The whiskey was originally created by Medley Distilling Company in 1945 and came under Heaven Hill's ownership in 1993, after changing hands several times along the way, including through Renfield Importers and Glenmore Distillery. Unlike most corn whiskeys, typically sold as unaged moonshine, Mellow Corn is aged for at least 4 years in used bourbon casks. The mash bill consists of at least 80% corn, supplemented with malted barley and rye, giving it a sweeter, softer profile than traditional bourbon. The distinctive bright yellow label has remained largely unchanged throughout the whiskey's lifespan.
