Famous Grouse The Black Grouse Alpha Edition No 1 is a Blended Scotch Whisky made with peated malt and bottled at 40%.

The release originally appeared as a travel retail exclusive and has since been discontinued. It builds on The Black Grouse, but where the original draws its smoke from a rare peated expression of Glenturret, Alpha Edition turns the volume up by letting peated Islay malt take up far more of the blend. The result is denser, darker and less compromising than anything else in the Grouse family.

Behind the smoke sit the malts that have defined the brand, Highland Park among them, bound together with grain whisky. The number on the label suggests more were planned for the series, but it is the first that has held on as a collector item.

Nose

Heavy bonfire smoke and soot, with seaweed and a touch of iodine underneath. The honey sweetness is still there, but you have to look for it.

Palate

Powerful and oily. Peat smoke, dark chocolate and toasted malt, while a syrupy sweetness holds the whole thing together.

An otter on the label and a distillery few people could name. The Flora & Fauna series was the first attempt to give the workhorses behind the big blends a bottle of their own.

Blair Athol 12 Years Flora & Fauna is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43%.

The series was launched in 1991 by United Distillers, today Diageo, and gathered 26 different single malts from distilleries that otherwise supplied only blends. The aim was to show the differences between Scotland's whisky regions. Most were bottled at 43%, while a few appeared at cask strength or in wooden boxes.

Blair Athol in Pitlochry has been the spirit's home since 1798. The style is heavy and nutty with a syrupy sweetness that makes the whisky recognisable among the other Highland malts in the series.

Malty sweetness with raisin, brown sugar and a nutty, almost meaty note underneath.

Palate

Full and syrupy with dried fruit, dark sugar and a stroke of spice. There is real weight through the middle.

Rebel Yell 80 Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's classic core expression, bottled at 40%. Rebel Yell was created in 1936 by Louisville's then-mayor Charles R. Farnsley to mark the 100th anniversary of the original Weller brand, with roots back to the Stitzel-Weller distillery of 1849. From the start, the brand used a wheated mash bill, giving it a softer, rounder character than a typical rye-based bourbon. After Stitzel-Weller closed in the early 1970s, the brand was acquired by Luxco, and since 2018 Rebel Yell has been distilled at the family's own distillery, Lux Row Distillers, in Bardstown, Kentucky.

Black Bottle 10 Years Old Version is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

Old Version refers to the bottle shape and label used before the brand relaunch. Both the packaging and the age statement have been retired, and the whisky is no longer produced in this form. The blend is built on Islay malt as its load-bearing element, joined by malt from the rest of Scotland and grain whisky.

The colour is rich and golden, and the profile leans on peat smoke and honey rather than cask spice. Ten years give the blend the roundness that keeps the smoke from ever standing alone.

There is a texture in Clynelish that nobody quite explains. Candle wax, beeswax, something that coats the tongue and stays there. Whisky people simply call it waxy and leave it at that.

Clynelish 14 years is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 46%.

The distillery sits on the coast in Sutherland, where the original Clynelish was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford. When a new distillery was built across the road in 1968, the old one was renamed Brora and closed in 1983. Clynelish is today one of the main ingredients in Johnnie Walker, but the 14 year old is where the distillery character stands at its clearest: maritime, waxy and with a freshness you do not find further south.

Tasting notes

Nose

Citrus peel and sea salt first, then wax, vanilla and heather. A cool, mineral note runs underneath it all and points straight at the coast.

Palate

Creamy and lively. Ripe fruit, malt, honey and a suggestion of smoke, carried by that distinctive waxy mouthfeel. The 46% gives bite without tightening things up.

Finish
