  • Aber Falls 2021 Release Single Malt Welsh Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197279955

The first single malt distilled in North Wales in 120 years, named after the waterfall that supplies its water.

    Expert description

Aber Falls 2021 Release is a Welsh Single Malt Whisky, bottled at 40%. Aber Falls was founded in 2017 in the village of Abergwyngregyn in North Wales, in a 6,000-square-metre 19th-century building that was originally a slate works, then a margarine factory during the world wars, and later a warehouse depot for Halewood International, who led its restoration into a distillery in 2017. Aber Falls marked the first single malt distilled in North Wales in 120 years. The whisky is made entirely from Welsh barley and water from the nearby Aber Falls waterfall, located within the boundaries of Snowdonia National Park. In 2023, Welsh single malt achieved official Geographical Indication (GI) status, recognising it as a quality product with a distinct style.

    Item no.: 22266777799-6542

A milder strength and a bigger bottle of Annandale's raw, unaged new make.

    Expert description

Annandale Rascally New Make Malt Spirit is the distillery's unaged new make spirit in a 50 cl bottle, bottled at 46%. 'Rascally Liquor' is the name of Annandale's new make spirit, named after a quote by the Scottish poet Robert Burns, who described whisky as exactly that — 'rascally liquor'. It was first launched on Burns Night in 2015. Annandale Distillery was founded in 1836 as one of Scotland's first legal distilleries, but closed in 1918 while owned by none other than Johnnie Walker. The distillery lay derelict for nearly a century, until Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church read about it in the book 'Scotch Missed: Lost Distilleries of Scotland', tracked down the ruined building, bought the site in 2007 and reopened the distillery in 2014 after extensive restoration. The distillery produces two main expressions: the unpeated Man O'Words and the peated Man O'Sword, continuing the distillery's historic tradition of smoky whisky.

  • Ardnamurchan AD Miniature gift set with four bottles of Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 222333-99963

Four bottles, four cask stories, the same spirit. It is the easiest way to understand what a cask actually does to whisky, because everything else is held constant and only the wood changes.

    The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan AD Miniature 2024 is a gift set of four Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in 5 cl format, bottled between 46.8% and 50%. The set gathers the distillery’s core expression and three cask variants, and all four are neither chill filtered nor coloured.

The first bottle is AD/, the house standard with 65% bourbon casks and 35% sherry casks. The second is the sherry cask expression, the third the rum cask, and the fourth a single cask Sauternes. Between them they cover the whole span from dry bourbon wood to sweet wine cask.

Ardnamurchan sits at Glenbeg on the westernmost mainland peninsula in Scotland and has been distilling since July 2014. The distillery makes both peated and unpeated malt, and both styles go into the releases.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

AD/ opens with orchard fruit, beach pebbles and eucalyptus. The sherry cask gives Murray mint and smoked bacon. The rum cask brings salted cashews and vanilla extract, and the Sauternes offers nectarines and sweet pastry.

    Palate

A common thread runs across all four: tobacco leaves, salt water and a touch of marzipan from the spirit itself. On top sit the contributions of the wood, sticky spare ribs from the sherry, coastal breeze from the rum and rich wax from the Sauternes cask.

    Finish

Different from bottle to bottle, but over the same saline maritime floor. That shared denominator is exactly what the set makes it possible to hear.

Scotland's national poet has lent his name to several whiskies over the years, but few carry as close a connection to whisky history as this Arran edition.

  • Bell's Original Blended Scotch Whisky litre bottle with red seal
    Item no.: 22227865397-245

A litre of Bell's is not a bottle you buy for the display cabinet. It gets bought for the house, put at the back of the cupboard and pulled out when someone drops by. That is its function, and it has held it for decades without complaint.

    The expert's description

Bell's Original 100 cl is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40 %.

Original was previously called Specially Selected and took its current name in 2008. The blend is built around Blair Athol in Pitlochry, regarded as the home distillery of the house, supported by malt from several other distilleries and by grain whisky, which supplies the light, round texture.

The litre format is a practical decision more than a collector decision. The larger bottle is still around, mainly in airports and with retailers who have the shelf space, and it is meant for households where the whisky gets drunk rather than kept.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light and cereal led with vanilla, apple and a dry malt note. A little caramel sits underneath.

