    Expert Review

  • Glencadam PX Sherry Cask Finish bottle with dark golden whisky
    Item no.: 22227865479-12

Pedro Ximénez is the sweetest sherry there is. The grapes are dried in the sun before pressing, giving a wine so thick it is close to syrup. The casks then work quickly on a whisky — even one as bright as Glencadam’s.

    The expert's description

Glencadam PX Sherry Cask Finish is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American bourbon casks with a finishing period in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bottled at 46%.

The main maturation takes place in traditional American oak bourbon casks, where the bright distillery fruit gets room. Only then does the whisky go into selected PX casks, and the short finish is enough to lay dark fruit and chocolate in without erasing the starting point. The whisky is non-chill filtered and carries natural colour.

PX casks are the most powerful in the sherry family and are normally used sparingly. On a spirit like Glencadam’s — light, fruit-driven and without much weight of its own — it is a balancing act, and the finish is therefore kept short enough that the whisky is not run over.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dried fruits and dark chocolate, with spice and a rich sherry sweetness. Beneath the sweetness sits a brighter fruit note from the bourbon casks.

    Palate

Full and rich. Raisin, fig and dark chocolate, with a spice that builds towards the end. The 46% and the absence of chill filtration give a clearly oily mouthfeel.

    Finish

Medium to long. Sherry sweetness and cocoa drying slowly into a lightly nutty close.

  • Glencadam White Port Cask Finish bottle with pale golden whisky
    Item no.: 22227865479-11

White port is a rarity in the whisky world. Most port casks that end up in Scotland have held ruby or tawny, and those give dark fruit. White port pulls the other way — towards stone fruit, citrus and something almost floral.

    The expert's description

Glencadam White Port Cask Finish is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American ex-bourbon casks with a finishing period in white port casks from Portugal, bottled at 46%.

Main maturation takes place in American oak that previously held bourbon, and the finishing period runs in casks from white port. White port is made from white grapes and is brighter and fresher than the red varieties, which suits the Glencadam expression rather than competing with it. The whisky is non-chill filtered and carries natural colour.

The combination is unusual, even among the many cask finish releases out there. White port casks are rarely used for whisky, partly because they are hard to come by and partly because the effect is more subtle than sherry or red port — you need a spirit that can carry a light hand.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soft, tart fruits and stone fruits, with buttery orange cakes and vanilla custard.

    Palate

Delicate shades of sweet summer fruit and apple cakes, with raisins coated in honey and a trace of cedarwood. The texture is soft and round without turning heavy.

    Finish

Pleasant with a peppery warmth, well balanced by vanilla, the scent of oak and flavourful butter biscuits. Medium.

    Expert description

Maker's Mark Double Dip Red Sox 2018 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky is a 100 cl special bottling with an extra, double-dipped wax seal, created to mark the Boston Red Sox' 2018 season, bottled at 45%. Maker's Mark was founded in 1953, when Bill Samuels Sr. bought the old Burks' Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. His wife Margie created the entire brand identity — the name, the square bottle and the hand-dipped red wax seal, still hand-dipped on every bottle today. Bill Samuels wanted to create a softer bourbon than the typical rye-based styles of the day and replaced rye with red winter wheat in the mash bill. The distillery was listed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1980.

    Expert description

Rebel Yell 100 Proof Cabernet Sauvignon Barrels Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's wheated bourbon finished in cabernet sauvignon barrels, bottled at 50%. Rebel Yell was created in 1936 by Louisville's then-mayor Charles R. Farnsley to mark the 100th anniversary of the original Weller brand, with roots back to the Stitzel-Weller distillery of 1849. From the start, the brand used a wheated mash bill, giving it a softer, rounder character than a typical rye-based bourbon. After Stitzel-Weller closed in the early 1970s, the brand was acquired by Luxco, and since 2018 Rebel Yell has been distilled at the family's own distillery, Lux Row Distillers, in Bardstown, Kentucky.

    Item no.: 22227865388-321-2

A classic has had a fresh coat of paint. Highland Park 12 Years Old remains the distillery's most accessible dram, but in 2024 it got both a new design and a polished profile that still holds the same balance of sweetness and smoke that made it a fixture.

