Six copper stills sit under Ben Rinnes, heated by naked gas flame. They are the biggest in Speyside, and nobody ever built them to rush. Across the yard, the dunnage warehouses hold casks from Jerez and a great deal of patience.

    Expert description

Glenfarclas 17 years is a Speyside Single Malt Whisky matured in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 43%.

It belongs to the distillery's regular age range, sitting between the 15 and the 21. Even so, it can be hard to track down. Allocations to Europe have been thin at times, and in Germany it vanished from shelves for five years before returning as a limited batch in 2026.

The Grant family bought Glenfarclas in 1865 and still runs it today as J. & G. Grant, one of very few Scottish distilleries with no outside owner. The recipe is short: malted barley, spring water from Ben Rinnes and yeast. The spirit is double distilled in direct fired stills, where the flame hits the copper itself. That gives a heavier, oilier new make, sturdy enough to spend many years in sherry wood without being swamped by it.

All 17 years were spent in casks that previously held Oloroso sherry, supplied by the José y Miguel Martín cooperage in Jerez. The mix is first fill and refill casks of different sizes. The 1st fill casks bring dark fruit, raisins and dates, while the refills hold back a little so the toffee and spice of the malt still come through. The colour is entirely from the wood.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Buttery toffee and malt up front. Then candied orange peel, dates and raisins, with a faint dry wisp of smoke right at the bottom of the glass if you go looking.

    Palate

Full and slightly oily. Nutmeg and cinnamon settle over sherried fruit, mixed peel and a square of dark chocolate, with oak holding it all together.

    Finish

Long. The spice lingers alongside a sweet raisin note, and right at the end a small puff of smoke.

    Did you know?

The label says Highland, even though Glenfarclas sits right in the middle of Speyside. That is no mistake. Speyside is officially a sub-region of the Highlands, and Glenfarclas has simply stuck with the older name.

Frequently asked questions about Glenfarclas 17 years

What does Glenfarclas 17 years taste like?

It tastes of sherry, toffee and dark fruit with warming spice. Raisins, dates and orange peel lead the way, while nutmeg and cinnamon add an edge. There is also a faint touch of smoke, which surprises a lot of people in a Speyside Single Malt Whisky.

Is Glenfarclas 17 years worth it?

Yes, if you enjoy sherry matured whisky. It has spent a full 17 years in Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez, comes from one of Scotland's last family owned distilleries and is harder to find than the 12 and 15 from the same range.

What is the difference between Glenfarclas 15 and 17 years?

The 17 is the rounder and more mature of the two. It is bottled at 43% where the 15 is at 46%, and the extra years in cask give deeper fruit and softer oak.

Should Glenfarclas 17 years be drunk with water or ice?

Try it neat at room temperature first. A few drops of water can open up the sweet fruit, but ice shuts down too much of the sherry character.

Which glass suits Glenfarclas 17 years?

A tulip shaped glass such as a Glencairn gathers the aromas of dates and caramel best. Browse our range of whisky glasses.

What food goes with Glenfarclas 17 years?

It works well with dark chocolate, aged hard cheeses and desserts built on nuts or dried fruit. An old Gouda or a slice of Christmas cake can easily stand up to the sherry casks.

Why does Glenfarclas use so many sherry casks?

Sherry casks have been the house style for generations, and the casks come from the same cooperage in Jerez. To learn more about what sherry wood does to whisky, read our article on sherry casks.
