The difference lies in the words, "blend" and "single". The explanation is simple: Single malt whiskey consists solely of barley from one particular distillery, where blended malt whisky is made of several single malt whiskies which are blended together. Single malt + single malt = blended malt. Blended malt whisky often consists of far more than simply two different whiskies, but it is always a blended malt whisky as soon as there is more than one single malt whisky. In the past, the classification used was, "vatted malt whisky", but "blended malt whisky" is the most common term used today.