    Expert Description

Highland Park 12 Years Old (2024 Re-Design) is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The whisky is a masterful balancing act between sweetness and smoke, with vivid notes of Seville oranges and heather honey unfolding into layers of spiced fruitcake, before finishing with a gentle touch of Orcadian peat smoke. The 2024 redesign doesn't change the whisky's fundamental character, but marks an update to the bottle's visual look.

It makes for a versatile introduction to Highland Park's style — accessible enough for every day, yet complex enough to enjoy on its own.

  • Bowmore 9 Year Islay Single Malt Whisky bourbon sherry honey peat smoke discontinued
    Item no.: 2226699-53

Nine years is not long, but this is Islay — and Bowmore at that. It gives you a whisky that tastes more mature than most 9-year-olds from anywhere else. Smoke, coast and a layer of honey that needs no more time to convince.

    Expert's description

Bowmore 9 Year is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 40%. A discontinued bottling from the distillery on the shores of Loch Indaal — a shorter, more youthful take on Bowmore's characteristic profile. Matured in carefully selected bourbon and sherry casks in the iconic No. 1 Vaults, which sit partially below sea level. The maritime climate leaves its mark here: salty air, stable temperatures and the constant presence of the Atlantic. As an Islay whisky from the island's oldest distillery, Bowmore 9 Year carries the characteristic balance between peat smoke and sweetness — just in a lighter register than the older expressions. An interesting tasting experience for those who want to see what Bowmore does with younger casks.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and open with peat, honey and a touch of caramel. Sea salt present behind a light fruity note.

    Taste

  • Glendronach 12 Year Old bottle in the new 2024 label design
    Item no.: 22227865458-121-122

The label is new, the whisky is the same. Glendronach reworked the whole core range in mid-2024, and the 12 year old was among the first to get the new look. The contents were not changed — only the frame around them.

    The expert's description

Glendronach 12 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in Spanish Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 43%.

The whisky matures for over twelve years in a mix of the two sherry types. PX contributes raisin, fig and dark syrup, while oloroso lays in nuts and dry fruit, and the combination of the two is the very basis of the Glendronach house style. The casks come from the bodegas of Andalucía.

The 2024 redesign was more than a new label. Under Rachel Barrie the whole core range — 12, 15 and 18 years — was given a shared visual identity meant to put the sherry casks at the centre of the presentation. The 12 year old is the entry to the run and the release most people meet first.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisin and fig first, with dark syrup from the PX casks. Behind that sit walnut and dried orange from the oloroso, plus a layer of warm spice.

    Palate

Full and sherry-sweet. Dried fruit, nuts and dark chocolate, with a spiced middle and a touch of oak. The 43% holds the whisky together without making it hard.

    Finish

Blackpitts is the Dublin neighbourhood where the Teeling family once distilled whiskey back in the 1800s. Big Smoke Cask Strength revives the smoky side of that legacy at full cask strength.

    Expert Review

Teeling Blackpitts Big Smoke Cask Strength is a Peated Irish Single Malt Whiskey matured in Bourbon and Sauternes casks, bottled at 56.5%.

The whiskey is double distilled from heavily peated malt, a style rarely associated with Irish whiskey, and bottled at cask strength with no water added. The combination of peated malt and sweet French Sauternes casks creates a fully smoky whiskey experience, where the concentrated strength brings out both the smoke and the sweetness.

    Tasting Notes

  • Glencadam Reserva Andalucia bottle with warm amber whisky
    Item no.: 059763-615-1033

The name points to Andalucía, where the sherry comes from. It is one of the few places in the world where casks are still produced specifically for the whisky industry, and Glencadam has brought oloroso from there to finish this release.

    The expert's description

Glencadam Reserva Andalucia is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky built from sherry and bourbon casks with a finishing period in oloroso casks from Andalucía, bottled at 46%.

