Five centilitres is enough for two decent sips. That is the amount you need to work out whether Glenfarclas 12 Year is for you, without committing to a full bottle.

    The expert's description

Glenfarclas 12 Year Miniature is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Speyside, matured in sherry casks and bottled at 43% in a 5 cl bottle.

The contents are the same as in the full-size bottle. The whisky has spent at least twelve years in a mix of oloroso sherry casks, and 43% is the distillery standard strength for this bottling.

Miniatures like this one are typically used for tastings, gift sets and travel. The format makes it easy to line several distilleries up side by side and taste through them in one evening.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sherry, raisin and a dry nutty note. There is a green freshness beneath the sweetness that many associate with Glenfarclas.

    Palate

Full and round. Dark fruit, malt and a mild spiced warmth. Medium body with clear sherry character.

    Finish

Medium length with nuts, dried fruit and a light dry oak note.

    Did you know?

The Family Casks was launched in 2007 with a bottling from every single vintage between 1952 and 1994. That requires somebody to have left the casks untouched for over fifty years, and few distilleries are able to do it.

Frequently asked questions about Glenfarclas 12 Year Miniature

How many drams are in 5 cl?

Two small ones or one regular. A normal dram is 3-4 cl, so the bottle covers a single tasting, or two sips if you share it.

Are the contents the same as the 70 cl bottle?

Yes. Same whisky, same age and same 43% strength. Only the bottle is smaller.

What is a miniature used for?

Tastings, gift sets and travel. Many people also use them to try a distillery before buying a full bottle.

How long does an opened miniature keep?

Less time than a full bottle. There is a lot of air relative to liquid once the stopper is off, so finish it within a couple of weeks.

What does Glenfarclas 12 Year taste like?

Sherry-led with raisin, nuts and malt, without being heavy. It sits somewhere between the fresh and the dark, which is one reason it keeps selling.

    Is it smoky?

No. Glenfarclas uses unpeated malt, so there is no smoke note. See the other Scottish styles in our Scotch Whisky selection.

    Can you collect miniatures?

Plenty of people do. Miniatures take up little space, and older releases with earlier label designs hold clear interest among collectors.
