Spirit Drink

An In-Depth Explanation

Spirit Drink is a newly established category within the spirits industry, created to encompass certain types of spirits made from sugarcane with a sugar content exceeding 20 grams per liter. This category was introduced as a result of EU Regulation 2019/787, which aims to protect and regulate the designation of rum and other spirit products.

EU Regulation 2019/787:
EU Regulation 2019/787, which came into effect on May 25, 2021, sets forth rules and standards for the production, labeling, and presentation of spirits. The goal of this regulation is to ensure transparency and protect consumers from misleading information. A key aspect of this regulation is the definition of what can be labeled as rum. According to these rules, rum must not contain more than 20 grams of residual sugar per liter. This requirement was introduced to preserve the traditional character of rum and distinguish it from other sweeter spirit products.

Implications for Producers:
Prior to the implementation of EU Regulation 2019/787, popular rum brands such as Diplomatico, Ron Millonario, and Ron Zacapa would have been classified as rum even though their sugar content exceeded the now permitted limit. With the new rules in place, these brands have had to modify their recipes to reduce the sugar content in order to remain within the rum category's definition.

The Spirit Drink Category:
The Spirit Drink category now includes those spirit products that exceed the 20 grams of sugar per liter limit. This encompasses not only traditional rum brands that have chosen not to alter their recipes but also a variety of other products known for their sweet and spiced flavor profiles. Bottles such as AH Riise and various spiced rums now fall under this category. Consequently, the category is broad and includes a wide range of spirits that can no longer be classified as rum under the new EU rules.

Significance for Consumers:
For consumers, this regulation means a clearer understanding of what they are purchasing when they choose rum or a Spirit Drink. Rum is now guaranteed to have a lower sugar content, appealing to those seeking a more traditional and pure taste experience. Conversely, those who prefer sweeter and more complex flavor profiles can find their favorites in the Spirit Drink category.

Conclusion:
The new Spirit Drink category, resulting from EU Regulation 2019/787, represents a significant development in the spirits industry. It ensures that the designation of rum is preserved for products with lower sugar content while also providing space for the many sweeter spirit variants that remain popular among consumers. This creates a more transparent and accurate marketing of spirit products, benefiting both producers and consumers.

  • Canerock Jamaica Spiced Rum Spirit Drink bottle
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280107

It took ninety attempts to nail the right spice blend, and the result is a Jamaican high ester rum that's equal parts authentic and approachable.

    Expert Description

Canerock is a spiced Jamaica Rum-based Spirit Drink, distilled in pot and column stills at the Clarendon and Long Pond distilleries, partly finished in ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and flavoured with Madagascar vanilla, Jamaican ginger and coconut, bottled at 40%.

The base is genuine Jamaican high ester rum between 5 and 10 years old, giving Canerock a deeper, more authentic rum character than many other spiced rum products on the market. The addition of natural spices and flavourings means the drink is sold as a spirit drink rather than rum, however. Part of the blend is finished in sherry casks, adding rich sweetness and notes of raisin and cocoa.

The result is a warm, bakery-like drink with a pronounced Jamaican ester character underneath.

    Item no.: 059763-615-929

It was the brand's own ambassador in London who first discovered how well banana paired with Cargo Cult in cocktails - and bananas are hardly in short supply in the South Pacific.

    Expert description

Cargo Cult Banana Spiced is a spiced Rum from Australia, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 38%.

After Mario, Cargo Cult's brand ambassador in London, noticed how well banana complemented the rum in cocktails, the team spent six months experimenting to arrive at this release. The result is a balanced, dry spiced rum with a fully natural banana aroma and flavour - with no added sugar, so the rum's own character still shines through alongside the banana.

Cargo Cult is a small Australian rum brand that builds its rum from a blend of several Pacific islands and bottles it in small batches. Banana Spiced is one of three core variants in the range, alongside Navy Strength and Dry Spiced.

    Tasting notes

Rum from the Ramu River Valley in Papua New Guinea meets rum from the sunny island of Fiji - and to comply with Australia's strict rules, it is all spiced on a small vineyard in Orange, New South Wales.

    Expert description

Cargo Cult Dry Spiced is a spiced Rum from Australia, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 38.5%.

