The whiskey is distilled by Powerscourt Distillery, one of Ireland's newest distilleries, established in 2017 with the first distillations in 2018. The distillery is located on Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow, owned by the Slazenger family, and sells its Single Malt, Single Grain and Blended releases under the Fercullen brand. This 10-year-old single grain spends its first years in American white oak before finishing in completely fresh bourbon casks, giving a combination of classic grain sweetness and fresher cask spice.

The barley is spread across a stone floor, turned by shovel over several days and dried above the kiln. That is the slow way to malt, and it survives at only a handful of Scottish distilleries. Here the entire bottle is made from it.

BenRiach Malting Season Second Edition 2013/2022 is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill bourbon casks and bottled at 48.9 %.

Malting Season is the distillery range made purely from barley malted on the house floor maltings. BenRiach is one of very few Scottish distilleries to have kept the facility, and it is only used in limited periods each year, which sets a natural ceiling on how much whisky the range can yield.

The second edition was distilled in 2013 and bottled in 2022 after nine years in first fill bourbon wood. The fresh American oak gives vanilla and pale sugar, and because the malt was floor malted the cereal character stands out more clearly than in the other bottlings from the distillery.

Champagne casks barely exist. The houses in Champagne use their own casks again and again and rarely sell them on. Getting hold of 195 litre casks from Paul Launois in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is therefore an unusual thing to be able to write on a whisky label.

Ardnamurchan Champagne Cask Paul Launois AD 06:22 is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in 195 litre champagne casks from Paul Launois and bottled at 57.5% cask strength. The outturn was 2,661 bottles.

Paul Launois is based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs, one of the villages in Champagne classified as grand cru. The area is known for chardonnay, and casks from there carry a far lighter and more mineral character than the sherry and port casks whisky is usually finished in.

A cask of 195 litres is small enough to work quickly, and at 57.5% the concentration is high. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Green apple and lemon peel first, with a light bready note as from champagne’s time on the lees. Beneath sit Ardnamurchan’s own peat smoke and a maritime salinity, plus vanilla from the bourbon maturation before the finish.

Palate

Fresh and taut to begin, which is unusual at this strength. Apple, citrus and a chalky minerality open, then the smoke arrives and brings weight. A fine acidity runs the whole way and keeps the whisky light on its feet despite the 57.5%.

Finish

Long and dry. Citrus, mineral and smoke, with a final malt sweetness lingering.

The Expert's Description

Ardnamurchan AD/ is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky composed of 65% ex-bourbon casks and 35% sherry casks and bottled at 46.8%. It is the first release without a batch number, marking the shift from numbered one-off releases to a permanent core expression.

The malt is split evenly between peated and unpeated. That is the distillery’s founding move: rather than keeping the two styles apart they bring them together, so the smoke becomes a floor rather than the main event. The split between bourbon and sherry gives vanilla, bright fruit and darker sherry fruit alike.

The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured, the carton is 100% recycled board, and every bottle carries a QR code giving access to blockchain-registered production data.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Fresh malt and bright fruit first, pear and apple from the bourbon casks. Then raisins and orange peel from the sherry portion, and beneath it all a dry peat smoke, clear without dominating.

Palate

Soft and well balanced. Vanilla, honey and baked fruit open, then the sherry’s darker fruit and a lightly spiced warmth arrive. The smoke gathers it up towards the close. At 46.8% the body is good without weight.

Finish

Medium length. Malt, dark fruit and a dry smoky edge that lets go cleanly.

The KORNMOD barley variety is not used in commercial large-scale production. It requires hand malting and works best in small-batch distillation where its characteristics are not drowned out by industrial processes.

Rye casks are not something you run into in Speyside. Bourbon yes, sherry yes, port maybe — but casks that have held American rye whiskey remain a rarity. Glen Moray brought some over from Kentucky and let spirit from 2016 finish in them.

Glen Moray Elgin Curiosity Rye Cask Finish is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in Kentucky rye whiskey casks and bottled at 46.3%.

The spirit dates from 2016 and had its final maturation in casks that previously held American rye whiskey. Rye behaves differently from corn: where bourbon casks lay vanilla and coconut into the whisky, rye casks bring pepper, cinnamon and a drier spice note. The outturn is 1,637 bottles, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

Curiosity is the range where Glen Moray tests limits rather than repeats itself. The distillery has run cask trials as a standing part of the work for years, and the Curiosity releases have included casks from Chenin Blanc wine and rhum agricole. The rye casks here belong to the more successful end of those experiments.

Tasting notes

Nose

Soft vanilla met by fresh lemon peel and a clear peppery note. The rye registers immediately — there is something sharp and dry sitting on top of the soft Speyside base.

Palate

Caramel and oak first, then forest fruit and a peppery middle. The rye character gives the whisky an edge it would not otherwise have had, and the citrus note keeps things fresh.

Finish

Medium and spiced. Pepper and cinnamon drying out slowly, with a final hint of caramel.

Knob Creek 9 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's core expression, aged 9 years, bottled at 50%. Knob Creek was created in 1992 by Booker Noe, grandson of Jim Beam, as part of the Jim Beam Small Batch Bourbon Collection. Noe drew inspiration from the Bottled-in-Bond Act to create a whiskey representing the full flavour and quality of the pre-Prohibition era. The brand name was actually used as early as 1898, but was revived by the Beam family after acquiring National Distillers in 1987. Knob Creek helped revive interest in full-proof bourbon at a time when many other brands were lowering their alcohol content.

A single refill cask, one day in January 2011, and eleven years later a couple of hundred bottles – that's how Lady of the Glen's edition of Loch Lomond came to be. Cask strength and an unusually light, sweet character make it something of its own.

Loch Lomond 2011/2022 Lady of the Glen 11 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a refill cask and bottled at 55.3%.

The whisky was distilled on 11 January 2011 and rested in a single refill cask until being bottled on 30 March 2022 by independent bottler Lady of the Glen (Hannah Whisky Merchants). Only 217 bottles were filled from this one cask, and the whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Light and airy with vanilla and a clear sweetness, underpinned by a touch of malt.

Palate

Surprisingly light-bodied despite the high strength, with layers of vanilla and a lingering sweetness carried by the cask strength.

Bunnahabhain 2011/2022 Lady of the Glen 10 Years Old is a Single Islay Malt Scotch Whisky from a single cask, bottled at cask strength, 57.7%.

The whisky was distilled in December 2011 and bottled in April 2022 from cask #878, an ordinary barrel that has given a modest yield of just 250 bottles. Lady of the Glen always bottles at cask strength, without chill filtration and without added colour.

In the glass it offers smoky tea, honeydew melon and crisp biscuits – a combination worth cutting with a touch of water to draw out the full picture.
