Denmark is not the first country that comes to mind when the talk turns to peated single malt. But Isle of Fionia Peated is here to change that – medium-peated organic malt, Bourbon casks from Tennessee and a touch of white oak. Something entirely its own.

    Expert description

Isle of Fionia Peated is an organic Peated Danish Single Malt Whisky bottled at 48%. Distilled at Isle of Fionia / Nyborg Distillery in the historic DSB train depot in Nyborg, Funen, the whisky is made from medium-peated organic malt that gives a noticeable but not overwhelming smoke character. Cask-wise, it has primarily rested in Jack Daniels Bourbon casks with a partial finish in STR white oak casks – Shaved, Toasted and Re-charred. A young, characterful whisky with smoke up front and Bourbon sweetness as its counterpart. EAN: 5712631000216.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Clear and inviting with light medicinal smoke – less Islay, more coastal Danish. Behind it: vanilla and caramel from the Jack Daniels casks and a fresh nose of organic malt.

    Palate

Young smoke upfront with good body for its age. The Bourbon cask sweetness pushes through – vanilla caramel and dark wood – while the smoke holds its ground. The STR casks give a woody, spiced finish.

    Finish

Medium to long with a lingering smoke note and warm oak bitterness at the base.

    Did you know?

Unlike many Scottish peated whiskies that use peat from specific Scottish bogs, Isle of Fionia peats their malt with Danish or European peat. This gives a slightly different smoke character – more earthy and less medicinal than a classic Islay.

Frequently asked questions about Isle of Fionia Peated

What is Isle of Fionia Peated?

Isle of Fionia Peated is an organic peated Danish Single Malt Whisky at 48%, made from medium-peated organic barley and matured in Jack Daniels Bourbon casks with a partial STR cask finish. Produced at Nyborg Distillery in Nyborg, Funen.

    Is it very smoky?

No – medium peated means the smoke character is noticeable but not dominant. It is distinctly different from a heavily peated Islay like Ardbeg or Laphroaig. The smoke here is more earthy and coastal than densely medicinal.

What does Isle of Fionia Peated taste like?

Smoke and Bourbon sweetness in good balance. The nose is lightly medicinal with vanilla and caramel from the Jack Daniels casks. Young, direct smoke on the palate with good body for the age, and the STR casks add a woody, spiced finish.

    What are STR casks?

STR stands for Shaved, Toasted and Re-charred – used casks with the oldest wood layer removed before being re-toasted and re-charred. They deliver a different sweetness and spice compared to fresh first fill casks.

Does Isle of Fionia Peated suit someone who likes Islay whisky?

Partially – but they are not the same. Islay whiskies like Ardbeg and Laphroaig are more heavily peated and medicinal. Isle of Fionia Peated is more approachable and can be a good starting point for the curious without the full Islay intensity.

    What is Nyborg Distillery?

Nyborg Distillery is the producer behind Isle of Fionia, located in the historic DSB train depot in Nyborg, Funen. They won Distillery of the Year 2025.
