Some bottles tell you everything about where they came from. This one tells you nothing, and lets you spend the time on what is in the glass instead.

    The expert description

Glen Andrew is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with clear sherry influence, bottled at 40%.

The whisky comes from an undisclosed Highland distillery. It is an entirely ordinary arrangement where a distillery sells casks on without wanting its name on the label, and the buyer bottles them under a brand name of their own.

The result is an approachable and uncomplicated single malt that has become a standing recommendation for anyone finding their way into the style. There is no smoke and there are no sharp edges, and 40% means it asks for neither water nor practice. The colour is deep gold and the sherry influence runs all the way through.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Baked apple and caramel first, with floral undertones and a lightly nutty sherry note behind.

    Palate

Soft and round with malt sweetness, light spice and a touch of oak. The mouthfeel is pleasant and balanced with no bite to it.

    Finish

Medium with warmth and sweetness, and a final dry malty note.

    Did you know?

A distillery can have good reasons for not wanting to be named. Often it is about protecting the price of the house own bottlings, and just as often the casks were sold on in large parcels decades ago, long before anyone imagined single malt would become something people collected.

Frequently asked questions about Glen Andrew

Which distillery does Glen Andrew come from?

That is not disclosed. The whisky comes from a Highland distillery that does not want its name on the label, so the bottle is sold under the Glen Andrew brand name instead.

    What does it taste like?

Baked apple and caramel on the nose with floral undertones, soft and round on the palate with malt sweetness and light spice, and a medium finish of warmth and sweetness. There is no smoke.

Is it a good place to start with single malt?

Yes, and that is exactly what it is known for. The profile is mild and unpeated, the strength is low enough to be friendly, and the sherry influence gives it enough character not to be dull. See more in our Blended Scotch Whisky range for contrast.

Is there any smoke in it?

No. It is unpeated throughout. If peat smoke is what you are after, it lives in our range of Islay Whisky.

    What does sherry influence mean?

That the whisky has spent time in casks that previously held sherry. That is where the deep golden colour, the baked fruit and the nutty sweetness come from.

Does it work as an everyday whisky?

That is precisely what it was made for. It is direct enough for a glass after dinner without anyone having to set aside time to analyse it.

    Which glass suits it best?

At 40% the aroma is delicate, so a tulip-shaped glass does more for it than a wide tumbler. See our range of whisky glasses.