    Palate

Soft and simple with honey, cereal and a hint of nut. No edges, no surprises, and that is deliberate.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972726

Blue Label arrived in 1999 and quickly picked up a nickname among the distillery staff: bottle of the month, the one that came with the pay slip. It is rarely a bad recommendation when the people who make the whisky take it home themselves.

    The expert's description

Dew of Ben Nevis Blue Label is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40 %.

Dew of Ben Nevis is the blend range of the distillery, with Blue Label sitting as the lightest and sweetest expression. It differs from Special Reserve and Supreme Selection by aiming at accessibility rather than weight, and it was introduced in 1999.

The blend combines malt whisky from Ben Nevis with grain whisky, and the distillery in Fort William handles both production and composition. It is not common for a single distillery to blend and bottle its own blend under its own name as well.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light and sweet with vanilla, pale cereal and a touch of honey.

    Palate

Soft and simple with caramel and malt. The sweetness dominates and there are no sharp edges along the way.

    Item no.: 22227865397-76

Some whiskies shout to be heard. Then there is Black Bottle, which slips quietly into the room, lays a trail of smoke across the table and lets everyone else wonder where that depth came from.

    Expert description

Black Bottle New Version is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

New Version refers to the relaunch, when the brand returned to black glass, the recipe was tightened and the smoky Islay character was pushed back to the centre. It is a blend where malt and grain work together and where smoke is structural rather than decorative.

The ambition from the start has been to let every Scottish whisky region speak in the same bottle, with Islay as the note that holds it all together. The result is an approachable blend that works as an everyday dram and as a gentle way into smoky whisky.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soft peat smoke settles first, followed by malty sweetness, a brush of vanilla and a light maritime saltiness in the background.

    Palate

Round and malty with caramel and honey, seasoned by pepper and a steady, earthy smoke that rolls across the palate without taking over.

    Finish

Medium and warm with a gentle ash smoke that fades out alongside a last note of malty sweetness.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280096

Six small bottles, six Scottish regions. This is about as close to a tour of Scotland as you can get without leaving the kitchen table, and Douglas Laing has packed it into a box worth leaving out on display.

    The expert description

Douglas Laing Remarkable Regional Malts is a set of six Blended Malt Scotch Whisky in 5 cl bottles, bottled between 46% and 46.8%.

The range is Douglas Laing’s attempt to translate the geography of Scottish whisky into six bottles. Each release draws malt from a single area, so the difference between a Lowland and an Islay becomes something you taste your way towards rather than read about. All six are bottled at a minimum of 46% and without chill filtration.

The set holds The Epicurean from the Lowlands at 46.2%, Timorous Beastie from the Highlands at 46.8%, Scallywag from Speyside at 46%, The Gauldrons from Campbeltown at 46.2%, Rock Island from the Islands at 46.8% and Big Peat from Islay at 46%.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The range is the entire point. From the bright citrus and cut grass of The Epicurean, through the sherry sweetness of Scallywag, to the tar, smoked ham and sea salt of Big Peat.

    Palate

Timorous Beastie gives honey and heather, The Gauldrons salted caramel and apple, Rock Island a soft smoke with seaweed underneath. Tasted side by side, regional character stops being an abstraction.

    Finish

Short and clean at the pale end, long and sooty at the smoky one. Order matters here. Begin with Big Peat and the rest of the evening tastes of peat.

  • Drambuie whisky liqueur bottle with Scottish heather honey and Isle of Skye malt
    Item no.: 22227865397-299

A recipe said to have travelled with a prince in flight, an inn on Skye and a Gaelic phrase about a dram that satisfies. Drambuie has had almost three hundred years to embroider its own story, and it has used them well.

    The expert description

Drambuie is a Scotch Whisky Liqueur built on malt whisky from the Isle of Skye, sweetened with heather honey and seasoned with herbs and spices, bottled at 40%.

The story starts in July 1746. Prince Charles Edward Stuart was in flight after the defeat at Culloden, and on his way to the Isle of Skye he was helped by John MacKinnon of Clan MacKinnon. In return, the prince is said to have handed MacKinnon the recipe for his personal liqueur. By 1873 it could be had at The Broadford Hotel on Skye, where guests called it an dram buidheach, the dram that satisfies. The Ross family registered the name as a trademark twenty years later, and The Drambuie Liqueur Company was founded in 1914.