The build is different from the other finish releases. Here sherry casks are selected from the Glencadam warehouses and married with bourbon casks before the whole batch gets its finishing period in oloroso. That gives a more thoroughgoing sherry character than a straight finish would. The whisky is non-chill filtered and carries natural colour.

Oloroso is the dry sherry type. It matures in contact with air and develops nuts, dried fruit and a firm bitterness rather than the syrupy sweetness of PX. On the fruity Glencadam spirit that gives a balance between the brightness of the house and the depth of the sherry.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Rich sherry with sultanas and sweet spice, over a base note of bright Glencadam fruit. There are nuts and dried apricot behind.

    Palate

Full and sherry-forward. Dried fruit, nuts and spice, with the distillery fruitiness as a counterweight. The balance between the two is the whole point of the release.

    Finish

Medium to long. Nuts and dried fruit ebbing away into a dry, lightly spiced close.

  • Cardhu Gold Reserve Speyside single malt bottle in golden design
    Item no.: 059763-615-996

There is no age on the label, and that is deliberate. Gold Reserve is about what toasted wood does to Cardhu's honey, not about how many winters have passed.

    Expert description

Cardhu Gold Reserve Cask Selection is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in toasted oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The casks were chosen for their toast rather than their age. Toasted oak draws out caramel and baked fruit, and that is exactly what lifts Cardhu's pale, honeyed core into something deeper. The result is a malt with more dark chocolate and ripe orchard fruit than the 12 year old, but with the same soft mouthfeel. Without an age statement the distillery is free to pick casks by flavour rather than by calendar.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Baked apple and honey first, then caramel and a warm, toasted note from the wood. A light floral sweetness sits behind.

    Palate

Soft and round. Caramel, ripe pear, honey and a touch of dark chocolate. The toast brings a dry warmth towards the end that keeps the sweetness from turning dull.

    Finish

Short to medium, soft and lightly spiced, with cocoa and malt at the close.

Toasting and charring are not the same thing. A toasted cask is heated slowly so the sugars in the wood caramelise, while a charred cask gets a blackened layer inside. Cardhu uses toasting to pull out sweetness rather than smoke.

From Virginia's first legal distillery since Prohibition comes a rye that honours the state's whiskey roots.

    Expert description

Catoctin Creek Single Barrel Roundstone Virginia Rye Whisky is an American rye whisky, bottled at 40%. Catoctin Creek was founded in 2009 by Scott and Becky Harris and was the first legal distillery since Prohibition in Purcellville, Loudoun County, Virginia. Roundstone Rye, the distillery's flagship, is made from 100% rye, grown locally, milled, fermented and distilled on site in copper pot stills. Virginia is often considered the birthplace of American whiskey, as rye whiskey was distilled here as far back as Jamestown in 1607, long before bourbon became Kentucky's signature spirit.

    Tasting notes

618 steps lead up to the rock of Skellig Michael, where monks once built their monastery high above the Atlantic. That number has given its name to Ireland's only distillery on the Ring of Kerry.

    Expert Review

Skellig Six18 Step Collection Limited Edition is an Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey matured in three cask types, bottled at 43%.

The whiskey is the first expression from Skellig Six18 Distillery in Cahersiveen, County Kerry, and the first Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey with a peated profile, inspired by the Atlantic peatlands and the maritime history along the Skellig Coast. It is mashed from both malted and unmalted barley and triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, giving it the silky structure the style is known for. The distillery is housed in a former dry dock, from which locals and visitors once sailed out to Skellig Michael.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh maritime peat meets young grain and a touch of citrus.

  • Elements of Islay Cask Edit bottle with apothecary label from Elixir Distillers
    Item no.: 059763-615-530

Some smoky whiskies demand that you take a position immediately. Cask Edit is not one of them. It beds the smoke down in something soft and lets you decide how far into it you want to go.

    The expert description

Elements of Islay Cask Edit is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 46%.

Where the rest of the range splits by cask type, bourbon on one side and sherry on the other, Cask Edit is where the two meet. Elixir Distillers has built it from smoky malts drawn from several Islay distilleries and let both American oak and sherry wood leave their mark. The bourbon casks give vanilla and body, the sherry casks sweetness and dark fruit, and the smoke runs through all of it without taking charge.