The rum combines matured rum from the South Pacific - from the Ramu River Valley in Papua New Guinea and from Fiji - spiced with cardamom, clove, cinnamon, ginger and vanilla. Because Australia's import and production rules are strict, the rum is blended and spiced on a small vineyard in Orange, New South Wales, then matured for up to three years in ex-bourbon casks under tropical heat.

It is precisely the absence of added sugar that sets Dry Spiced apart from many other spiced rum styles - the spices build the flavour without a layer of sweetness masking the rum's own character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Cardamom and clove with a hint of vanilla.

Cannonball is the name of this series from the French bottling house, and with a 12-month finish in peated Islay Whisky casks, edition number 8 fully lives up to the name's power.

    Expert Description

Compagnie des Indes Boulet de Canon No. 8 Spiced Panama Rom is a Panama & Nicaragua Rum, a blend mostly 3-5 years old with a touch of 8-year-old rum, bottled at 46%.

The Boulet de Canon series from French bottler Compagnie des Indes is characterised by whisky-cask finishing, and number 8 in the line spends 12 months in casks that previously held peated Islay Whisky. This gives this South American rum an unusual smoky, vegetal character, more reminiscent of an autumn walk through the forest than a classic Caribbean rum.

The result is a full-bodied, complex rum where smoke and vegetal notes meet classic rum sweetness in an unusual combination.

    Tasting Notes

    Expert description

Compagnie des Indes Boulet de Canon No. 7 Spiced With Smoky Aromas is a Spiced Rum infused with smoked jujube dates, cloves, pink pepper and guaiac wood, bottled at 46%.

The Boulet de Canon series, named after cannonballs as a nod to the British Navy and the smell of gunpowder, is French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes' spiced sideline to its pure single cask releases. Number 7 is built around smoked jujube dates and a secret spice blend, giving the rum a deep, almost grilled character, far from the sweet vanilla style often associated with spiced rum.

    Tasting notes

From the house of John Aylesbury comes this rum, which after its initial maturation in American white oak receives a final finish in casks that previously held the renowned French dessert wine Barsac.

    Expert Description

Corsario Reserve Cask is a Rum-based Spirit Drink in the Nicaraguan style, bottled at 40%.

The rum is built on a distillate in the Nicaraguan style, which is first matured in American white oak before being finished in Barsac casks, where the world-renowned French dessert wine was previously aged. This finish lends the rum a delicate sweetness and a hint of the honeyed, fruity tones for which Barsac wine is known.

    Tasting Notes

    Fruity, light and sweet.

    Palate

Honey, white peaches, apricots and vanilla in a soft, rounded palate.

  • Slim clear Cuba bottle with Dry Lemon label
    Item no.: 2229-101778

The rest of the family is about colour and sugar. Dry Lemon declines. Tart lemon over a clean vodka base, and not a great deal else, which is the entire reason it exists.

    Expert description

Cuba Dry Lemon is a Danish Vodka Spirit Drink from Spritfabrikken Danmark in Kolding, made with triple distilled vodka carrying a lightly tart lemon flavour and bottled at 30%.

It is the driest bottle in the range and was developed for people who do not want things too sweet. Where the strawberry and orange lean on boiled sweets, this one sits closer to the peel of a lemon, and the sugar has been turned down noticeably.

The base is vodka distilled three times, and because the strength is set at 30% the label reads spirit drink made with vodka. The producer recommends it chilled, shaken with ice or lengthened with soda or juice, and it is built for long drinks rather than for sipping neat.

In the glass it behaves like a mild vodka with the lemon already added: you do not need to bring nearly as much acid of your own. The house suggestions are a Lemon Drop or a Tom Collins, but it also works with plain sparkling water and a slice of lemon.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh lemon peel first, bright and light. Behind it sits a mild sweetness and a trace of elderflower.

    Palate

Tart and crisp with the lemon up front. Sweetness is present but takes up less room than in the rest of the range, and the vodka base gives structure without sharpness.

    Finish

Short and dry. The citrus peel lingers for a moment, and there is no syrupy tail behind it.

  • Slim clear Cuba bottle holding bright blue orange spirit
    Item no.: 22227865479-10132

Pour it out and you get blue. Taste it and you get orange. Cuba Orange is one of the few bottles where colour and flavour deliberately disagree, and that is exactly why it ends up in so many drinks.

