Scotch Whisky

The first thing people think of when they hear the word Scotland is whiskey, including  Scotch as it is also called. Although Scotland is known for many things other than just whiskey, such as golf, haggis and kilts, it is for good reason that it is precisely the whiskey that, over time, has been dubbed 'Scotch'. The Scots have always been the true pioneers of whiskey making, which many others have tried to emulate, including the Irish, the Americans and even the Danes. However, none of these places has given rise to a similarity between their nation and their whiskeys. Even in Ireland, where one is also very proud of their Irish whiskeys, the impact and marketing effect has been as great as in Scotland.

It is especially because of the very varied nature of the Scottish highland and lowland respectively, as well as a fantastic entrepreneurial spirit that has enabled the Scots to produce such a large and varied selection of whiskey over time.

Generally, Scottish whiskey is divided into three main types: Each whiskey type has its own flavor and aroma, but the most prevalent type of Scotch Whiskey is Malt Whiskey. It is also from here that one has the very well known Single Malt Whiskeys, which is what most associate with Scottish whiskeys.

Find the right whiskey for your Scotch and soda

It's not just the whiskeys that 'Scotch' has become synonymous with. The same goes for drinks, specifically the legendary Scotch and soda cocktail. This cocktail originated in the USA in the 19th century as part of the highball trend imported to the United States by Englishmen.

Scotch and soda basically consists of Scotch whiskey and carbonated water - these can be both Blended Whiskeys, Grain Whiskeys and Single Malt Whiskeys. However, most people here agree that Single Malt Whiskeys are the best for this particular drink. Therefore, if you want an exclusive version of "Scotch and Soda", we highly recommend you use a Glenlivet Scotch or a Macallan Scotch.

How to make the drink:

Pour two parts of Scotch Whiskey into a glass and six parts of carbonated water. That is it! Here you can choose to use ordinary carbonated water or carbonated water with citrus as you prefer.

A "Scotch and Soda" can be a great way to start drinking whiskey, as the carbonated water makes the drink even more fresh, which especially young palates prefer.

Always fast delivery and free shipping

At Whiskey.dk we have assembled a large and powerful selection of delicious Scotch whiskey, so whether you are a seasoned whiskey connoisseur or completely green, we certainly have something to suit your taste. We always strives to have the largest and best selection of all kinds of whiskeys in Denmark. • Crabbie 8 years blended Scotch whisky bottle without carton
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197186

Eight years in cask, 43 percent and a name from Leith. Crabbie belongs to the blends that were drunk a lot and kept a little — which is exactly why the surviving bottles are interesting.

Please note: The bottle is supplied without a carton.

    Expert description

Crabbie 8 years Blended Old Scotch Whisky is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured for at least 8 years and bottled at 43%.

John Crabbie & Co was based in Leith near Edinburgh and was as much a merchant house as a whisky producer. Age-stated blends were a quality marker in that period, and eight years meant even the youngest component had lost its edges. The 43% was standard for export bottlings and gives more body than today's 40%.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt, cereal and dried fruit. Behind them sit honey, pale caramel and a trace of old wood.

    Palate

Soft and rounded. Raisin, orange, malt and vanilla, with a lightly spiced warmth and a dry edge from the grain whisky.

    Finish

Medium, dry and malty, with nuts and a hint of smoke right at the end.

    Specifications

Name: Crabbie 8 years Blended Old Scotch Whisky without carton 43%

    Investment potential

High. The release is discontinued, and older age-stated blends keep leaving the market as they get drunk.

Leith was Scotland's most important whisky port for more than a century. Casks were stored in warehouses along the quay and the blending houses sat close together — it was the harbour, not the distillery, that decided who could build a whisky business.

Most people know the Crabbie name from ginger wine. Fewer know the Leith house also sold whisky — and that bottles from those days still turn up with the carton intact.

    Expert description

Crabbie 8 years Blended Old Scotch Whisky is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured for at least 8 years and bottled at 43%.

John Crabbie & Co was founded in Edinburgh in the early 1800s and became world famous for its green ginger wine, but the house also traded and blended whisky. This release comes with its original carton, which makes a noticeable difference to a collector, since packaging was rarely kept. The 43% strength and the eight year age statement place it in an era when blends were still bottled with a little more body than today.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt and dried fruit first, then honey, pale caramel and a dusty note from the years in glass.

    Palate

Round and malty. Raisin, orange peel, cereal and a little vanilla, with a warm spiced edge from the 43%. The mouthfeel is softer than today's standard blends.

    Finish

Medium and dry, with malt, nuts and a lightly smoked close.