In 1916 Drambuie became the first liqueur admitted to the House of Lords, and it reached Buckingham Palace the following year. Prohibition in the United States and the Second World War came close to killing the brand off, but it survived. Drambuie is owned today by William Grant & Sons.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Orange peel and honey first, then aniseed, saffron and a dry herbal edge that keeps the sweetness in check.

    Palate

Oily and full. Honey, toffee and citrus settle first, then the malt whisky pushes through with spice and a clean acidity that lifts the whole thing.

    Finish

Warm and long with nutmeg, clove and a final bitter orange note.

The strictest US whiskey standard, met by one of Kentucky's best-selling bourbon names.

    Expert description

Evan Williams Bottled-In-Bond 100 Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey follows the 1897 US Bottled-in-Bond Act, requiring the whiskey to be distilled in one season by one distiller at one distillery, aged at least four years, and bottled at exactly 50%. Evan Williams is named after the Welshman who, according to tradition, opened Kentucky's first commercial distillery on the banks of the Ohio River in 1783. When the Shapira brothers founded Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown in 1935, shortly after Prohibition ended, they chose to honour Williams' name for their flagship bourbon in 1957. Today Evan Williams is the second best-selling Kentucky Straight Bourbon brand in the world, second only to Jim Beam, and is made from a mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley.

  • Famous Grouse Blended Scotch Whisky large bottle with red grouse label
    Item no.: 22227865425-10

Some bottles are bought for a particular evening. This one is bought because it needs to be there. The litre bottle is Famous Grouse in household format, the one that keeps on standing when guests turn up unannounced.

    The expert description

Famous Grouse 1 Litre is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40% in a 100 cl bottle.

The blend was created in Perth in 1896 by Matthew Gloag, who named it after the red grouse. The bird became the company mark, the whisky was known locally as Gloag’s Grouse, and when the family incorporated Matthew Gloag & Son in 1905 they made the nickname official: The Famous Grouse. The brand left the family in 1970 and has been owned by William Grant & Sons since July 2025.

The style has not moved much. Malt whisky from Scottish distilleries, with Highland Park historically among those giving the blend its character, is bound together with grain whisky into a soft and rounded blend with no sharp edges. The litre bottle holds the same whisky as the standard size and speaks to those who go through it steadily.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Harmonious and calm. Dried fruit and honey first, then vanilla, nuts and a touch of citrus.

    Palate

Unusually soft and round with clear fruit. Ripe undertones and a lightly spiced edge that keeps it from turning dull.

    Finish

Short to medium, clean and lightly sweet with malt at the close.

The red grouse on the label was not drawn by an advertising artist. The image came from Philippa Gloag, a daughter of the family, who painted the bird in the late 1800s. It has followed the bottle ever since and become one of the most recognisable marks in Scotch whisky.

  • Famous Grouse Blended Scotch Whisky bottle with red grouse on the label
    Item no.: 22227865425-7

In 1896 a whisky merchant in Perth needed a name for his new blend. He chose the bird out on the moor. A hundred and thirty years later it still stands on the label, and the whisky behind it has never felt any need to reinvent itself.

    The expert description

Famous Grouse is a Blended Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Matthew Gloag created the blend in Perth in 1896 and took the red grouse as his mark. Customers started asking for the famous grouse, and in 1905 the family took the hint and named it The Famous Grouse. The family sold up in 1970, and since July 2025 the brand has been owned by William Grant & Sons.

The recipe rests on malt whisky from Scottish distilleries, with Highland Park historically setting much of the tone, bound together with grain whisky. The malt delivers fruit and spice, the grain delivers the softness, and the balance between them is why the bottle has been the best selling blend in Scotland for decades.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Deep gold in the glass. A harmonious aroma of dried fruit and honey, with vanilla, nuts and citrus behind it.

    Palate

Exceptionally soft and round with a pleasing fruitiness. Beneath it sit ripe, lightly spiced undertones that give it more to work with than expected.

    Expert description

Fireball Cinnamon & Whisky Flavour Liqueur is a Canadian-based liqueur flavoured with cinnamon, bottled at 33%. The product was originally launched in the 1980s by Seagram as one of several flavoured schnapps, with the manufacturer's own origin story crediting a Canadian bartender trying to warm up after an Arctic cold snap. In 1989, the Sazerac Company bought the rights to the formula and initially branded it Dr. McGillicuddy's Fireball Whisky. In 2007 the product was rebranded to the Fireball Cinnamon Whisky most people know today, and a combination of social media, bartender-focused marketing and word of mouth sent sales from $1.9 million in 2011 to $61 million in 2013, briefly overtaking both Jameson and Patrón.

