He led an army for a prince, lost at Culloden and ended his days in exile in France. He never saw Scotland again. Nearly 280 years on, his name sits on a deep blue box, and inside you'll find green apple, fresh-cut hay and soft caramel.
Expert's Description
Lord Elcho Blended Scotch Whisky is a Blended Scotch Whisky made from malt and grain whisky and bottled at 40%.
It comes from Wemyss Malts in Edinburgh. The blend holds at least 40% malt whisky, with grain whisky making up the rest, and everything is distilled, aged, blended and bottled in Scotland. The Lord Elcho name began in 2012 as a 15 year old blend, and the version without an age statement followed in April 2014.
The man behind the name is David, Lord Elcho, born 1721 and died 1787. He was the eldest son of the 5th Earl of Wemyss and commander of Bonnie Prince Charlie's army. After the Jacobites were beaten at Culloden in 1746, he was exiled to France.
The bottle has picked up a fair few medals along the way: gold at The Scotch Whisky Masters in both 2014 and 2016, and silver at the International Spirits Challenge in the same years.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Fresh and lively, like a fruit salad of green apple, grape and pear. Freshly cut hay follows, then fragrant wood shavings with a touch of eucalyptus.
Palate
Full and soft, with waves of chewy caramel. A little ginger syrup brings warmth and spice. It's lovely neat, but a splash of water pushes the spice forward and brings out red fruit like pomegranate.
Finish
Dry and long, with crushed Brazil nuts.
