  • Bottle of Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried Single Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865465-7

Some bottles just need room to breathe - Blossoming Auld Sherried is Michel Couvreur's masterpiece, bottled after 14 years in casks from a bygone era.

    Expert's description

Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried 14 Year Old is a Single Malt Whisky from a single cask, bottled at 45 percent.

The whisky has matured for 14 years in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks from the 1950s, and the age of the cask gives a depth rarely encountered even by seasoned sherry-whisky lovers. The style is meant as a full tribute to the powerful, sherry-matured whisky of the Victorian era - soft, heavy and in no way restrained.

Michel Couvreur passed away in 2013, but the house is carried on by his son-in-law Jean-Arnaud, following the same philosophy. The casks still travel from Jerez to the damp cellars of Bouze-lès-Beaune, where young Scotch malt gets to mature further under French skies.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is bombarded with layer upon layer of sherry, followed by flowers, vanilla, chocolate, spice, dried fruit, hazelnuts and raisins.

    Palate

The palate is powerful and nuanced, sweet and dry at once, with fruit, caramel, chocolate, cinnamon and dried oranges, carried by a lovely cask influence.

    Finish

The finish is long and warm, with lingering notes of raisin, dark chocolate and a last hint of spiced wood.

  • Bottle of Michel Couvreur Special Vatting Malt Whisky with three ages
    Item no.: 22227865465-5

Three ages, three characters, one whisky - Special Vatting is Michel Couvreur's proof that a good vatting can add up to more than its parts.

    Expert's description

Michel Couvreur Special Vatting is a Malt Whisky matured in sherry casks and bottled at 45 percent.

The vatting combines three malt whiskies of different age and style: 5 percent 11 year old peated malt, 45 percent 12 year old light malt, and 50 percent 20 year old dark sherry malt. The combination gives a whisky with far greater complexity than a single age statement could hold, and is a clear example of Michel Couvreur's talent for composing rather than simply bottling.

Michel Couvreur began as a wine merchant in Burgundy in 1951 and only found whisky in 1978. Since then, fresh filling - refilling sherry casks the same day they're emptied - has been his signature, and he claimed a 4-5 year old whisky matured this way could rival a 30 year old aged in used casks.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers a whisper of peat under a blanket of sherry, dried fruit and a warm caramel sweetness from the oldest parts of the vatting.

    Palate

The palate is deep and layered, with sherry and dark chocolate up front, a touch of smoke in the middle, and a light, bright sweetness tying it all together.

    Finish

The finish is long, with lingering notes of dried raisins, a hint of smoke and a last warmth of oak.

The Unexpected is the name the whisky itself has chosen to describe what a French sherry cask can do to Scotch malt over 10 years.

    Expert's description

Michel Couvreur The Unexpected No. 2 is a Single Malt Whisky matured in a sherry cask and bottled at 50 percent.

The whisky was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2022 after 10 years of cask maturation, and like the rest of the house range it's matured further via Michel Couvreur's fresh filling method in the cellars of Burgundy. The high strength of 50 percent gives the whisky a power that sets it apart from several of the house's milder bottlings.

Michel Couvreur travelled to Scotland himself to find the casks he believed in, then let them mature further in his own Burgundy cellars - a process that still sets the house apart from almost everyone else in the market today.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is intense with sherry, dark chocolate and dried fruit, spiced with a hint of cinnamon.

The 7 Sister Casks concept at Mosgaard is based on the idea of bottling 7 casks of the same type together. Rather than highlighting a single cask – and thus a single character – Mosgaard blends the 7 casks into one batch expression. This gives greater consistency, more depth, and a more accessible entry point to the whisky than a single cask alone.

Pedro Ximenez (PX) is a grape grown in the Jerez region of southern Spain. The grapes are sun-dried to raisins, concentrating the sugar content to the extreme. The resulting sherry is so sweet it is almost syrupy. A PX cask that has held this sherry transfers its dense sweetness directly to the matured distillate.

    Item no.: 22227865403-111

In the valley by the Nikkawa river north of Sendai, Masataka Taketsuru built his second distillery - deliberately different from his first, to give Nikka two distinct voices.

    Expert Description

Nikka Miyagikyo 12 Year Old is a Single Malt Japanese Whisky, bottled at 45%.

The whisky comes from Miyagikyo Distillery, founded in 1969 by Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru in a spot he himself described as resembling Scotland's Speyside. With its slender stills and a milder, more fruit-forward spirit than sister distillery Yoichi, Miyagikyo is known for its floral, sherry-rich style.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe apples and pears meet a delicate sherry sweetness and a touch of vanilla.

    Palate

Soft and fruity with honey, light spice and a fine, sherry-driven depth.

    Finish

Medium length and soft, with a last note of dried fruit.

    Investment Potential

High. Nikka discontinued most of its age-stated releases around 2015 due to limited stock, making a 12-year-old Miyagikyo like this one increasingly hard to find.

    Did You Know?

Masataka Taketsuru deliberately chose Miyagikyo's location because its climate and water were the exact opposite of Yoichi's - he wanted two distilleries that could each speak in their own voice within Nikka's blends.

  • Nikka Taketsuru 17 Year bottle
    Item no.: 7865464-10191

Seventeen years of maturation lift the Taketsuru series to its most mature expression - a deeply complex tribute to the man behind the entire Japanese whisky industry.

    Expert Description

Nikka Taketsuru 17 Year is a Pure Malt Japanese Whisky, bottled at 43%.

The whisky is named after Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka and often called "the father of Japanese whisky." This 17-year-old edition combines mature malt whiskies from Nikka's distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo, without added grain whisky, giving a deeper and more complex profile than the series' younger editions.

    Palate

Full-bodied and complex with spice, honey and ripe fruit.

    Investment Potential

    Investment perspective

Nikka Taketsuru 17 Year is among the rarer editions in the series, and as with many older Japanese whiskies, prices often rise as the distillery's stocks of sufficiently mature casks dwindle.

    Did You Know?

The Taketsuru series was launched as a direct tribute to Nikka's founder and uses only malt whisky with no grain whisky blended in, unlike most other Nikka releases.

  • Nikka Yoichi 15 Year bottle with sea-breeze label
    Item no.: 22227865403-6

Yoichi sits where the Japan Sea meets the coast, and the salty air has shaped the whisky for fifteen years.

    Expert Description

Nikka Yoichi 15 Year is a Single Malt Japanese Whisky, bottled at 45%.

Yoichi Distillery was founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934 on Hokkaido's west coast, the place he found most similar to the Scottish highlands where he learned the craft of whisky. The distillery still uses direct coal firing of its pot stills, a rare and demanding method that gives the whisky its characteristic power and smokiness.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Peated smoke, sea salt and ripe dark fruits.

    Palate

Powerful with smoke, sherry and a hint of liquorice.

    Finish

Long and warm with lingering smoke and spice.

    Investment Potential

    Investment perspective

Nikka Yoichi 15 Year was discontinued as a core range expression in 2015 and today often trades well above its original release price when bottles appear on the secondary market.

    Did You Know?

Yoichi Distillery is one of only two Japanese whisky distilleries still using direct coal firing to heat its pot stills - a method most others abandoned decades ago.