    Expert description

Cuba Orange is a Danish Vodka Spirit Drink from Spritfabrikken Danmark in Kolding, made with triple distilled vodka flavoured with sweet oranges and bottled at 30%.

The clear blue colour is not a mistake but the whole point. It makes it easy to build drinks that look like something without keeping blue curacao on the shelf. Mixed with clear soda the glass turns turquoise, and with orange juice it lands somewhere between green and brown.

On the palate this is ripe orange rather than orange peel. The sweetness is obvious, the acidity is held back, and the base is vodka distilled three times. The strength of 30% is why the label reads spirit drink made with vodka instead of vodka.

The house classic is called Isbjørn and consists of Cuba Orange and Sprite, while Viper uses lemon soda. The producer also points to a less obvious route: a splash in coffee, topped with whipped cream and grated chocolate.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet orange straight away, more juice than peel. Behind it sits a light candied edge and a touch of sugar.

    Palate

Juicy and round. The orange fills the middle with barely any acidity, and the vodka stays below the surface the whole way through.

    Finish

Short and sweet with a last brush of citrus before the sugar lets go.

In 1995 a man stood in a kitchen in Kolding, burning out one blender after another while chasing a vodka with flavour. Cuba Pure Vodka is the bottle where he kept his hands off the flavour. Clean, cool and ready to be mixed with whatever you have on the shelf.

    Expert description

Cuba Pure Vodka is a Danish Vodka Spirit Drink from Spritfabrikken Danmark in Kolding, built on triple distilled vodka and bottled at 37.5%.

The range behind the bottle is the largest Danish selection of flavoured vodka, and it started in a private kitchen. Pure is the odd one out. No fruit, no colour, no sweetness. What you get is the base that every colourful sibling is built on top of.

The vodka is distilled three times and filtered, and you can taste it on the edges. Very little bite is left, and that is the point. The producer suggests everything from juice and soda to energy drink as a mixer, and the bottle holds its ground in a Moscow Mule without being flattened by the ginger.

The rest of the range sits at 30% and is sold as spirit drinks made with vodka. Pure sits higher, which makes it the driest and most neutral member of the family. If you want it neat, give it time in the freezer first.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Very discreet. A trace of sweet grain and a hint of citrus peel, otherwise clean and cool with no sharp spirit fumes.

    Palate

Soft and gently sweet through the middle. No peppery bite, just a rounded grain note and a faint touch of vanilla before it moves on.

    Finish

Short and clean. The warmth drops away quickly and leaves no bitterness behind on the palate.

There is a particular red you only meet in late summer and in this bottle. Cuba Strawberry is strawberry without a season, poured into a tall glass with plenty of ice and something fizzy to follow.

    Expert description

Cuba Strawberry is a Danish Vodka Spirit Drink from Spritfabrikken Danmark in Kolding, flavoured with ripe strawberries and bottled at 30%.

The bottle belongs to the colourful half of the range, where flavour leads and alcohol stays in the background. That is exactly why the label reads spirit drink made with vodka rather than vodka: 30% falls below the strength that the category demands.

The strawberry is sweet and ripe rather than tart, and the colour does part of the work in the glass. The producer recommends it chilled, ideally shaken with ice or lengthened with soda and juice. It turns up in the house Strawberry Mojito, where lime and mint pull the sweetness back into place.

Served lukewarm the berry quickly turns sticky. Cold and over plenty of ice it is one of the easiest bottles to build a pink drink on, and it handles both citrus and carbonation without splitting.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe strawberries straight away, close to boiled sweets. Behind them sits a faintly creamy tone and a soft breath of sugar.

    Palate

Sweet and full with the berry in front all the way. The vodka lies underneath as a soft floor and gives structure without letting the alcohol poke through.

    Finish

Short and sugary. The berry hangs around for a moment, and then the glass is empty of flavour again.

Behind this rum-based drink lies a sustainability project from William Grant & Sons, where discarded banana peels from the food industry get a new life.

    Expert Description

Discarded Banana Peel is a Caribbean Rum-based Spirit Drink, a whisky-cask-matured Caribbean rum infused with banana peels for two weeks, bottled at 37.5%.