  • Auchroisk 2009/2019 Hepburns Choice 10 year old rum finish bottle, Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197142

Rum and Speyside are not an obvious pairing. The rum pulls the whisky towards molasses and baked banana, and that suits a spirit which already brings the fruit.

    The Expert's Description

Auchroisk 2009/2019 Hepburns Choice 10 Years Old is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky finished in a rum cask and bottled at 46%. The cask gave 182 bottles, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

A rum cask finish typically lasts from a few months to a couple of years. The rum’s sugarcane character lays molasses, brown sugar and baked fruit over the whisky’s own profile, without removing the underlying malt character.

Hepburns Choice is Hunter Laing’s range of single casks from younger whisky, often with a finish. Auchroisk was built in 1974 to supply malt for the J&B blend, and the distillery’s bright, citrus-driven style gives the rum cask something to work with.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Sweetness first, with molasses and brown sugar clearly to the fore. Vanilla, banana and a light citrus note from the spirit sit beneath.

    Palate

Sweet and full. Molasses and baked banana open, then vanilla, a lightly spiced oak note and a dry close to the sweetness arrive. At 46% the body is good, and the whisky holds its balance.

    Finish

Medium and sweet. Molasses, vanilla and a dry, lightly spiced close.

    Item no.: 22227865365-78790

Nine years on first fill sherry casks is not a long time — but it is enough when the wood is this active. There is a youthful energy here that older bottlings rarely have.

    The expert's description

Benrinnes 2007/2016 James Eadie 9 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in first fill Sherry Butts and bottled at 46 %.

The release is a small batch from two first fill sherry casks, distilled in 2007 and emptied in 2016. It produced 1,308 bottles, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

James Eadie is a name with roots back to 1854, when the brewer James Eadie began blending whisky in Burton upon Trent. The brand was revived by his great-great-grandson in 2015 and today bottles single cask and small batch releases with unusual transparency about cask type and origin.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Crisp and fruity with yellow apple, mango and cream toffee. The sherry shows as dried fig rather than dark sweetness.

    Palate

Sweetness from the first sip, quickly followed by malt, vanilla and white pepper. Apricot and a hint of cinnamon give it breadth, and the 46 % holds it all together.

    Expert's description

Kilchoman Machir Bay 20cl is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 46 %.

The whisky is exactly the same as in the full 70cl bottle — a blend of 3, 4 and 5 year old bourbon casks, where the 4 year old casks receive a finishing period of around eight weeks in sherry casks. The smaller bottle makes it ideal as an introduction, a travel format, or a small, natural gift idea.

Machir Bay best represents Kilchoman's style: fresh, citrus-tinged peat smoke carried on Islay's coastal air, combined with sweetness and spice from the sherry casks — all in a size that's easy to carry.

Ten years is enough to tame a wild whisky without putting out the fire. Port Charlotte 10 Year Old shows how refined a heavily peated whisky can become once time is allowed to work on the smoke.

    Expert description

Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Heavily Peated is a peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Bruichladdich, matured in bourbon and wine casks and bottled at 50%.

The whisky is distilled from 100% Scottish barley and matured in a combination of American bourbon casks and French wine casks, giving a deep and nuanced flavour profile. The modern take on traditional smoky whisky shows the distillery's ability to combine power with finesse.

Ten years of maturation tames the raw, youthful smoke and instead lets vanilla, oak and a mineral edge come through alongside the peat.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Marked peat smoke, sea salt and citrus, with a light floral note and vanilla and toasted malt beneath the smoke.

    Palate

Adelphi typically tastes 25 casks to find one good enough for their name. This is the one — a 20-year-old Arran, selected by two of the whisky trade's most respected figures.

Bottled at full cask strength to mark the independent bottler FC Whisky's 20th anniversary.

    Expert Description

Arran 1999/2020 Adelphi Selection 20 Year Old FC Whisky is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in cask number 465 and bottled at 52.5%.

The whisky was distilled on 31 December 1999 and bottled on 7 January 2020 by the independent whisky merchant Adelphi Selection, whose manager Alex Bruce and whisky writer Charles MacLean together approve fewer than 4% of the casks they taste. This bottle marks FC Whisky's 20th anniversary, and with only 175 bottles from a single cask, it's a rare chance to taste Arran through one of Scotland's most discerning independent bottlers.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The final chapter. After twenty-seven years the peat has become something else — barbecued meat, coal dust and rock salt, as Douglas Laing themselves described it when the bottle was let loose in 2019.

    The expert's description

Big Peat 27 years Vintage 1992 The Black Edition is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 48.3 %.

The whiskies were distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2019 in an outturn of 3,000 bottles, without chill filtration and without added colour. It is the closing release in the Vintage Series trilogy.