  • Flatnöse Blended Scotch Whisky bottle from Islay Boys
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197278351

The islands along the west coast of Scotland were governed from the sea, not from land. That is the world the Flatnöse name points back to, and the whisky has been given the same direct character to carry.

    The expert description

Flatnöse Blended Scotch Whisky is a lightly peated blend bottled at 43% in small batch.

Where the Islay Boys blended malt sticks to pure malt whisky, this release is a proper blend with both malt and grain. The grain gives softness and a cereal sweetness that malt alone does not deliver, and the smoke therefore has a rounder base to stand on.

The name is taken from Ketill Flatnöse, the Norse chieftain who in the late 800s was king over the islands along the west coast. Bottling happens in small batch and without chill filtration, so the contents can vary a little from run to run.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt and sweetness first, with an appealing note of smoke settling in underneath.

    Palate

Pleasingly smoky, where pepper steps clearly forward alongside the smoke. The cereal sweetness sits below and holds it together.

    Finish

Medium and dry with smoke, pepper and a final malty sweetness.

    Did you know?

Very few blends are bottled without chill filtration. The process removes the compounds that can turn whisky hazy at low temperature, and it is used on almost every bottle at this level because haze gets mistaken for a fault. Islay Boys chose to skip it and explain why instead.

    Item no.: 22227865412-1

Five yeast strains, two mash bills, ten recipes — Four Roses' core range is the sum of the most complex bourbon approach in Kentucky.

    Expert description

Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the flagship of the core range, a blend of several of the house's ten recipes, bottled at 40%. Four Roses was founded in 1888 by Paul Jones Jr. The story behind the name has it that Jones proposed to a Southern belle who said yes while wearing a corsage of four roses — hence the brand's name. The current distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, was built in 1910 in an unusual Spanish Mission style and has been on the US National Register of Historic Places since 2000.

Four Roses is known in the bourbon world for using no fewer than 10 different recipes, combining the house's five yeast strains with two different mash bills. Each yeast strain brings its own character — from spicy and floral to fruity and herbal — giving the distillery an unusually broad flavour palette to blend from.

Some bottles tell you everything about where they came from. This one tells you nothing, and lets you spend the time on what is in the glass instead.

    The expert description

Glen Andrew is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with clear sherry influence, bottled at 40%.

The whisky comes from an undisclosed Highland distillery. It is an entirely ordinary arrangement where a distillery sells casks on without wanting its name on the label, and the buyer bottles them under a brand name of their own.

The result is an approachable and uncomplicated single malt that has become a standing recommendation for anyone finding their way into the style. There is no smoke and there are no sharp edges, and 40% means it asks for neither water nor practice. The colour is deep gold and the sherry influence runs all the way through.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Baked apple and caramel first, with floral undertones and a lightly nutty sherry note behind.

    Palate

Soft and round with malt sweetness, light spice and a touch of oak. The mouthfeel is pleasant and balanced with no bite to it.

A distillery can have good reasons for not wanting to be named. Often it is about protecting the price of the house own bottlings, and just as often the casks were sold on in large parcels decades ago, long before anyone imagined single malt would become something people collected.

  • Glenfarclas 15 Year Old small 20 cl bottle with dark golden whisky
    Item no.: 505956-498796-648

Twenty centilitres is enough for four proper glasses. That is the amount where you can work out whether a whisky is for you without committing — and with a 15 year old that is a reasonable place to start.

    The expert's description

Glenfarclas 15 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in sherry casks and bottled at 46% in a 20 cl bottle.

The contents are the same as in the large release. The 46% is higher than in both the 10 and the 12 year old, and over fifteen years the sherry has had time to build a depth the younger releases do not reach. The small format makes no difference to the whisky — only to the quantity.

Glenfarclas carries age statements right up to forty years in its permanent range. That is unusual for a family-owned distillery, and it requires generations of restraint in selling off old casks. The 15 year old sits around the middle of that ladder.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Complex sherry notes with a touch of understated smoke, cream caramel and a hint of dried fruits such as dates and figs.

    Palate

Great body with elegant balance. Plenty of sweetness from the sherry casks, malty tones, roasted nuts and a light smoke. The 46% gives the whisky weight without making it sharp.

    Finish
