Rum Categories

Are you, like us at Whisky.dk, absolutely crazy about rum? Then this page is just for you. On this page you can find a universe of rum. We have a great passion for rum and we really want to share it with you.

Rum is made from cane sugar and water. This mixture is fermented to form a liquid containing 8-10% alcohol. It is then distilled to an alcohol percentage of up to 90% and then stored on oak barrels. Once the rum has been stored, it is diluted to 40-43% alcohol and filled into bottles.

Below you can see our large selection of rum. We have many different brands and variants. By clicking on the categories below, you see different kinds of rum variants.

  • Hampden Estate Rum Fire bottle of clear Jamaican rum with black label
    Item no.: 22227865395-888875

Not a single cask is involved here. Only a long, wild fermentation in the humid heat of Trelawny, a copper pot still, and a spirit that goes into the bottle without a drop of colouring. Open it and the aroma has filled the room before the glass is poured.

    The expert's description

Hampden Estate Rum Fire Jamaican White Overproof Rum 70 cl 63% is an unaged Jamaican White Overproof Rum distilled from molasses in a pot still and bottled at 63%.

Hampden Estate sits in Trelawny on the north coast of Jamaica, a short way from Falmouth, and rum has been made on the estate since 1753. The distillery is known for its high ester style, meaning the aroma compounds that give Jamaican rum its penetrating character of overripe fruit and varnish. Fermentation runs for weeks rather than days, it is started by wild yeast instead of a cultured strain, and it is fed with dunder and acidified organic matter from the estate's own pits.

Rum Fire is the distillery's unaged bottling and the most direct route into that character. It is clear because it has never seen the inside of a cask, and nothing has been added, neither sugar nor colouring. The 63% is not a stunt but the strength the style asks for, carrying the aromatics all the way through a drink instead of drowning in ice and lime.

Behind a bar it is a tool. A Daiquiri built on Rum Fire tastes nothing like one built on a light white rum: pineapple, banana and a saline edge, and it stays put. A small measure goes a long way.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Overripe banana and pineapple arrive at once, closely followed by something like varnish and freshly cut timber. Underneath sits a saline note, close to olives in brine.

    Palate

Oily and huge. Tropical fruit first, then a peppery warmth spreading out, and a mineral, almost chalky base. The alcohol is obvious, yet it carries rather than burns.

    Finish

Long and warm with the fruit hanging on. A dry, salty tone closes it out and keeps reminding you where it came from.

    Did you know?

Hampden Estate still keeps its muck pits alive, trenches of acidified organic matter drawn on to feed the fermentation. It is a nineteenth century technique that almost every other distillery abandoned long ago, and it is a large part of why the rum from here smells so much louder than anything else.

Don Q sticks to its dry, oak-driven style even when the spices come into play, avoiding the excessive sweetness many spiced rums otherwise fall into.

    Expert Description

Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced is a Puerto Rico Rum from Destilería Serrallés, aged 3 to 6 years and naturally flavoured with vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, bottled at 45%.

The rum builds on Don Q's classic cask-aged base rum, which is then naturally spiced without artificial colouring or flavouring. Unlike many other spiced rums that lean towards a pronounced sweetness, Don Q Oak Barrel Spiced holds onto a drier, more oak-driven character, where the spices support rather than dominate.

The result is a warm, spiced rum with a long, tannic finish that shows the distillery's focus on balance over pure sweetness.

    Tasting Notes

Don Q 151 was only the second overproof release ever from a Puerto Rico distillery, a robust powerhouse built to hold its own in a cocktail glass, not to be sipped straight from the bottle.

    Expert Description

Don Q 151 Overproof is a Puerto Rico Rum from Destilería Serrallés, a blend of light and dark rum aged a minimum of 3 years in used American oak casks and bottled at 75.5%.

The rum is one of very few overproof releases from Puerto Rico and was only the second of its kind from a local distillery when it launched. Despite the high strength, the nose is relatively tame for an overproof rum, with clear notes of vanilla, caramelised sugar and smoke, while the full intensity only reveals itself on the palate.

The rum isn't intended to be sipped neat, but as a powerful base in tiki and cocktail drinks.

  • Don Q Double Wood Vermouth Cask Finish Puerto Rico rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-19727953

Don Q keeps experimenting with cask finishing, this time finding inspiration in an Italian classic, where a sweet vermouth cask adds an entirely unexpected herbal note.

    Expert Description

Don Q Double Wood Vermouth Cask Finish is a Puerto Rico Rum from Destilería Serrallés, aged 5 to 8 years in American white oak and then finished 4 to 6 weeks in Italian Mancino Vermouth Vecchio casks, bottled at 40%.

After the base ageing, the rum is transferred to casks of Italian white oak that previously held Mancino Vermouth Vecchio, a sweet, herbal vermouth style. This short but pronounced finishing period adds notes of dark berries, cherry and a light herbal spice to Don Q's classic, oak-driven base profile.

The result is a rum that breaks with the more traditional sherry and port cask finishes in favour of something more unexpected and aromatically complex.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and honey, with a caramel core and a hint of dark fruit and cocoa.

    Palate

Cherry and raisins from the vermouth casks, alongside honey, dark chocolate and light molasses, followed by cinnamon and orange peel.

    Expert Description

Don Q Double Wood Sherry Cask Finish is a Puerto Rico Rum from Destilería Serrallés, aged 5 to 8 years in American white oak and then finished for a year in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 41%.

