Guyana Rum

Guyana Rum

  • Slim bottle with dark label and gold lettering, Alta Gama Demi-sec
    Item no.: 22227865395-8178

Demi-Sec is the sweetest and final stop in the Alta Gama series, which otherwise consists of the exact same rum from bottle to bottle.

    Expert description

Alta Gama Demi-Sec is a Guyana Spirit Drink matured in oak casks and bottled at 41%.

The rum is a blend from three historic distilleries in Guyana: Port Mourant with its double wooden pot still, Enmore with its wooden coffey still, and Uitvlugt with its four-column French Savalle still, matured between 5 and 15 years in ex-bourbon casks of American oak. The Demi-Sec expression carries 35 grams of added sugar per litre, the highest sweetness in the series and well above the EU's 20 gram per litre limit for products labelled as rum, meaning the product must legally be described as Spirit Drink rather than Rum. The rum is distributed in Denmark by CRT Spirits.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Burnt Demerara sugar and liquorice in a noticeably sweeter, more syrupy expression than the rest of the series, with orange peel and a touch of oak.

    Palate

Full-bodied and markedly sweet with burnt sugar, caramel and a soft, round body.

    Finish

Long, sweet and gentle, where the burnt sugar and discreet spice linger longest of the whole series.

With 35 grams of sugar per litre, Demi-Sec is the sweetest of the four Alta Gama expressions, and the difference of just 20 grams of sugar between Brut Nature and Demi-Sec is enough to shift the product from the Rum category to the Spirit Drink category under EU law.

    Item no.: 22227865395-8176

Three distilleries, three still styles, one bottle – Alta Gama Extra-sec is a small lesson in just how differently Guyana can taste.

    Expert description

Alta Gama Extra-sec is a Guyana Rum matured in oak casks and bottled at 41%.

The rum is a blend from three historic distilleries in Guyana: Port Mourant with its double wooden pot still, Enmore with its wooden coffey still, and Uitvlugt with its four-column French Savalle still. The blend gives Alta Gama Extra-sec a character spanning from the heavy, molasses-driven Port Mourant style to the lighter, more elegant Uitvlugt style. The rum is distributed in Denmark by CRT Spirits.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Burnt Demerara sugar, liquorice and orange peel with a hint of oak.

  • Four-bottle gift box with four small bottles from the Alta Gama series
    Item no.: 22227865395-8508

Four bottles, one rum blend, four different sweetness levels – this gift set is the easiest way to understand just how much sugar actually shapes a rum's character.

    Expert description

Alta Gama Gift Set is a tasting set of four 10 cl bottles from the same Guyana rum blend, all bottled at 41%.

The set contains Brut Nature with no added sugar, Extra-Sec with 15 grams of added sugar per litre, Sec with 25 grams and Demi-Sec with 35 grams. The two sweetest expressions, Sec and Demi-Sec, exceed the EU's 20 gram per litre limit for products labelled as rum and are therefore legally described as Spirit Drink, while Brut Nature and Extra-Sec remain Rum. All four are based on the same blend from the Port Mourant, Enmore and Uitvlugt stills at Demerara Distillers, matured between 5 and 15 years in ex-bourbon casks of American oak, differing only in the amount of added sugar.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

All four share a base of burnt Demerara sugar, liquorice and orange peel, but the sweetness and syrupy character increase markedly from Brut Nature to Demi-Sec.

    Palate

The progression runs from dry and sharp in Brut Nature to full-bodied and markedly sweet in Demi-Sec, with Extra-Sec and Sec as steps in between.

    Finish

Similar oak and spice notes across all four, but the length and sweetness of the finish increase noticeably through the set.

  • Miniature bottle British Royal Navy Imperial Rum with certificate
    Item no.: 059763-615-9

A numbered certificate accompanies this small bottle - proof that the contents come from one of the original gallon bottles the British Navy used for sailors' daily rum ration.

    Expert description

British Royal Navy Miniature with Certificate is a dark Imperial Rum of unknown distillery, bottled at 54% in a small 5 cl collector's bottle with an accompanying certificate of authenticity.