The series began with the Gold Edition at 25 years in 2017 and continued with the Platinum Edition at 26 years in 2018. The Black Edition closes the row and is at once the oldest and the most restrained of the three in strength.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Coal dust, barbecued meat and rock salt. Beneath the heavy smoke lie dried figs, coffee and a hint of old oak.

    Palate

  • Mossburn Fettercairn Single Highland Malt Whisky bottle from a bourbon cask
    Item no.: 22227865392-18769

Ten years is not long in whisky terms, and that is exactly the point here. Fettercairn is allowed to be young, bright and fruity before the oak starts deciding how the whole thing should taste.

    The expert description

Fettercairn 2008/2018 Mossburn 10 Years Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in an American standard barrel and bottled at 46%.

Mossburn is an independent bottler that sent out its first bottles in 2017 with the simple idea that whisky should be bottled at a minimum of 46%, without colouring and without chill filtration. This release was distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2018 from batch 30.1008.18.

The cask is an American Standard Barrel, an ex-bourbon cask of around 200 litres. It is the smallest of the common cask sizes, so the wood works faster, and even after ten years there is plenty of vanilla and oak in the glass without the fruitiness of the distillery disappearing.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and young. Green apple and pear first, then vanilla, coconut and a light cereal note from the malt.

    Palate

Bright and crisp with citrus peel, white peach and vanilla custard, while the oak lays a dry, lightly peppered edge underneath.

    Finish

Medium and clean with malt, a touch of ginger and a final note of fresh oak.

An American Standard Barrel holds around 200 litres and is the cask American bourbon is legally allowed to use only once. That is why the Scottish industry has for decades brought its casks over from Kentucky in large numbers, and why so much Scotch whisky tastes of vanilla and coconut.

  • Bottle of Bruichladdich Loch Indaal 2007 from Blackadder Raw Cask
    Item no.: 22227865413-18747

Before Port Charlotte had its own name, it was called Loch Indaal. This bottling from Blackadder is a raw, unfiltered trip back to Bruichladdich's early peated style, drawn straight from a single cask.

    Expert description

Bruichladdich Loch Indaal 2007 from Blackadder is a peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured for 10 years and bottled at 63.3%.

Loch Indaal is the name the peated Bruichladdich spirit carried before Port Charlotte became its own brand. The whisky was distilled in 2007 and bottled in August 2018 from a single hogshead, cask number 3413, by independent bottler Blackadder as part of their Raw Cask series.

Only 244 bottles were drawn from this single cask, with no cold filtration and no added colouring, giving a raw and undiluted taste of the peat straight from the wood.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raw peat smoke and sea salt, with a young, grainy sweetness and a touch of tar.

    Palate

Powerful and direct with intense smoke, black pepper and an oily, full texture from the high cask strength.

    Finish

Long and smoky with a dry, ashy edge and a lingering salty note.

  • Teaninich 1983 35 Year Old Signatory Vintage 30th Anniversary whisky
    Item no.: 22227865438-18721

Thirty-five years in a refill butt. A whisky distilled before Signatory Vintage even existed, bottled to celebrate the company's 30 years as an independent bottler.

    Expert description

Teaninich 1983/2018 is a 35-year-old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled on 7 December 1983 and bottled on 12 December 2018 by Signatory Vintage at 57.5% ABV.

The whisky comes from a refill butt, cask no. 8070, and was bottled in just 575 bottles as part of Signatory Vintage's 30th anniversary celebrations. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured, and the many years of maturation in the reused cask have given the spirit great depth without letting oak dominate.

At 35 years old, this Teaninich ranks among the rarest releases from the distillery, where most official bottlings are typically far younger.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe tropical fruit, beeswax and a delicate hint of old oak.

    Palate

Silky smooth, with notes of honey, dried apricot and a light spiced warmth.

    Finish

Long and elegant, with lingering sweetness and a touch of sandalwood.

  • Bottle of Bruichladdich 2010 Islay Barley, locally grown grain from the island
    Item no.: 22227865406-barley

2010 Islay Barley is a tribute to local farmers. The grain is grown on Islay itself, and the whisky shows what terroir means when the land is allowed to speak through the glass.

    Expert description

Bruichladdich 2010 Islay Barley is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled from locally grown barley and bottled at 50%.

The grain for this release is grown by local farmers on Islay, part of Bruichladdich's ongoing work to show how the island's own soil shapes flavour. The whisky is matured in a combination of American and French oak casks.

The result is an unpeated single malt where the grain's earthy character and the sweetness of the casks play off each other with no peat to complicate the picture.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh barley and apple, with a light honeyed sweetness, an earthy base and a touch of vanilla oak.

    Palate

Round and malty with notes of pear, citrus and a gentle spiciness from the French oak.