The result is the most approachable release in the range and a sensible place to begin if Islay is still unfamiliar ground. The 46% is chosen so the whisky has enough body to take a drop of water, and it is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soft peat smoke and sea spray, a light mineral edge, and vanilla, citrus and pale fruit behind it.

    Palate

Well balanced. Smoke and ash meet caramel, candied fruit and malt, with a discreet sherry sweetness as counterweight.

    Item no.: 059763-615-522

Same distillation day as its sister release, but half a year longer in wood and a different pair of bourbon barrels. Small differences that end up giving two whiskies you could tell apart blindfolded.

    The expert's description

Benrinnes 2008/2022 Signatory Vintage 13 years is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in Bourbon Barrels and bottled at 43 %.

Cask no. 800308 and 800309 were filled on 18 September 2008 and emptied on 7 February 2022. The whisky carries its natural colour and is bottled at 43 %, the strength Signatory use for their more approachable range.

Benrinnes sits in Speyside, but Signatory chose the Highland designation for this label — both are legal, because Speyside lies geographically within the Highland region. Under the label is the same heavy, worm tub cooled spirit the distillery has produced since its rebuild in the 1950s.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Toasted grain, caramel and ripe pears. A faintly salted note in the background makes the nose less sweet than the colour suggests.

    Palate

Malty and dry with vanilla, walnut and baked apple. The oak is more evident than in the 12 year old, and there is more bite in the middle.

    Finish

Long and dry with toasted malt, a hint of dark chocolate and a nutty aftertaste.

  • Glen Ord 13 Year Old Signatory Vintage bottle with pale golden whisky
    Item no.: 059763-615-521

Glen Ord is one of those distilleries most European whisky drinkers never meet officially. The official single malt is called Singleton and sells mainly in Asia. To taste the spirit closer to home, the route runs through the independent bottlers.

    The expert's description

Glen Ord 2008/2022 Signatory Vintage 13 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from two hogsheads, bottled at 46%.

The casks were filled on 7 October 2008 and emptied on 6 January 2022 — hogsheads number 318687 and 318690, married into one bottling, non-chill filtered and with no added colour. The 46% is Signatory’s standard choice for its unfiltered bottlings, and on a thirteen year old spirit from used hogsheads it is a sensible strength: enough to hold the texture, not enough to drown it.

Glen Ord sits at Muir of Ord on the Black Isle north-west of Inverness and has been distilling since 1838, on land that belonged to the MacKenzies of Ord. The spirit is relatively full and malty for a Highland whisky, and hogsheads with no sherry involvement let precisely that cereal core stand forward.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt and cornfield first, then pear and a trace of heather honey. There is a dry, almost floury note that is typical of Glen Ord from used casks.

    Palate

Firm and malty. Barley, apple and pale caramel, with a dryness mid-palate and a hint of toast. Not sweet, more cereal-led and tighter than most Speyside whiskies of the same age.

    Finish

Medium. Malt, a dry oak note and a final touch of white pepper.

  • Akashi Blue Label Blended Japanese Whisky 70 cl 40%
    Item no.: 059763-615-507

Salt hangs in the air over the Akashi Strait, and the ferries have been drawing their lines across the water for as long as anyone can remember. Sake has been brewed on this shore since 1888. The whisky arrived almost as an afterthought and simply stayed — still shaped by the house around it, by small stills and by a toji's hand on the process.

    The expert's description

Akashi Blue Label Blended Japanese Whisky is a Blended Japanese Whisky matured in American white oak shochu casks and finished in sherry casks and bourbon casks, bottled at 40%.

Behind the bottle sits Eigashima Shuzo in the town of Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, better known in whisky circles as White Oak Distillery. The house was granted its whisky licence back in 1919, but only put it to serious use in the mid-1960s when the first small pot stills went in. Whisky is still only part of the year for them: sake through the winter, shochu in spring, whisky in June and July.