The rum comes from one of the original "One Imperial Gallon" bottles carried aboard British Navy ships for distributing the daily "tot of rum". When the tradition was abolished in 1970, remaining stocks were recalled, and some of the rare gallon bottles only resurfaced many years later. To make the contents available to collectors, part of the rum has been bottled into small 5 cl bottles, each with a numbered certificate documenting its origin.

Only 70 of these miniature bottles with certificate have been produced, making each one a tangible piece of British Naval rum history - an era when navy strength sat well above ordinary rum, and where the very term "over proof" arose as a test of whether the rum could ignite gunpowder.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark, molasses-heavy and with a distinct hint of age.

    Palate

Powerful and raw, in the classic navy style at high strength.

    Finish

    Long, warm and lingering.

    Specifications

    Flavour profile

    Investment potential

High - only 70 numbered miniature bottles with certificate exist, offering access to an authentic navy rum that is otherwise almost impossible to find available.

    Did you know?

The term "proof" in spirits comes from the Navy's practice of testing rum strength by pouring it over gunpowder and trying to ignite it - if the gunpowder could still burn, the rum was "above proof".

The blend is assembled by the French independent bottler Compagnie des Indes, without additives, bringing together rum from four very different Caribbean traditions in a single bottle. • Diamond Distillery 2003/2015 Bristol Classic Guyana Rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865443-1511

Guyana's Demerara River has for centuries delivered rum with a heavy, earthy character. Bristol Spirits captured a single distillate from the Diamond distillery in 2003 and let it mature for the best part of a decade before bottling it without embellishment.

    Expert Description

Diamond Distillery 2003/2015 Bristol Classic is a Guyana Rum distilled on column stills and bottled at 43%.

The rum was distilled in 2003 at the Diamond distillery, owned by Demerara Distillers Limited on the east bank of the Demerara River, and cask aged until 2015, when it was bottled by the independent English bottler Bristol Spirits under the Bristol Classic Rum label. The rum is molasses-based and column distilled, a style that offers a cleaner, more traditional expression than the heavy pot still rums Guyana is also known for.

The twelve years of ageing, partly in Guyana and partly after transport to England, has given the rum a balanced character, where fruit and wood meet without either dominating.

    Tasting Notes

The rum is distilled by Demerara Distillers at the Diamond plant and represents the entry point to the house's age range. Although it is the youngest of the named El Dorado releases, it already carries the characteristic Demerara sweetness and richness that made the brand famous, making it a versatile rum that works just as well in a cocktail as sipped neat.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Lively with dried tropical fruit, caramel, butterscotch and molasses, led by caramel and vanilla, followed by banana and pineapple with a hint of cinnamon.

    Palate

A vibrant, spicy entry evolving through fruit, caramel and toasted coconut, fading to a vanilla-tinted glow, with burnt sugar and dried fruit like raisins and prunes plus a touch of dark chocolate.

    Finish

Short and dry, with a lingering toasted oak note and a subtle hint of liquorice and molasses.

    Expert description

El Dorado 8 Year Cask Aged is a Guyana Rum matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from Demerara Distillers in Guyana, which distils on a collection of historic stills, including the Port Mourant pot still and the Enmore wooden coffey still. After distillation, the rum is matured for at least 8 years in casks that previously held bourbon, giving it a full-bodied, well-developed character that has made the release one of the best-selling age-stated rums from Guyana.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Balanced between fruit and confection with tobacco, cloves and dried cherry, underpinned by caramel toffee plus a hint of dried stone fruit and flambéed banana.

    Palate

Soft and silky with toffee, ginger and stewed red fruit, plus honeyed fruit cake, vanilla, caramel and a touch of orange marmalade.

    Expert description

El Dorado Port Morant 1999 is a Single Still Demerara Rum from Guyana, distilled on the Diamond distillery's famous Port Mourant wooden double pot still in 1999, matured for 16 years in former bourbon casks and bottled at 61.4% with no added sweetening.

