963 on the Ayrshire coast in answer to a trade dispute with the large blending houses of the day, and it has supplied the backbone of the William Grant blends ever since. The Patent Still range was the first serious attempt by the house to sell grain whisky under its own name, and the twenty-five year old opened the series.
The composition is a marriage of whisky from 1st fill and refill bourbon casks with a smaller share from sherry wood and virgin oak. The bourbon casks carry the creamy vanilla character, while the others lay darker fruit and spice underneath. The 42% is pitched low enough to let the texture do the carrying.

Nose
Masses of buttery vanilla, fresh apple and cinnamon stick, with dark peel and chocolate pralines behind.
Palate
Creamy and unctuous with white chocolate, citrus and lime, chewy caramels and pineapple, while soft American oak sits underneath.
Finish
Vanilla, ground cinnamon and a final cool note of mint.

The world outside Dufftown has changed a great deal since this whisky went into wood sometime in the 1980s, and since 2007, when Glenfiddich redesigned the 30 Year Old and raised the strength to 43%, this version has stood apart as a small piece of distillery history in its own right. This bottle is from before that change, back when it carried the name Blue Label and was bottled at 40%.

Glenfiddich 30 Year Old is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in Oloroso Sherry Casks and American Bourbon Casks and bottled at 40%. This is the original edition of Glenfiddich's 30 Year Old, launched in 2000 and discontinued when the distillery gave both the label and the strength an overhaul in 2007. Since then the 30 Year Old has been bottled at 43%, while this particular bottling still carries the old strength. Every cask is personally nosed and approved by Glenfiddich's Malt Master before it earns a place in the final vatting, and only a limited number of casks make it all the way through thirty years in the warehouse. Maturation alternates between Spanish Oloroso Sherry Casks, which lend depth and dark fruit, and American Bourbon Casks, which contribute vanilla and a touch of sweetness. The result is a whisky that carries three decades of patience within it, complex but never heavy.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Dark oak, toasted almond and a hint of spiced sherry greet the nose first. Behind that sits dried fig and a faint, damp earthiness reminiscent of an old library.
Palate
The palate is round and full-bodied with notes of date, caramelised sugar and a slightly bitter orange peel. Oak steps forward clearly alongside warm festive spices, cinnamon and clove.

Deanston 17 years Old Version is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.
The release predates Deanston moving its core range to 46.3% without chill filtration and without added colouring. Seventeen years in cask is uncommon even today, and when this was bottled it was among the house's oldest releases. Deanston has distilled since the mid-1960s in a converted cotton mill by the River Teith, and the long maturations show a different side from the core range.

Nose
Mature and restrained. Honey, dried apple and malt, with vanilla, nuts and a dusty note from the years in glass.
Palate

Glenfarclas 105 Old Version Cask Strength Single Highland Malt Whisky 60%

Tall and slim instead of low and broad. The bottle shape alone says this 105 comes from another time — today’s release arrives in a short, squat bottle, while the older ones were filled into tall bottles.
Please note: There is a white band around the bottle neck and light scratches on the top of the box.

Glenfarclas 105 Old Version is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at cask strength 60% in a 75 cl bottle.
The bottling appears to date from the 1980s. The 75 cl was the European standard until 70 cl took over in the early 1990s, and the tall bottle shape was later replaced by the low, broad one Glenfarclas uses today. The whisky carries the white band around the neck.
The contents follow the same idea as the current 105 — sherry-matured Glenfarclas at full strength with no age statement. But spirit from the 1970s and 80s has a reputation for being heavier and oilier than what is made today, and for many collectors that is exactly why the older bottles are interesting.
Tasting notes
Nose
Complex and oaky, with apples, pears and a sweet, dark toffee. There is a dusty depth that older bottles often develop.
Palate
Dry and assertive. It develops quickly to reveal a rich spiciness combined with a hint of oak and sherried fruit. At 60% there is a lot at once, but it is warming rather than sharp.
Finish
Amazingly smooth for the strength. Warming and with a lingering smokiness, yet gathered and round.

Gordon & MacPhail in Elgin has bottled whisky from across Scotland since 1895 and is among the most important sources of bottles from closed distilleries.