Those small stills matter. A smaller pot produces a spirit lower in fusel alcohols, which makes the new make gentler from the outset. That is why Akashi can get away with shorter maturation without the whisky tasting raw.

The cask history is the unusual part. The blend of malt and grain whisky first rests in American white oak casks that previously held shochu — that is where the dry, faintly herbal thread comes from. After that it spends time in sherry casks and bourbon casks, which layer vanilla, dried fruit and spice on top. Blue Label is a permanent part of the Akashi range and carries no age statement.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Orange peel and marmalade first, then honey and vanilla. Warm oak sits behind it with a small scattering of white pepper.

    Palate

Ginger, cinnamon and black pepper up front. Toasted oak follows, with dried apricots and a citrus brightness. A faint wisp of smoke in the background — closer to the smell of a bonfire than to peat.

    Finish

Long for the strength. Spicy and sweet at the same time, with dry oak lingering at the very end.

  • Annandale Storyman 2nd Edition bottle, Blended Scotch Whisky from Annandale Distillery
    Item no.: 059763-615-214

Some whiskies are made to be analysed. This one is made to be shared. The name says it plainly: Storyman, the bottle that sits in the middle of the table while somebody finishes telling it.

    The Expert's Description

Annandale Storyman 2nd Edition is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 46% by Annandale Distillery. It was created by the distillery and personally selected by the actor and storyteller James Cosmo, and the second edition carries on from the first.

A blend mixes malt whisky with grain whisky, and the result is usually softer and more approachable than a single malt. At 46% and without chill filtration, however, this sits higher than most standard blends, which are typically bottled at 40%. That gives more body and a clearer texture without giving up the approachability.

Annandale sits at Annan in Dumfriesshire in the far south of Scotland and has been running again since 2014 after nearly a century of silence. Alongside the two single malt ranges, Man O’ Sword and Man O’ Words, the distillery also stands behind Storyman.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Malt and honey first, with baked apple and a touch of vanilla behind. There is a light cereal sweetness running through it, the signature of the blend, and a clean straightforward aroma with no sharp edges.

    Palate

Soft and round. Caramel, malt and bright fruit open, then a mild spiced warmth and a light nutty note. The 46% gives more body and length than you would expect from a blend, so there is something to hold on to.

    Finish

Medium length. Malt, honey and a dry cereal note that lets go cleanly without bitterness.

    Investment Potential

As another bottling from the closed Port Dundas distillery, this 14-year-old release represents a dwindling, non-renewable stock, giving it some appeal for grain whisky collectors.

    Did You Know?

Grain whisky like Port Dundas is traditionally used mainly for blends, but independent bottlings like this one offer a rare glimpse of how grain spirit tastes entirely on its own.

  • Meikle Tòir The Chinquapin One bottle with golden peated whisky
    Item no.: 059763-615-143

Chinquapin is an American oak species you rarely encounter in Scotch whisky – at Meikle Tòir it becomes a surprisingly spicy frame around the distillery's smoky style.

    Expert description

Meikle Tòir 5 Year Old The Chinquapin One is a peated Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in virgin oak casks made from chinquapin oak, bottled at 48%.

Meikle Tòir is GlenAllachie's peated sister series, launched in 2023. The name means "the big pursuit" in Scottish Gaelic. The whisky undergoes a fermentation of around 160 hours, markedly longer than usual, giving the spirit a fruitiness that plays off the peat smoke. The peat comes from the Scottish mainland and sits at around 35 PPM.

The Chinquapin One is named after the American oak species chinquapin, used for the virgin oak casks in this release. Chinquapin oak is rare in Scotch whisky production and known for imparting a more intense and spicy character than common American white oak.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers peated smoke alongside sweet vanilla and freshly sawn wood, with a spicy undercurrent of coconut and lightly toasted caramel from the chinquapin oak.

    Palate

The palate combines smoke with a pronounced sweetness of vanilla and butterscotch, while the oak's spice gives a touch of pepper and dry wood structure.

    Finish

The finish is smoky and lightly sweet, with a dry, spiced ending where the oak lingers long after the smoke has faded.