The Port Mourant still is the world's last surviving wooden double pot still of its type and produces a markedly heavier, smokier, more earthy rum than most other Demerara still styles. Being part of El Dorado's Rare Collection, the release is neither filtered nor sweetened, letting the still's raw, historic character come through undisturbed.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Smoky and earthy with intense spiced tones, a greedy fruitiness evoking cooked apple, vanilla and cinnamon, extended by liquorice, almond and walnuts, highlighted with candied orange, tar, aniseed, black pepper, cloves and nutmeg.

    Palate

Woody notes explode on the tongue, transitioning into spiced aniseed and tar followed by a buttery, oily, nutty caramel, surprisingly citrus-forward with sweetness and dryness on the first sip.

    Finish

Vibrant woody aromas, sweet spices and dried fruit blend harmoniously into a refined, delicate finish with a hint of citrus.

El Dorado Versailles 2002 is a Single Still Demerara Rum from Guyana, distilled on the historic Versailles pot still in 2002 and bottled at 63% as part of El Dorado's Rare Collection.

The Versailles still is one of the last surviving single-distillation stills of its type in the world and produces a markedly heavier, more robust rum style than the blended releases in El Dorado's core range. Because the release is unfiltered and has no added sugar, it comes across as raw and intense, its 63% strength underlining the still's characteristic power.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light brown sugar with a touch of sourness, complemented by caramel, tobacco, tropical fruit and cinnamon.

    Expert Description

Guyana Diamond 14 Year Blackadder Raw Cask is a Guyana Rum from the Diamond distillery, bottled unfiltered at cask strength of 63%.

The rum is bottled by the Scottish independent bottler Blackadder, known in the whisky world for its Raw Cask series, where the spirit is filled straight from the barrel without chill-filtering or reduction with water. The base distillate comes from the Diamond distillery in Guyana, famous for its many different still types, including the historic wooden stills still in use there.

  • Pusser's Gunpowder Proof British Navy Rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865449-280

Before modern hydrometers existed, the British Navy tested rum strength by pouring it over gunpowder and lighting it. If the powder still ignited with a steady blue flame, the strength was correct. Gunpowder Proof is Pusser's tribute to that exact strength.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Gunpowder Proof is a Rum from Barbados and the British Virgin Islands, bottled at the original admiralty strength of 54.5%.

The rum is built on the same historic recipe as the house's standard British Navy expression, but is bottled at the precise "gunpowder proof" strength the navy used for its gunpowder test, back when alcohol meters didn't yet exist. The blend follows the admiralty's original recipe, as used until the Royal Navy officially discontinued the daily rum tot on 31 July 1970.

The higher strength gives a more concentrated flavour experience than the standard expression, with a deeper, more warming character that underscores the rum's roots as a spirit built to hold up on a ship for months at a time.

    Tasting Notes

Pungent molasses, treacle, caramel, honey and vanilla, complemented by oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

Gunpowder and rum share a long, common history in the British Navy - this release is even named "Gunpowder Proof" after the old method of testing a rum's strength by igniting gunpowder soaked in it.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Gunpowder Proof Spiced British Navy Rum is a spiced Rum from Guyana, bottled at a full 54.5%.

Pusser's is built on the original recipe used by the Royal Navy for its daily rum rations until 1970, when the tradition was stopped. This release is spiced with selected spices on top of the powerful Guyanese rum base and bottled at "gunpowder proof" - the old strength at which the rum could ignite gunpowder if spilled on it, a simple but effective way to test alcohol content before hydrometers became common on board.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972707

151 is the number that gives the bottle its name, a reference to the old British navy's overproof standard, back when rum was still part of sailors' daily ration.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Select Aged 151 is a Guyana Rum, a blend from Pusser's Rum, aged a minimum of 3 years in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at cask strength, 75.5%.

The rum is based on distillate from Guyanese molasses, including from the famous Port Mourant wooden double pot still, one of the last of its kind still in operation. Select Aged 151 closely follows the Admiralty's historic regulations for the official navy rum ration, which was issued to British sailors up until 1970, when the tradition was finally abolished. Pusser's Rum later took over the rights to continue the recipe and the name.

The style is intense and powerful, with a deep, dark sweetness carrying the entire historic overproof heritage forward.