The Discarded Spirits range from William Grant & Sons is built around sustainability: the banana peels used to flavour the rum come from a flavour house that only uses the fruit's flesh and would otherwise have thrown the peels away. Because the rum is infused with banana peel and other natural flavourings, it's sold as a spirit drink rather than rum.

The result is a sweet, dessert-like drink with a pronounced banana character, made primarily for cocktails and desserts rather than serious rum sipping.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Banana bread and caramelised toffee, with dried fruit and baking spice.

Where the XO edition shows the breadth of Caribbean rum traditions, this spiced little sibling takes a more playful route with vanilla, cinnamon and cardamom.

    Expert Description

Hell or High Water Spiced is a spiced Caribbean Rum, a blend of selected rums assembled by One Eyed Spirits and flavoured with vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, anise and coriander, bottled at 38%.

The brand, originally called Ron de Jeremy before its 2020 rebrand, uses this Small Batch edition to create a more approachable and playful take on rum than the house's ambitious XO blend. The base rum comes from several Caribbean distilleries and is then spiced with a handful of warm, sweet spices, a style that draws on the long tradition of flavoured rum in the Caribbean.

Because the rum is bottled at 38%, below the 40% the EU normally requires to call a product rum, it's technically classified as a spirit drink, though in style and character it belongs among the spiced rums.

    Tasting Notes

  • Kraken Spiced Black Trinidad Rum 40%
    Item no.: 22227865407-8

The sugar cane grows right down to the coast in Trinidad, and the molasses from it ends up in tall distillation columns. The rum that comes out is young and raw. Then come the spices. And then comes the bottle with two handles on the neck and a sea monster dragging a sailing ship into the deep.

    Expert description

Kraken Spiced Black Trinidad Rum is a Spiced Rum from Trinidad, made from molasses rum aged 1-2 years and bottled at 40%.

The base rum comes from Angostura Distillery in Trinidad, where it is column-distilled from cane molasses. After a couple of years in cask it is blended with a spice recipe that Proximo Spirits keeps close to its chest. Cinnamon, ginger and cloves are the only ones officially confirmed. Caramel gives it its final, almost jet-black colour, which is also why it cannot claim to be naturally coloured.

Kraken hit the market in 2010 and quickly became the bottle people pointed at behind the bar before they had even tasted it. The name comes from the Norse legend of the sea monster, and the bottle shape is copied from old Victorian rum bottles with two handles on the neck, so they could be lashed down on board a ship in rough weather.

It is a rum built to be mixed. The sweetness and spices stand up strongly enough to be felt through ginger beer, cola and coffee without disappearing.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and caramel first, heavy and sweet. Then cinnamon, a touch of lime and something reminiscent of coffee grounds and liquorice.

    Palate

Thick and syrupy. Molasses, brown sugar, cloves and nutmeg, with a dark roasted note in the background like espresso and toasted oak.

    Expert description

Legendario Elixir de Cuba 7 Year is a Spirit Drink based on Cuban rum matured up to 7 years, blended with raisin extract and bottled at 34%.

The elixir is made by Legendario, a Cuban house founded in 1946, by blending cask-matured rum with an extract of grapes and raisins. Because Cuban law only permits up to 20 grams of added sugar per litre for a spirit to be called rum, this drink correctly falls into the Spirit Drink category instead, with a thicker, more dessert-like style than classic rum. The result is a sweet, easy-drinking bottle that is simple to enjoy both neat and in simple mixes.

    Item no.: 22227865378-10197

From the French house of Bardinet comes this spiced Caribbean rum, where citrus and warm spices take turns leading in the glass.

    Expert Description

Negrita Spiced Caribbean Rum is a Spiced Caribbean Rum produced by Bardinet, bottled at 35%.

The rum is built on Negrita's classic Caribbean base, which is then spiced with a blend of warm spices. The nose opens gently with citrus fruit, particularly yellow lemon, before the spices unfold with aeration in the glass. The palate is marked by vanilla and a fatty, soft texture, where tanginess and spice keep each other in check.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Yellow lemon and a mild spiciness at first, which with air opens up to nutmeg, cardamom, clove and pepper over molasses and toasted sugar.

    Palate

Soft, fatty vanilla meets tanginess and spice in a balanced palate with toasted spices, caramel and a hint of citrus.

    Finish

Light and relatively short, where vanilla's sweetness dominates.