Nose
Soft and malty. Honey, dried apple and cereal, with a dusty note from the years in glass.
Palate

Famous Grouse The Black Grouse Alpha Edition No 1 is a Blended Scotch Whisky made with peated malt and bottled at 40%.
The release originally appeared as a travel retail exclusive and has since been discontinued. It builds on The Black Grouse, but where the original draws its smoke from a rare peated expression of Glenturret, Alpha Edition turns the volume up by letting peated Islay malt take up far more of the blend. The result is denser, darker and less compromising than anything else in the Grouse family.
Behind the smoke sit the malts that have defined the brand, Highland Park among them, bound together with grain whisky. The number on the label suggests more were planned for the series, but it is the first that has held on as a collector item.
Tasting notes
Nose
Heavy bonfire smoke and soot, with seaweed and a touch of iodine underneath. The honey sweetness is still there, but you have to look for it.
Palate
Powerful and oily. Peat smoke, dark chocolate and toasted malt, while a syrupy sweetness holds the whole thing together.
Finish
Long, dry and ashy with pepper and a final salted note.

Springbank 15 Year Old is a Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky distilled at Springbank, predominantly matured in sherry casks and bottled at 46%.
Springbank is the only distillery in Scotland that handles the entire process from malting to bottling itself, on the same site, by the same hands. The barley is floor malted, dried over the distillery's own kiln and distilled 2.5 times: part of the spirit is distilled twice, another part three times, and the two streams are blended afterwards. The 15 year old is a permanent fixture of the core range, and its predominantly sherry-cask maturation gives the whisky a dark, rich colour and a fullness of dried fruit and spice. The distillery was founded in 1828 and remains family owned by the Mitchell family, making it Scotland's oldest independent distillery.

The 43% may look low for a twenty-five year old, but it is a deliberate choice. After that many years in sherry casks the whisky is already concentrated, and a higher strength would make it hard rather than elegant. The balance between the sherry and the alcohol is the whole point of this bottling.
Glenfarclas can offer a continuous ladder from ten to forty years, which few family-owned distilleries can. It is because several generations have held back from selling the old casks off — something that requires being able to do without the income in the short term.

Delicate sweet smoke, orange marmalade and honey, with freshly ground coffee, sherry and nuts over a base of aged wood.

Nikka Yoichi 15 Year is a Single Malt Japanese Whisky, bottled at 45%.
Yoichi Distillery was founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934 on Hokkaido's west coast, the place he found most similar to the Scottish highlands where he learned the craft of whisky. The distillery still uses direct coal firing of its pot stills, a rare and demanding method that gives the whisky its characteristic power and smokiness.

A bottling that combines the historic early Ørbæk character of the organic Funen distillate with the simple, direct expression of a cask from the very first days. A concluded moment in Danish whisky's timeline.

Nose
Clean and fresh organic base. Light fruitiness with peach and gentle citrus notes. Light sweetness from the cask. A nose that reflects young, clean organic distillate.

Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 44%.
The whisky is assembled from selected casks aged roughly ten to fifteen years and is deliberately bottled a little stronger than the rest of the house range. The point is that it should stand up to the weight of tobacco without disappearing. This release is Version No. 2 of Cigar Malt, which Dalmore revived after a pause. The distillery at Alness has worked with sherry casks since the nineteenth century, and it is that same dark, concentrated style underneath.
Tasting notes
Nose
Powerful and dark. Raisin, orange marmalade and dark chocolate, with cinnamon, clove and a warm note of tobacco and leather.
Palate
Full and dense. Dried fruit, caramel and spice, with an oily texture and a dry oak edge. The 44% gives extra weight compared with the house 40% releases.
Finish
Long and warm, with spice, dark fruit and a dry, almost tobacco-like close.

Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 is a no-age-statement Tennessee Whiskey, bottled at 40%. Jack Daniel's Distillery was founded in 1866 by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and is officially registered as America's first distillery. All production still happens on the same site, where the whiskey is filtered drop by drop through nearly 3 metres of sugar maple charcoal before going into new, charred oak barrels — the Lincoln County Process that defines Tennessee Whiskey.
The core of the recipe is a mash of corn, rye and malted barley, fermented, distilled and then filtered through the charcoal before resting in new, charred oak barrels. The result is the smoothness and round sweetness the brand is known for worldwide.

Nose
The nose offers caramel, vanilla and a hint of banana, carried by the characteristic smoothness from the charcoal filtering.
Palate
The palate is round and lightly sweet, with caramel and gentle oak spice, without sharp edges.
Finish
The finish is short to medium, warm and soft, with a lingering caramel and vanilla note.
