Some bottles become interesting because they disappeared. This version of Black Bottle 10 Years was pulled from the shelves when the brand changed its clothes — and only afterwards did people realise what they had been keeping.

    Expert description

Black Bottle 10 Years Old Version is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

Old Version refers to the bottle shape and label used before the brand relaunch. Both the packaging and the age statement have been retired, and the whisky is no longer produced in this form. The blend is built on Islay malt as its load-bearing element, joined by malt from the rest of Scotland and grain whisky.

The colour is rich and golden, and the profile leans on peat smoke and honey rather than cask spice. Ten years give the blend the roundness that keeps the smoke from ever standing alone.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light, fresh and fruity on first approach, with unmistakable hints of peat underneath. Baked apple and a waxy grain note follow.

    Palate

A gentle honey sweetness fills the palate before the signature smoke settles over everything. Malt, dried fruit and a touch of peppery warmth.

    Finish

Long and warming with a clear smoked Islay character that stays put well after the sip has gone.

Frequently asked questions about Black Bottle 10 Years Old Version Blended Scotch Whisky 40%

    What does "Old Version" mean?

It is the term we use for the retired bottle shape and label from before the relaunch. The whisky in this form is no longer produced, so only remaining stock is left.

Does it taste different from the current Black Bottle?

Yes. The older release is more malt-driven and honeyed, and the smoke is rounder. After the relaunch the profile was tightened and the age statement left the core expression.

    Is it worth keeping?

As a collector's bottle it has plenty going for it: retired packaging, an age statement and a brand with a story reaching back to 1879. The quality in the glass is the same whether you open it or shelve it.

How smoky is it on a scale?

It sits in the mild to medium range. The smoke is clear on the finish but never turns medicinal or tarry the way the heaviest Islay malts do.

    What does it pair with?

Try it with smoked fish, a mature cheddar or dark chocolate. The smoke plays against salt and fat, and the honey sweetness ties it together.

What is the difference between blended whisky and single malt?

A blended Scotch combines malt and grain whisky from several distilleries, while a single malt comes from one distillery only and is made from malted barley. Blends are typically softer and more rounded.