Dunder is the funky, fermented residue from previous distillations, which Providence deliberately blends into its rum to create a wild, unpolished intensity.

    Expert Description

Providence Dunder & Syrup is a Haiti Rum, an unaged white rum distilled from sugar cane juice, sugar cane syrup and dunder on a copper pot still, bottled at 56%.

The combination of fresh sugar cane juice, concentrated sugar cane syrup and dunder, the fermented residue from previous distillations, gives the rum a complex, funky character far removed from more restrained, industrially made white rums. This Haitian style draws on the wild, ester-rich tradition more commonly associated with Jamaica, but with its own distinct, unpolished character.

The result is an intense, oily rum with a rich tropical fruit expression and a pronounced, lingering funk.

The Versailles still is famous among rum enthusiasts for its extremely funky, ester-rich character, a legacy of the Demerara region's tradition of many different still types on a single distillery. The rum received a short finish in a sherry hogshead that previously held Scotch Whisky, adding a winey touch to its wild base profile.

With 30 years in cask, the edges have been smoothed slightly, but the rum remains unpredictable and full of character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Flamboyant and funky with pronounced esters, earthy tones and a winey touch from the sherry cask.

    Palate

Thick, wild and unruly, with clear influence from the old oak and dense tannins.

    Finish

Long and sharp, where the distillate's raw style shines through despite the heavy tannins.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197278488

Botran strips away all the colour from a rum that has genuinely aged for years, leaving a clear, easy-drinking result that surprises with its depth.

    Expert Description

Ron Botran Reserva Blanca is a Guatemala Rum from Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, blended from rum aged 3 to 8 years and bottled at 40%.

The rum matures in American whiskey casks in the Guatemalan highlands around Quetzaltenango, where the distillery sits at up to 2,300 metres above sea level. The relatively cool location gives a slower maturation than in many other rum-producing countries. After ageing, the rum is charcoal filtered to remove the colour, giving Reserva Blanca its clear appearance while retaining much of the aromatic complexity from the cask ageing.

The result is an unusually complex white rum that offers more than the clear colour immediately suggests.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and oak, with white grape and a hint of pineapple.

    Palate

Soft and explosive with fruity tones and an unusual complexity, along with a hint of grapefruit peel.

A journey from Barbados to Central Europe, where the rum gets its final, defining touch from a Spanish sherry cask thousands of kilometres from its country of origin.

    Expert Description

The Rum Factory Double Cask Collection Oloroso Cask is a Barbados Rum, aged on average 8 years in ex-bourbon casks and then finished 6-9 months in an Oloroso sherry cask, bottled at 40%.

The rum is distilled in Barbados, after which it is shipped to the Czech Republic, where The Rum Factory carries out the further finishing, a process known as "continental aging". After the initial 8 years in ex-bourbon casks, the rum is transferred to an Oloroso sherry cask for 6-9 months, adding a dry, nutty sherry character to the tropical Caribbean base profile. Double Cask Collection is The Rum Factory's range that experiments with different finishing casks to show how a single secondary cask can transform a rum.

The result is a rum that unites Barbados' tropical sweetness with the sherry cask's dry, spiced complexity.

    Expert description

Ærø Danish Solera Rum is a Solera Rum distilled and matured on Ærø and bottled at 48%.

The rum comes from Ærø Whisky, a small micro-distillery in the heritage-listed wash house behind the Handelsgården merchant's house in Ærøskøbing, founded by ship's captain Michael Nielsen in 2016. The rum is made from sugarcane molasses and matured in a Solera system, a method known from the sherry industry, where young rum is added at the top of the casks while older, more mature rum is drawn from the bottom. The casks previously held Oloroso and PX sherry from Spain, and only around 300 bottles of Solera Rum are bottled each year.

Even though Gran Reserva is Ron Esclavo's most approachable edition, it still builds on the house's full solera system, setting it apart from many other rums in the same price bracket, which are often aged in a far simpler way.

XO is the most intense expression of the solera at Ron Esclavo, where the mahogany-coloured rum promises a depth to match the weight of its name.

    Expert Description

Ron Esclavo XO is a Dominican Republic Rum, produced by Oliver & Oliver via the classic solera method and bottled at 42%.

The rum is aged in a combination of American and French oak casks, where the solera system, with gradual blending of younger and older rum across multiple ageing tiers, gives the bottle its aromatic depth. Ron Esclavo is produced by Oliver & Oliver, a respected Dominican producer known for working with traditional solera techniques, and the XO edition is the house's most intense cuvée, selected from the finest rum components in the solera.

The result is a mahogany-coloured rum with a syrupy, warm body and a long, silky finish.

  • Frosted bottle with ice-blue label and minimalist Nordic design
    Item no.: 2222786539-10101

The rum is Caribbean, but the bottle and name evoke Arctic ice – a contrast the Danish house Isfjord has deliberately cultivated.

    Expert description

Isfjord Premium Arctic Caribbean Rum is a Rum distilled on Saint Croix in the Caribbean and bottled at 44%.

Saint Croix is a former Danish colony with a long historical connection to rum production, and it is exactly this heritage the Danish house Isfjord draws on in this release. Although the name and label signal Arctic cold, the rum itself is entirely Caribbean in origin, creating an immediate contrast between its Nordic framing and its tropical content.