  • Bottle of Rammstein Limited Edition Cognac Cask Finish rum
    Item no.: 059763-615-244

The Rammstein name is known from the stage, but behind the bottle lies a very different craft - a Caribbean blend, finished off in ex-cognac casks.

    Expert Description

Rammstein Limited Edition Cognac Cask Finish is a Rum from Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad, up to 12 years old with a finishing period on ex-cognac casks for 12 months, bottled at 46%.

The rum is a blend of distillates from three of the Caribbean's most respected rum-producing countries. The base is aged up to 12 years, after which it is moved onto ex-cognac casks for a further 12 months. The cognac casks give the rum a softer, more grape-sweet character on top of the powerful, molasses-heavy base, particularly from Jamaica and Guyana. The release is limited to 5,800 bottles.

The name is a nod to the German rock band, but the contents are pure Caribbean rum craftsmanship with no further connection to the music.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Molasses, dried fruit and a touch of grape sweetness from the cognac casks.

    Palate

Powerful and full-bodied with caramel, spice and dark fruit.

    Finish

    Long, warm and slightly sweet.

  • Dark rum bottle with animal-print label, RomDeLuxe Wild Series
    Item no.: 059763-615-876

The Diamond distillery in Guyana holds more still styles than most other distilleries in the world combined. This bottle comes from one of them – the Savalle column, historically linked to the heavy Port Mourant profile.

    Expert Description

RomDeLuxe Wild Series Rum #51 is a Guyanese Single Cask Rum distilled on the Diamond distillery's Savalle column and bottled at cask strength 57.5%.

The bottle comes from RomDeLuxe, the Danish independent bottler founded by Claus Andersen, Kim Pedersen and Michael Ginnerup, known for tracking down and bottling rum from forgotten and single casks around the world. Wild Series is the company's most rustic line, with labels decorated by wild animals, letting the rum speak entirely for itself – no added sugar, no added colour.

Marque MPM refers to a profile historically tied to the Port Mourant distillery, even though the rum today is distilled at Diamond. It matured for 13 years before being drawn from a single cask and bottled without filtration. This release ships without its box.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark molasses, black pepper and a touch of charred wood meet dried fruit and a hint of tar – classic for the heavier Guyanese style.

    Palate

Powerful and oily with liquorice, dark chocolate and spiced oak, all lifted by the cask strength without turning sharp.

    Finish

Long and warm with smoky caramel notes and a dry, woody finish that lingers.

    Investment Potential

Low to medium. RomDeLuxe's single cask releases typically sell out, and once the bottle is empty, it never returns – but the point here is the drinking pleasure, not shelf storage.

    Did You Know?

The Diamond distillery has inherited stills from several closed Guyanese distilleries, including Port Mourant, Enmore and Versailles – so even though a bottle today comes from Diamond, it can still carry the name and profile of a distillery that closed decades ago.

  • RomDeLuxe Wild Series Uitvlugt 30 Year Guyana single cask rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865471111-882

From the Port Mourant still in Guyana to a Danish wine merchant's name on the label. Wild Series #19 is RomDeLuxe's tribute to a cask that travelled between two climates and three decades before finally being bottled.

    Expert Description

RomDeLuxe Wild Series Rum #19 Uitvlugt Uhrskov Vine is a Guyana Rum from a single cask, distilled in 1990 on the famous Port Mourant pot still, aged 30 years and bottled at 55.2%.

The rum comes from the Uitvlugt distillery in Guyana, where it was distilled on the historic Port Mourant double wooden pot still, one of the most iconic and oldest still-operating distillation units in the world. After distillation, the rum first aged five years in Guyana's tropical climate before being moved to Denmark and continuing to age continentally for the rest of the 30 years. This transition from tropical to continental ageing gives the rum a different character than if it had remained in the tropics the whole way. The series was created specifically for the Danish wine merchant Uhrskov Vinhandel, and only 231 bottles were produced.

RomDeLuxe, the Danish bottling house behind the series, is known for selecting rare, characterful single casks from around the world and bottling them without additives.

    Palate

Light fruit and wonderful wood with smoky nuances, complex and well balanced with warmth on the palate.

Long and warm, with a lingering spiced sweetness.
